  • Publication number: 20050153687
Abstract: In a method in association with a communication system a request for a connection is signaled between a user equipment and another party. The requested connection is then analyzed. Subsequent to detection that location information is required in association with the requested connection, a process for determining information about the location of the user equipment is activated. First information in association with the determining process is communicated on a control plane between the user equipment and the communication system, while second information in association with the determining process is communicated on a user plane between the user equipment and the communication system. An arrangement in association with location services and a user equipment capable of providing location information is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050046613
Abstract: A method of providing information regarding the location of a mobile user equipment (1) in a system wherein the location is determined based on information signalled from entities (10) of a positioning system and assistance data signalled from a station (5) of a communication system. In the method the likely location of the mobile user equipment relative to the station is first determined. Based on the determined likely location, an estimate of the delay in transmitting a signal from the station to the mobile user equipment is estimated. Assistance data is then signalled from the station to the mobile user equipment, said assistance data comprising information about the timing of the positioning system. A more accurate location determination is accomplished at the user equipment based on signals from the entities of the positioning system, the assistance data and said estimated delay.

  • Publication number: 20040102196
Abstract: The present invention relates to a location method and system for locating a wireless terminal device (10) in a cellular network. At least two spatially diverse local measurement units (41-43) are arranged at a local determination unit (20) and adapted to receive a signal from the wireless terminal device (10). Measurement signals received from the at least two local measurement units (41-43) are processed at said local determination unit (20) to obtain a location information of said wireless terminal device (10) to be transmitted to a location center of said cellular network. The location information may be a time difference of arrival value or a location estimate. Thereby, a high accurate location can be provided in specific areas, such as indoor environments. Furthermore, network signaling load is reduced and clock synchronization between location measurement units is no longer required, due to the fact that the location information is directly generated at the local location measurement units.

  • Publication number: 20040082344
Abstract: A method for identification of transceiver devices is disclosed constituting a radio communication network, said method comprising the steps of pre-identifying said transceiver devices, judging that there is an ambiguous result obtained in said pre-identification, and verifying said ambiguous result by identifying said transceiver devices based on real time difference RTD values between said transceiver devices. Also, a method for checking measurement values of an observed time difference OTD obtained at a mobile transceiver device operated within a radio communication network constituted by transceiver devices is disclosed, wherein said checking is based on real time difference RTD values between said transceiver devices. Thus, an improved method is obtained for mobile station location determination and/or for taking handover decisions as well as a way of verifying the reliability of obtained measurement results.

  • Publication number: 20040067759
Abstract: The invention proposes a method for locating a network element, comprising the steps of obtaining (S1) the coordinates (xS, yS) of a second network element (BTS) to which the first network element (MS) is connected or attached; detecting (S2) a serving area (S), which is served by the second network element (BTS); detecting (S3) a propagation delay of the first network element with respect to the second network element (BTS); determining (S4) a propagation delay depending area (C), which is an area having a distance to the second network element (BTS) based on the propagation delay and a width based on the propagation delay; and forming (S5) an intersection area (I) of the serving area (S) and the propagation delay depending area (C); wherein a location estimate of the first network element (MS) is determined (S6) from the intersection area (I). Thus, an uncertainty area where a first network element is located can be reduced and the location accuracy can be improved.

  • Patent number: 6667963
Abstract: A cellular radio network based positioning system for determining the position of a mobile station (16). For each base transceiver station (1 to 5) or cell of the network, a fixed list of base transceiver stations is stored by a Mobile Positioning Centre (13). Each list identifies those base transceiver stations which enable the position of a mobile station served by the corresponding base transceiver station (6) to be optimally determined. The list is transmitted to the mobile station (16) via the serving base transceiver station (6) together with a list of respective real time differences which exist between the serving base transceiver stations and the listed base transceiver stations. The mobile station determines an observed time difference for each of the listed base transceiver stations, relative to the serving base transceiver station (6), from signals broadcast by the listed base transceiver stations.

  • Publication number: 20030162505
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining transmission times of signals transmitted by at least one radio transmitter BTS. In order to enhance the accuracy and reliability of estimates of transmission times or of changes of the transmission time of signals transmitted by radio transmitters BTS, it is proposed that a difference in the time level of estimates of the transmission times based on the measurement results of two different radio receivers LMU A,B is taken into account in a filtering of the estimates for obtaining an accurate value for the transmission times. It is further proposed that the changes of the transmission times estimated at different receivers LMU A,B is averaged for obtaining an accurate information about the changes. The invention equally relates to a corresponding radio communications system and to a processing unit for such a system.

  • Publication number: 20030157939
Abstract: The present invention relates to selection of sites of a communication system for measurement units that are for measuring a feature of wireless signals so that the location of a wireless station may be determined based on the measurement. Each measurement unit provides a measurement coverage. In the method a first set of information is defined, said first set relating to sites that are possible locations for the location measurement units and to the coverage provided by the site if it is provided with a measurement unit. A second set of information is defined that relates to signalling environment within the sites. Based on the defined first and second sets of information, a third set of information is defined, said third set associating each site with access entities of the communication system. Based on the third set of information, appropriate sites can be selected for the location measurement units.

  • Patent number: 6484031
Abstract: The invention relates to a locating method and an arrangement for determining the location of a terminal in a radio system comprising a plurality of base stations and terminals. At least two base stations with known locations transmit a signal used in locating the terminal, and the signals are transmitted in beams with directional antenna patterns and the direction of the beams is changed as a function of time. The terminal determines the location of the base station and the transmission direction of the signal used in location determination by means of the beam transmitted by said at least two base stations. Since the terminal is located at the intersection of the beams of the base stations transmitting from known locations, the location of the terminal can easily be determined. The solution takes multipath propagation into account.
