Patent number: 6609579Abstract: A drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores includes a drill bit and a drilling motor that provides rotary power to the drill bit. A steering device integrated into drilling motor assembly contains a plurality of force application members. In one embodiment, each force application member is adapted to exert an adjustable amount of force on the wellbore interior. A separate or common power unit at or uphole of the drilling motor provides power to the force application members. A control device and control circuit can cooperate to independently operate each of the force application members. An inductive transmission device can be used to transmit electrical signals and/or power between rotating and non-rotating section of the drilling motor. During drilling of a wellbore, the force application members are operated to adjust the force on the wellbore to drill the wellbore in the desired direction.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2002Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Volker Krueger, Thomas Kruspe, Carsten Freyer, Hans Jurgen Faber

Publication number: 20030146022Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling assembly that includes a mud motor that rotates a drill bit and a set of independently expandable ribs. A stabilizer uphole of the ribs provides stability. A second set of ribs may be disposed on the drilling assembly. Vertical and curved holes are drilled by rotating the drill bit by the mud motor and by independently adjusting the rib forces. The drill string is not rotated. Inclined straight sections and curved sections may be drilled by independent adjustment of the rib forces and by rotating the drill bit with the motor, without rotating the drill string. Inclined sections or curved sections in the vertical plane are drilled by superimposing the drillstring rotation on the mud motor rotation and by setting the rib forces to the same predetermined values. Rib forces are adjusted if the drilling direction differs from the defined inclination. The system is self-adjusting and operates in a closed loop manner.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2002Publication date: August 7, 2003Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Volker Krueger

Publication number: 20030098181Abstract: A wellbore drilling system has an umbilical that carries a drill bit in a wellbore. Drilling fluid pumped into the umbilical discharges at the drill bit bottom and returns through an annulus between the umbilical and the wellbore carrying entrained drill cuttings. An active differential pressure device (APD device), such as a jet pump, turbine or centrifugal pump, in fluid communication with the returning fluid creates a differential pressure across the device, which alters the pressure below or downhole of the device. The APD device can be driven by a positive displacement motor, a turbine, an electric motor, or a hydraulic motor. A controller controls the operation of the APD device in response to programmed instructions and/or one or more parameters of interest detected by one or more sensors. A preferred system is a closed loop system that maintains the wellbore at under-balance condition, at-balance condition or over-balance condition.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 20, 2002Publication date: May 29, 2003Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Peter Aronstam, Volker Krueger, Sven Krueger, Harald Grimmer, Roger Fincher, Larry Watkins, Peter Fontana

Patent number: 6543132Abstract: The present invention provides methods of forming mud motors. In one method, rollers are urgingly stroked against a tubular member having a mandrel therein that has an outer profile which is the inverse of the desired profile of the stator. In another method, rollers are urged and rotated radially on the tubular member with the mandrel disposed in the tubular member. In yet another method, dies are pressed against the tubular member having a mandrel with a desired outer profile. In another method, a molten metal is deposited over a mandrel with an outer lobed surface that is substantially the inverse of the desired inner profile of the stator housing. The mandrel is then removed, leaving a metallic longitudinal member having an inner profile defined by the outer profile of the mandrel. In each of these methods, the inner surface of the resulting member has the profile defined by the outer profile of the mandrel.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1998Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Volker Krueger, Thorsten Regener, Markus Walterskoetter

Publication number: 20020195276Abstract: Determination of the rate of penetration (ROP) of drilling has usually been based upon surface measurements and may not be an accurate representation of the actual ROP. This can cause problems in Logging While Drilling (LWD). Because of the lack of a high-speed surface-to-downhole communication while drilling, a conventional method of measuring ROP at the surface does not provide a solution to this problem. However, the instantaneous ROP can be derived downhole with a certain degree of accuracy by utilizing an accelerometer placed in (or near) the tool to measure acceleration in the axial direction. When three-component accelerometers are used, the method may be used to determine the true vertical depth of the borehole.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 11, 2002Publication date: December 26, 2002Applicant: Baker Hughes, Inc.Inventors: Vladimir Dubinsky, Pushkar N. Patent number: 6446736Abstract: An MWD method and apparatus for determining parameters of interest in a formation has a sensor assembly mounted on a slidable sleeve slidably coupled to a longitudinal member, such as a section of drill pipe. When the sensor assembly is held in a non-rotating position, for instance for obtaining the measurements, the longitudinal member is free to rotate and continue drilling the borehole, wherein downhole measurements can be obtained with substantially no sensor movement or vibration. This is particularly useful in making NMR measurements due to their susceptibility to errors due caused by tool vibration. In addition, the substantially non-rotating arrangement of sensors makes it possible to efficiently carry out VSPs, reverse VSPs and looking ahead of the drill bit. A clamping device is used, for instance, to hold the sensor assembly is held in the non-rotating position.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2001Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Thomas Kruspe, Volker Krueger
