  • Publication number: 20060170906
Abstract: Systems and methods for illuminating a platen are provided. A hybrid illumination system uses both diffusion and collimation to efficiently provide a flat, uniform illumination at a platen. One or more diffusers are disposed between the illumination source array and a collimating lens. An illumination system is provided which uses diffused light to illuminate a platen in a print scanner. The illumination system has an illumination source array and a light wedge. The light wedge reflects light internally which makes the illumination even more diffuse. Sources are divided into at least a center region and a perimeter region. The density of sources provided in the perimeter region is greater than in the center region to correct for natural light falloff in the illumination system. Intensity control can be performed individually or in groups.

  • Publication number: 20060154606
Abstract: A first portable wireless communication device enters a PICONET and establishes unencrypted communications with a second wireless communication device, the PICONET master. The first portable wireless communication device transmits identification information to the second wireless communication device using a conventional short-distance communications protocol. The second wireless communication device transmits, in a novel FEMTONET communications mode, an encryption key to the first portable wireless communication device. The first portable wireless communication device then securely transmits encrypted messages based on the encryption key to the second wireless communication device using the conventional short-distance communications protocol.

  • Publication number: 20060027476
Abstract: A sealed container system for packaging and displaying a live plant for sale. The system has a subcontainer that is partially filled with a hydrogel, or has a divider lid that separates the hydrogel from the rest of the container system. A lid covers the subcontainer, where the lid has a tapered or elongate lumen to accommodate the plant roots while preventing the leakage of the hydrogel. The clear or transparent container, with the hydrogel, allows the container to operate as a miniature greenhouse allowing the plant to be displayed for an extended period of time without the need for interventional care by a human.

  • Publication number: 20050225212
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for sensing biometric information in a finger with piezo ceramic elements. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes an array of discrete piezo ceramic elements and filler. The array of discrete piezo ceramic elements is responsive to acoustic characteristics of parts of the finger. The filler is distributed between the discrete piezo ceramic elements and provides acoustic attenuation and electric isolation between the discrete piezo ceramic elements. A protective layer can receive a ridge pattern of the finger positioned proximate to the array. Air in valleys between ridges of the ridge patten of the finger acts as an acoustic barrier. A backing layer (air or foam) can also be provided.

  • Publication number: 20050156491
Abstract: The present invention relates to composite piezoelectric apparatus, transducers and methods of manufacture. In an embodiment, a composite piezoelectric apparatus has a sacrificial base and pillar array. Different volume percents of piezoelectric material are used in the sacrificial base and pillar array. A first volume percent in the base is lower than the second volume percent in the pillar array. In this way, the sacrificial base can be easily removed from the pillar array after the base and pillar array are sintered in the manufacture of a final composite piezoelectric transducer. A method of manufacturing a composite piezoelectric transducer from a sacrificial base and pillar array and a composite piezoelectric transducer made by the method are provided. A composite piezoelectric transducer stack is provided.

  • Publication number: 20040215560
Abstract: An automated computer based payment system and method allows a variety of different payment requesting sources to be coupled to a variety of payment processors. An integrated payment engine receives payment requests from the payment requesting sources and generates therefrom payment instructions that are delivered to the payment processors. The integrated payment engine employs profile information defining payment requesting source and payment processor preferences and requirements to generate the payment instructions from the payment requests. Additional and/or different payment requesting sources and payment processors can be integrated into the system easily by modifying the profile information. The integrated payment engine also employs flexible risk and operational preferences to generate automatically a payment instruction which will implement the payment request so as to optimize a balance of factors associated with making a payment, such as risk and cost.

  • Publication number: 20040210520
Abstract: An improved system and an associated method for entering, updating, and maintaining information relating to payees is disclosed which includes data supplied by consumers, data contained in biller invoices, and data relating to the mechanisms to be used for payment of billers. The payee information management system of the present invention maintains proprietary biller remittance information in a database which is separate from the database containing consumer/payee information which has been provided by consumers, eliminating the need to place remittance information in entries for each payee of each consumer, thereby making the consumer/payee database substantially smaller and more efficient. The payee information management system of the present invention also has a standard set of payee data which is available to send to third parties to obtain further bill payment business without requiring that proprietary biller remittance information be divulged.

  • Patent number: 6774508
Abstract: A battery (102) powers a wireless telephone's power amplifier (106) through a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) (104). The SMPS has a capacity lower than the maximum power requirements of the amplifier. When a controller (116) senses that an amplifier power-requirement threshold has been exceeded, it closes a switch (114) parallel to the SMPS, allowing power to flow from the battery to the amplifier without passing through the SMPS. This architecture allows the use of a smaller SMPS, and eliminates SMPS-generated noise to the amplifier when the amplifier is least able to tolerate such noise, namely, under high power conditions.
