  • Patent number: 7709076
Abstract: A honeycomb body is formed of alternating layers that are smooth and partially structured. The layers form cavities that allow a fluid to flow in an axial flow direction. The structured layers have structural extremities in contact with smooth neighboring layers and inverted sections in the vicinity of their structural extremities. The sections protrude into the cavities and have a form approximately inverse of the structural extremities in a cross-section through the honeycomb body that runs perpendicularly to the flow direction in such a way that breaks are formed in the structural extremities. Counter-structures are configured in the vicinity of the inverted sections and/or structural extremities in the smooth layers. The structures engage with the structural extremities and/or inverted section. In the honeycomb body, relative displacements of the two layers in the flow direction are prevented by the co-operation of the inverted sections and the counter-structures.

  • Patent number: 7476366
Abstract: A catalyst carrier body has a geometrical longitudinal axis, a honeycomb body and a housing. A corrugated casing with an outer side and an inner side is disposed between the honeycomb body and the housing. The corrugated casing is connected to the housing at attachment sections on the outer side thereof by brazing. The attachment sections lie substantially on a common circumferential line and have the narrowest possible width in direction of a longitudinal axis. The attachment sections have an overall surface area permitting them to securely hold the honeycomb body under operating conditions. A high retention degree for the connection between the honeycomb body and housing can thus be achieved even with a shrinking of the diameter of the honeycomb body at end sides during the service life thereof.

  • Publication number: 20080155967
Abstract: A method for operating a particle trap, in particular an open particle trap, in an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine, includes determining a first point in time in which the particle trap falls below a first effectiveness limiting value, increasing the effectiveness of the particle trap by adjusting at least one specific operating parameter of the internal combustion engine, while exhaust gas produced by the internal combustion engine does not exceed a temperature of 500° C. in the vicinity of the particle trap, determining a second point in time in which the particle trap exceeds a second effectiveness limiting value, and activating normal operation of the internal combustion engine. The method and an associated device ensure operation of an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine, with conservation of fuel, savings of materials and simultaneous high effectiveness of the particle trap integrated into the exhaust gas system.

  • Patent number: 7258843
Abstract: An assembly includes a honeycomb body secured by an inner casing tube in a housing, in particular a housing of an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. The inner casing tube is also disposed in an approximately axially central position around the honeycomb body and is connected, in particular brazed, thereto in at least one axial connection region. The inner casing tube has a region within the axial connection region in which it is connected to the honeycomb body on the inside or attached directly adjacent the latter on the outside and is connected to the housing. Regions of the inner casing tube which are not connected to the housing but are connected to the honeycomb body toward the inside are constructed as radially elastic spring elements.

The tubular jacket is connected to the honeycomb body in at least one axial partial-region by a joining technique. A sleeve has an axial length shorter than the axial extent of the honeycomb body and is disposed on an outer region of the honeycomb body, in the vicinity of an end surface. The sleeve has an inner shell surface connected by a joining technique to the end regions of the sheet-metal layers at the end surfaces. The honeycomb body projects beyond an edge of the tubular jacket in a projecting section surrounded by the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 7179429
Abstract: The catalytic exhaust gas cleaning system and a corresponding compensation layer are especially suitable for automotive applications. The novel configuration reliably protects a so-called swelling mat from strongly pulsating streams of exhaust gases, even at very high ambient temperatures. A compensation layer which includes the swelling mat and an insulting mat is disposed between an outer housing and a honeycomb of an exhaust gas purification system. An edging is produced preferably by folding the insulating mat. The folder-over edge bead is thicker than the remaining inner area of the insulating mat. Next to the side of the inner area facing away from the honeycomb, the welling mat is arranged so that the thicker area of the edging of the insulating mat covers those edge areas of the swelling mat which are at risk of abrasion. The compensation layer preferably consists of a composite material which can be wound.

  • Patent number: 7169341
Abstract: A process is provided for producing extruded honeycomb bodies with passages, in particular as catalyst carrier bodies for the cleaning of exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine. The passages are bounded by wall regions which are at least partly provided with structures. The honeycomb body is extruded with an extrusion die in such a way that an additional relative movement between the honeycomb body and the extrusion die takes place, leading to a deformation of the wall regions of the passages. An extrusion die for producing extruded honeycomb bodies includes a multiplicity of secured profiled pins and a housing, which together form an extrusion mask. The extrusion mask is variable during the production process, so that wall regions with the structures can be formed. Honeycomb bodies which have structures in the interior that are suitable for influencing a stream of fluid flowing through can therefore be produced in a manner which is simple in terms of production engineering.

  • Patent number: 7083860
Abstract: A metallic honeycomb body has an axial length, a partial volume covering at least 55% of the axial length, a radial dimension of at least 20 mm, an inflow end side and an outflow end side. The honeycomb body includes sheet-metal layers structured to permit a fluid to flow through the honeycomb body in a flow direction from the inflow end side to the outflow end side. The sheet-metal layers each have a surface area, partial regions and edges at the end sides. Each of the sheet-metal layers have a multiplicity of holes formed at least in the partial regions in the partial volume. Each of the holes have a hole surface area of between 1 and 120 mm2. The sheet-metal layer surface area in the partial volume is reduced by 10 to 80% by the holes as compared to a sheet-metal layer without holes. The partial volume is disposed at a distance from each of the end sides, preventing the holes from touching and from cutting through the edges of the end sides of the sheet-metal layers.
