  • Patent number: 6487854
Abstract: An exhaust gas system includes a collector for joining exhaust gas flows from two or more cylinders of a combustion engine. The collector has an outlet cross-section behind which a tubular jacket is disposed. A honeycomb body is disposed in the tubular jacket. A space through which a flow is to take place is defined between the outlet cross-section and the honeycomb body. At least one guide surface is disposed in the space for diverting at least a part of the exhaust gas flows. A method is provided for applying exhaust gas flows to a honeycomb body. The flows arrive at the honeycomb body at least partly from different directions. The exhaust gas flows are diverted by at least a first guide surface, before they impinge upon the honeycomb body, in such a way that they flow in a direction at least partly opposite to that of the exhaust gas flows, and their incidence upon the honeycomb body is thus delayed.

  • Patent number: 6403039
Abstract: A catalytic converter for a small engine and a method for manufacturing the same include a honeycomb body coated with catalytically active material and made from at least partly structured layers of sheet metal with channels for the passage of exhaust gas. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, the honeycomb body is placed in a silencer housing disposed in the proximity of the engine, in such a way that at least a predominant portion of exhaust gas of the small engine has to flow through the honeycomb body. The honeycomb body is a layered, wound or folded stack of sheet metal layers, which is squeezed into the silencer housing, plastically deforming at least 10% and preferably 20 to 30% of the channels, so that it completely fills at least a partial volume of the housing.

  • Publication number: 20020061268
Abstract: A combustion engine assembly includes a combustion engine with a displacement and a downstream catalytic converter for cleaning exhaust gas. The catalytic converter has a geometric surface and an effectiveness for converting at least one harmful component in the exhaust gas into harmless components. The catalytic converter has at least one honeycomb body, all of which together have a total volume. The volume is selected in such a way that it is smaller than the displacement by a factor of 0.6. However, the geometric surface is dimensioned in such a way that the catalytic converter has an effectiveness of more than 98%. The honeycomb body is preferably a metallic honeycomb body formed of layered and/or wound and at least partly structured sheet metal layers. Channels of the honeycomb body are separated from one another by channel walls. An average thickness of the channel walls is at most 40 micrometers, preferably at most 35 micrometers and in particular between 18 and 32 micrometers.

  • Publication number: 20020050475
Abstract: A particle filter of metal foil has walls defining fluid flow channels with inlets and outlets. A first channel has an open entry cross section at a first end side extended partway into the first channel. A second channel has an open exit cross section substantially corresponding to the entry cross section. One of the walls of the first channel has filter passage perforations leading to the second channel. A closure in the first channel, opposite the entry cross section, toward a second end side, closes off the first channel to the fluid. A process for producing a particle filter from metal foil includes pulling the metal foil from an endless storage device. A joining element or strip is applied to the metal foil. The metal foil is shaped into subsequent channels. The metal foil is wound or stacked to form first and second channels in opposite directions. The first channel has an open entry cross section at the first end side extending partway into the first channel.

  • Patent number: 6371360
Abstract: A method for applying brazing material to metal structures is used, in particular, for honeycomb bodies of exhaust gas catalytic converters. The brazing material is applied in the form of a powder and is firmly held to the metal structures through the use of an adhesive material acting as a bonding agent, binder or adhesion promoter. The adhesive material that is used to firmly hold the brazing powder assumes two different states with respect to its adhesive action during the production process of the metal structure. A first state is less adhesive and a second state is more strongly adhesive. The adhesive strength can be selected or adjusted as a function of external conditions, especially temperature. Therefore, at a given time the adhesive material can be put into a state which is suitable for each production step, as a result of which the brazing material quality is increased and the production process is simplified.

  • Patent number: 6316384
Abstract: A honeycomb body configuration includes a metal housing accommodating a honeycomb body having a plurality of channels separated from one another by dividing walls. The honeycomb body has varying radial strength along its periphery. A compensation layer is disposed at least in partial regions of the periphery between the housing and the honeycomb body. The compensation layer has at least two support sections in the peripheral direction of the honeycomb body which exert greater forces in the radial direction upon the honeycomb body than outside the support sections in remaining peripheral regions. The support sections are disposed in regions where the honeycomb body has greater radial strength. Steps can be taken to produce the support sections on the compensation layer, by using support segments on the housing and/or beads on the honeycomb body, in each case in the peripheral regions of greater strength.

  • Patent number: 6274099
Abstract: In a device for the catalytic conversion of exhaust gases in an exhaust system, in particular an exhaust system of a combustion engine, and a process for manufacturing the same, a catalyst carrier body is provided with a multiplicity of channels through which an exhaust gas can flow. At least a part of a free flow cross-section of the channels is closed in an exhaust gas flow direction by plastic deformation of channel walls in an outer annular region of the catalyst carrier body. The plastic deformation can be carried out with a tool. The tool has a disk rotatable about an axle. The disk is pressed with force against the catalyst carrier body and the jacket so that a plastic deformation of the jacket tube and the channel walls occurs. A circumferential bead directed towards the carrier body is produced. Other techniques for plastic deformation are possible.

  • Patent number: 6224691
Abstract: A honeycomb body is produced in which metal sheets are stacked and/or wound in a layered configuration. The metal sheets are suitably structured so as to form passages through which a fluid can flow. At least a part of the sheet layers initially comprises a laminate material with a layer of chromium-containing steel and a layer primarily formed of aluminum. The laminate is substantially homogenized by diffusion to a stratified sheet in a subsequent heat treatment. The honeycomb body is assembled with at least a part of the sheet layers provided a structure which increases the degree of elasticity of the honeycomb body and/or the pressure in relation to surface area of the contact locations prior to and in the heat treatment. The honeycomb body is fitted into a tubular casing with such a prestressing that in the heat treatment the contact locations between the sheet layers remain in contact.
