    Abstract: In a transmitting system for a small-sized vehicle, a centrifugal clutch, and a torque converter including a pump impeller connected to an output drum of the centrifugal clutch and a turbine impeller connected to an output gear, are placed between a crankshaft of an engine and the output gear. The pump impeller and the output drum adjacent to the pump impeller are integrally coupled, with an open surface of the output drum facing to an opposite side to the pump impeller, to be constructed as a single component. Thus, occurrence of rotation vibrations and unusual noises can be prevented without requiring machining with high precision, and the numbers of components and assembling steps can be reduced while providing favorable maintainability.

    Abstract: A quantum-dot photon turnstile device is capable of producing a stream of regulated and directed single pairs of photons with opposite circular polarizations. This device operates by injecting pairs of electrons and holes, alternately, into a single quantum dot, where they combine to form photons. The device will efficiently and reliably produce a directed beam of such photons at regular time intervals. It will be able to operate at high frequency and at high temperature. Such a stream of regulated photon pairs will be useful in quantum cryptography, quantum computing, low-power optical communications, as a light standard, and in many other areas of technology and fundamental science.

    Abstract: A quantum computer comprises a crystal lattice having storage atoms. The storage atoms have nuclear storage spins, and quantum bits are stored as orientations of the storage spins. A magnetic field is applied to the crystal, the magnetic field having a gradient on the order of 1T/&mgr;m. The gradient is generated by a micromagnet. The electrons of the crystal acquire a regular order, and the storage spins are initialized by inducing combined electron-nucleus transitions in the crystal, thereby transferring the electronic order to the storage spins. The storage spins are decoupled from each other by a decoupling magnetic field. Quantum logic operations are performed on the storage spins. Certain quantum logic operations require a modification of the decoupling field to recouple a plurality of the storage spins. Final polarizations of the storage spins are measured.

    Abstract: The automatic transmission of the present invention prevents fluctuation of torque transmission through a band brake. In the hydraulic operator for the band brake, a resilient elastic cushion is provided between a rod abutting one end of the band of the band brake and a piston. Any slippage between the band and drum of the band brake will result in oscillation of the rod. However, the elastic cushion absorbs oscillation of the rod, thereby isolating the piston from that oscillation.

    Abstract: A compact ZIF type socket is provided having the durability to withstand numerous movements of the slider. The ZIF type IC socket 1 consists of a base housing assembly 10 that accommodates numerous contacts, and a cover housing assembly 40 that can slide over the base housing assembly 10. The cover housing assembly 40 is caused to move in relative terms by inserting a plate-form tool 99 into tool insertion holes 65 and 85 respectively formed in a metal supporting plate 60 on the side of the base housing assembly 10 and a metal supporting plate 80 on the side of the cover housing assembly 40, and rotating this tool 99. The action points of the tool insertion holes 65 and 85 contacted by the tool 99 are formed as circular-arc-form projections 75, 76, 95 and 96. Accordingly, the force of the tool 99 can be transmitted to the base housing assembly 10 and cover housing assembly 40 without causing indentation or damage, etc.

    Abstract: An insulated lattice is prepared with a plurality of lattice oriented atoms to create a substantially planar surface having a lattice arrangement. Any unsatisfied chemical bonds are terminated along the substantially planar surface by placing atoms at the site of the unsatisfied chemical bonds to terminate the unsatisfied chemical bonds and insulate the surface to form a platform. In one aspect of the invention, the insulator atoms are removed at predetermined locations. Atoms to form the atomic chain are placed at predetermined locations on the insulated lattice platform to form a first atomic chain which behaves as one of a conductor, a semiconductor and an insulator. A second atomic chain is also placed at predetermined locations on the insulated lattice platform so that the second chain behaves as another of a conductor, a semiconductor and an insulator.
