  • Patent number: 5418056
Abstract: A polymer composite includes a thermoplastic plastic polymer having a fine grain metal or metal oxide dispersed therein. Preferably, the fine grains has a size of about 1,000 nm or less. A method of making the polymer composite by adhering a metal layer to a thermoplastic polymer layer in a thermodynamically nonequilibrated condition followed by relaxation of the polymer layer to obtain thermodynamic equilibrium which causes the metal layer to be absorbed by the polymer layer as fine grains is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5371122
Abstract: A polymer composite contains colorant molecules dispersed therein. The colorant molecules can be dispersed in the polymer or bound to the polymer molecules. When the polymer is a polyamide, the polyamide is in a noncrystalline state due to the inhibition of crystallization imparted by the size and shape of the colorant molecules because the colorant is separated on a molecular level. A high colorant availability is obtained. A method of producing the polymer composite includes the steps of forming a metastable polymer resin layer, applying a film of colorant to the layer, stabilizing the layer, dissolving the stable layer in a solvent, aspirating the solution to remove impurities and aggregates and then removing the solvent. A polymer composition can be produced by mixing the polymer composite with a polymer.

  • Patent number: 4833305
Abstract: A thermally self-regulating elastomeric composition and heating element made therefrom. The composition includes a body of elastomeric material in which is distributed electrically conductive particulate material, such as carbon black. Short fibers are also distributed in the elastomeric matrix. In the disclosed invention, the short fibers are present in the amount of approximately 0.5 to 20 volume percent. In one alternate form, the matrix is foamed. Different arrangements of the electrodes in electrical conductive association with the thermally self-regulating elastomeric body are disclosed. Preferred proportions and characteristics of the particulate conductive material and short fibers providing optimum thermally self-regulating characteristics of the composition are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4765930
Abstract: A pressure-responsive variable electrical resistive rubber material including at least one inorganic filler selected from a group consisting of conductive carbon black, short fibers of nonmetallic inorganic material, powder, and whiskers. The filler is dispersed in a matrix formed of an electrically insulative rubber. The rubber material exhibits a gradually reducing resistance value as a gradually increased pressing force is applied thereto. The rubber material provides a wide range of relationship between the applied force and the electrical resistance thereof. The rubber material is adapted for use as a pressure sensor having excellent fatigue creep resistance.

  • Patent number: 4730932
Abstract: In a transmissivity inspection apparatus, laser beam is radiated onto an object to be inspected. Irregularly reflected laser light components produced from the object are detected by a photoelectric converter element. The transmissivity of the object with respect to the laser beam is inspected by a discriminator, based on a specific pattern of the irregularly reflected laser light components detected by the photoelectric converter element. The specific pattern of a transparent substance differs from that of a nontransparent substance, thereby to discriminate the nontransparent substance from the transparent substance.

  • Patent number: 4715176
Abstract: A manufacture of an impact-resistant power transmission belt tensile cord and belt using the same. The tensile cords of the invention are caused to have coordinated characteristics of toughness, elongation under load, shrinkage, and shrinkage stress so as to provide absorption of longitudinal and transverse impact shock forces to the belt during high power transmission therethrough, with minimized dimensional changes of the belt over the useful life thereof, permitting the belt to be utilized in multiple parallel drive applications in extremely rigorous environments with minimized maintenance. The tensile cords are adhesively coated, thermally drawn and set multifilament polyester cords.

  • Patent number: 4501590
Abstract: The invention provides a method for instantly dyeing a sewing machine thread without necessity of interrupting the stitching operation with a sewing machine. The method is implemented with a dyeing liquid consisting of 2-15 wt. % of a water color paste, 15-30 wt. % of an acrylic ester emulsion and the reminder water, the dyeing liquid being uniformly applied to the thread by way of sponge or felt. The thread is then brought into contact with a plate heated to a temperature of 180.degree.-240.degree. C. for 1-3 seconds for permanent set of the dyeing liquid on the thread.
