  • Patent number: 5379014
Abstract: A vacuum circuit breaker comprising an external coil which is arranged outside a vacuum interrupter, and a power supply circuit which causes current to flow through the external coil. An overcurrent flowing through the main circuit of the circuit breaker, which leads to a load, is detected by an overcurrent tripping device so as to separate the movable electrode of the vacuum interrupter from the fixed electrode thereof and to subject a striking electric arc to a magnetic flux generated axially of the vacuum interrupter by the electrodes themselves. Thereafter, a trigger gap is ignited by a signal delivered from the overcurrent tripping device, so as to introduce a reverse current into the vacuum interrupter. Herein, the trigger gap is ignited by a signal delivered from the overcurrent tripping device, in order that the zero point of currents may be formed at the point of time at which the axial magnetic flux has been canceled by the resulting current of the external coil.

  • Patent number: 5305174
Abstract: An electrical power system protection device includes a circuit breaker and a switch connected in series to a power line. The protection device also has a current limiting element connected in parallel to the circuit breaker. When the level of electrical current flowing in the power line, detected by a current detector, has exceeded a predetermined first set level, a first over-current detector delivers immediately a trip command to the circuit breaker. As a consequence, fault current is commutated to the current limiting element so that any drop of voltage in the power line upstream of the circuit breaker is greatly suppressed. When a state in which a predetermined second set level is exceeded by the detected current level is continued beyond a predetermined period, a second over-current detector delivers an off command to the switch, thus protecting the upstream portion of the power line against the fault in this power line.

  • Patent number: 4975800
Abstract: A contact abnormality detection system for use in a gas-insulated switchgear or other power transmission or distribution apparatus. A gas-insulated switchgear includes a hermetic housing, an insulating gas sealed in the housing, and conductors in the housing having contacts for providing a path for a large current and being electrically insulated from the housing. An abnormality in the contacts causes the contacts to generate vibrations when a large current flows through them. A vibration detector detects vibrations generated by the switchgear including the vibrations generated by the contacts. The frequency spectrum of the vibrations detected by the vibration detector is analyzed to detect if the vibrations contain frequency components in the range of 200 to 500 Hz which meet predetermined criteria.
