Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The invention relates to an inert-gas mixture for use in metal inert-gas welding. In particular, the invention relates to an inert-gas mixture for use in metal inert-gas welding of nickel materials.

[0002] The welding argon, which is normally used as the inert gas for metal inert-gas welding (MIG welding) of nickel materials does not ensure adequate arc stability, as a result of which increased spatter formation occurs during welding and, furthermore, the flow behavior in the welding bath is poorer.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

[0003] The invention is based on the object of providing an inert-gas mixture for use in MIG welding, in particular of nickel materials, which reduces the amount of spatter formed during the welding process and considerably improves the flow behavior.

[0004] The object is achieved by an inert gas which contains a proportion by volume of nitrogen (N2) of 0.5-2.0%, and the rest is argon (Ar).

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0005] When carrying out MIG welding on nickel materials using the argon/nitrogen inert-gas mixture according to the invention, arc stability is ensured with a considerable reduction in the amount of spatter formed and with a considerable improvement in the flow behavior, thus ensuring essentially optimized welding quality.

[0006] An inert-gas mixture which has been successfully tested in practice for MIG welding of nickel materials has 1.0% of N2 and the rest is argon.

[0007] MIG welding tests with such an inert-gas mixture have led to good results, and thus to essentially optimized welding quality for nickel materials, both in terms of reducing the amount of spatter formed and in terms of improving the flow behavior.

Claims
