Description

This invention claims priority to provisional patent application Ser. No. 60/981,934, filed Oct. 23, 2007, which is incorporated by reference. The invention will be used in relation to lubricants, and more particularly to lubricating gasketed pipe and fittings to allow assembly.

I. BACKGROUND II. Summary

In accordance with one embodiment, a lubricant includes water, vegetable oil, polymeric thickener, and a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

III. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In one embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: up to 1% acrylic acid copolymer, between 0.1 to 1% acrylic acid homopolymer (as a polymeric thickener), up to 1% biocide, between 0% and 15% castor oil, between 0.5% and 5% polyethylene oxide, up to 60% propylene glycol, up to 1% sodium hydroxide, up to 1% petroleum derivatives, up to 1% nonyl phenoxypolyethoxyethanol, and up to 89% water.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, and a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, an anti-freeze, a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, a biocide, an emulsifying agent, a base, a surfactant, and a defoamer.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, and a colligative agent.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, and a surfactant.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, and a base.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: water, a vegetable oil, a polymeric thickener, a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, and a biocide.

In another embodiment, the lubricant contains the following: approximately 84% to approximately 89% water, approximately 3% to approximately 8% vegetable oil, approximately 0.1% to approximately 1% polymeric thickener, and approximately 0.5% to approximately 2% water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

In one embodiment, the lubricant is produced by creating a pre-mix of polyethylene oxide and propylene glycol and a pre-mix of an emulsifying agent, castor oil, and a polymeric thickening agent. A container is filled with water, to which is added a biocide and a surfactant. The pre-mix of polyethylene oxide propylene glycol and the pre-mix of the emulsifying agent, castor oil, and thickening agent are added to the water. This entire mixture is let down with water and sodium hydroxide. The end product is a wet lubricant that can be added to various types of materials. In this embodiment, the lubricant is a smooth, grit-free paste, which remains a paste at temperatures up to approximately 212° F. (100° C.). The lubricant in this embodiment has a temperature range use of approximately 0° F. (−17° C.) to approximately 212° F. (100° C.), is nonflammable, non-toxic, suitable for use in potable water systems, is substantially odorless, and non-corrosive.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant to the water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant to the water, adding a biocide to the water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant to the water, adding a biocide to the water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, and adding a base to the container.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, such that the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, such that the water is approximately 84% to approximately 89% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, such that the water is approximately 84% to approximately 89% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 3% to approximately 8% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, and adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, such that the water is approximately 84% to approximately 89% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 3% to approximately 8% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 2% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, such that the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the antifreeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, such that the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the antifreeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the surfactant is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant, adding a biocide, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, such that the water is approximately 300% to approximately 99% by weight, the antifreeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the surfactant is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the biocide is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant, adding a biocide, adding a defoamer, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, such that the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the antifreeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the surfactant is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the biocide is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the defoamer is approximately 0.011% to approximately 1% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.11% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In another embodiment, the lubricant is produced by combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener, filling a container with water, adding a surfactant, adding a biocide, adding a defoamer, adding the vegetable oil/thickener combination, adding antifreeze to a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant, then adding the mixture of antifreeze and dispersant to the container, and adding a base to the container, such that the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the antifreeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the surfactant is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the biocide is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the defoamer is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the base is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

In one embodiment, the polymeric thickener is acrylic acid homopolymer, the polymeric dispersant is polyethylene oxide, the colligative agent is propylene glycol, the emulsifying agent is a cross-linked copolymer of acrylic acid and alkyl acrylate, the base is sodium hydroxide, the surfactant is petroleum derivatives, and the defoamer is nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol. In the above embodiments, it is to be understood that any an vegetable oil can be used, any polymeric thickener can be used, any water-soluble, polymeric dispersant can be used, any colligative agent can be used, any surfactant can be used, any base can be used, any biocide can be used, and any defoamer can be used, as long as chosen using sound chemical judgment.

At least one embodiment has been described, hereinabove. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the above methods may incorporate changes and modifications without departing from the general scope of this invention. It is intended to include all such modifications and alterations in so far as they come within the scope of the appended claims or the equivalents thereof.

Other than in the operating examples, or where otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients, reaction conditions, and so forth used in the specification and claims are to be understood as being modified in all instances by the terms “about” or “approximately.” Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the following specification and attached claims are approximations that may vary depending upon the desired properties sought to be obtained by the present invention. At the very least, and not as an attempt to limit the application of the doctrine of equivalents to the scope of the claims, each numerical parameter should at least be construed in light of the number of reported significant digits and by applying ordinary rounding techniques.

Notwithstanding that the numerical ranges and parameters setting forth the broad scope of the invention are approximations, the numerical values set forth in the specific examples are reported as precisely as possible. Any numerical value, however, inherently contain certain errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation found respective testing measurements.

Claims

1. A water-soluble lubricant comprising:

84% to 89% water;
3% to 8% vegetable oil;
6% to 11% propylene glycol;
0.5% to 2% polyethylene oxide;
0.1% to 1% homopolymer acrylic acid;
less than 0.01% copolymer acrylic acid;
less than 0.01% biocide;
less than 0.01% sodium hydroxide;
less than 0.01% petroleum derivatives; and,
less than 0.01% nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol.

2. A lubricant comprising:

water;
vegetable oil;
polymeric thickener; and,
a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

3. The lubricant of claim 2, wherein the lubricant further comprises a colligative agent.

4. The lubricant of claim 3, wherein the lubricant further comprises a surfactant.

5. The lubricant of claim 4, wherein the lubricant further comprises a base.

6. The lubricant of claim 5, wherein the lubricant further comprises a biocide.

7. The lubricant of claim 6, wherein the lubricant further comprises a defoamer.

8. The lubricant of claim 2, wherein the lubricant comprises:

approximately 30% to approximately 99% water.

9. The lubricant of claim 8, wherein the lubricant comprises:

approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% vegetable oil.

10. The lubricant of claim 9, wherein the lubricant comprises:

approximately 0.1% to approximately 1% polymeric thickener.

34. The lubricant of claim 33, wherein the lubricant comprises:

approximately 0.5% to approximately 2% water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

35. The lubricant of claim 34, wherein the lubricant comprises:

approximately 6% to approximately 11% colligative agent.

36. The lubricant of claim 35, wherein the lubricant comprises:

less than approximately 0.01% biocide.

37. The lubricant of claim 36, wherein the lubricant comprises:

less than approximately 0.01% base.

38. The lubricant of claim 37, wherein the lubricant comprises:

less than approximately 0.01% surfactant.

39. The lubricant of claim 38, wherein the lubricant comprises:

less than approximately 0.01% defoamer.

40. The lubricant of claim 9, wherein the polymeric thickener is a homopolymer acrylic acid.

41. The lubricant of claim 40, wherein the dispersant is polyethylene oxide.

42. The lubricant of claim 3, wherein the colligative agent is an antifreeze.

43. The lubricant of claim 42, wherein the antifreeze is propylene glycol.

44. The lubricant of claim 4, wherein the surfactant is nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol.

45. The lubricant of claim 5, wherein the base is sodium hydroxide.

46. The lubricant of claim 7, wherein the defoamer is petroleum derivatives.

47. A method for preparing a lubricant, the method comprising:

combining polyethylene oxide and propylene glycol;
combining an emulsifying agent and castor oil;
filling a container with water;
adding a surfactant to the water;
adding a biocide to the water;
adding combination of the polyethylene oxide and the propylene glycol;
adding combination of the emulsifying agent and the castor oil; and,
adding sodium hydroxide.

48. A method for preparing a lubricant, the method comprising:

combining a vegetable oil and a polymeric thickener;
filling a container with water;
adding combination of the vegetable oil and the polymeric thickener; and,
adding a water-soluble, polymeric dispersant.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the method further comprises:

mixing an anti-freeze with the dispersant prior to addition to the water.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the method further comprises:

adding a surfactant.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the method further comprises:

adding a biocide.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein the method further comprises:

adding a base.

53. The method of claim 48, wherein the water is approximately 30% to approximately 99% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 0.01% to approximately 15% by weight, the polymeric thickener is approximately 0.1% by to approximately 1% by weight, and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 5% by weight.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein the water is approximately 84% to approximately 89% by weight, the vegetable oil is approximately 3% to approximately 8% by weight and the dispersant is approximately 0.5% to approximately 2% by weight.

55. The method of claim 52, wherein the anti-freeze is approximately 0% to approximately 60% by weight, the biocide is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the surfactant is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, the defoamer is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight, and the base is approximately 0.01% to approximately 1% by weight.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the anti-freeze is propylene glycol, the surfactant is nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, the defoamer is petroleum derivatives, the base is sodium hydroxide, the vegetable oil is castor oil, the dispersant is polyethylene oxide, and the thickener is homopolymer acrylic acid, wherein the propylene glycol is approximately 6% to approximately 11%, the nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol is less than approximately 0.01%, the petroleum derivates are less than approximately 0.01%, the sodium hydroxide is less than approximately 0.01%, the castor oil is approximately 3% to approximately 8%, the polyethylene oxide is approximately 0.5% to approximately 2%, the water is approximately 84% to approximately 89%, and the biocide is less than approximately 0.01%.
