Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Mimulus plant named ‘Balburanim’, characterized by its medium orange-colored flowers, medium green-colored foliage, moderately vigorous, compact-upright growth habit, is disclosed.

Description

Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Mimulus aurantiacus.

Variety denomination: ‘Balburanim’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Mimulus plant botanically known as Mimulus aurantiacus and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Balburanim’.

The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Guadalupe, Calif. during August 2012. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Mimulus cultivars with large flowers, attractive flower coloration, and a compact-upright growth habit.

The new Mimulus cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Mimulus aurantiacus breeding selection coded MIM-348, not patented, characterized by its red and dark red bicolored flowers, medium green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, upright growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Mimulus aurantiacus breeding selection coded 10797-A, not patented, characterized by its light blush peach-colored flowers, dark green-colored foliage, and vigorous, semi-upright growth habit. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during March 2013 in a controlled environment in Guadalupe, Calif.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since March 2013 in Guadalupe, Calif. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘Balburanim’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Mimulus plant:

• • 1. Medium orange-colored flowers;
  • 2. Medium green-colored foliage; and
  • 3. Moderately vigorous, compact-upright growth habit.

Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in flower color. Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the male parent primarily in flower color and growth habit.

Of the many commercially available Mimulus cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is ‘Jelly Bean Orange’, not patented. However, in side-by-side comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Jelly Bean Orange’ in at least the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new cultivar are more compact than plants of ‘Jelly Bean Orange’; and
  • 2. Plants of the new cultivar have a larger corolla than plants of ‘Jelly Bean Orange’.

In addition, the new cultivar is similar to BURST Orange ‘Bosburan’, U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 13/986,618, now abandoned. However, in comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Bosburan’ in at least the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new cultivar have a flower color slightly different from plants of ‘Bosburan’; and
  • 2. Plants of the new cultivar have shorter pistils than plants of ‘Bosburan’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘Balburanim’. The plant was grown as one gallon stock pot in an outdoor nursery in Guadalupe, Calif. In early December 2016, the plant was transferred to a greenhouse in West Grove, Pa. and held under greenhouse conditions.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in February 2017 under natural light conditions in West Grove, Pa.

The following descriptions and measurements describe plants produced from cuttings from stock plants. The plants were grown in 1-gallon containers utilizing a soilless growth medium for 9 months in an outdoor nursery in Guadalupe, Calif. In early December 2016, the plants were transferred to West Grove, Pa. and held under greenhouse conditions to flower. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at 74° F. to 80° F. (23° C. to 27° C.) during the day and approximately 66° F. to 70° F. (19° C. to 21° C.) during the night. Greenhouse light levels of 2,100 footcandles to 4,122 footcandles were maintained during the day. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
