Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Heuchera plant named ‘IFHEORR’, characterized by its compact and uniformly mounded plant habit; densely foliated and bushy appearance; greyed orange and yellow green-colored leaves; long flowering period; numerous inflorescences with red purple-colored flowers; and good garden performance.

Botanical designation: Heuchera hybrid.

Cultivar denomination: ‘IFHEORR’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct Heuchera plant, botanically known as Heuchera hybrid and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘IFHEORR’.

The objective of the breeding program is to create new compact Heuchera plants with attractive leaf coloration and good garden performance.

The new Heuchera plant originated from a cross-pollination in May, 2011 in Andijk, The Netherlands of a proprietary selection of Heuchera hybrid identified as code number 083-11-K023-02, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with a proprietary selection of Heuchera hybrid identified as code number 083-10-C023-01, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Heuchera plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Andijk, The Netherlands in June, 2012.

Asexual reproduction of the new Heuchera plant by in vitro meristem culture in a controlled environment in Andijk, The Netherlands since May, 2015 has shown that the unique features of this new Heuchera plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The new Heuchera plant has not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘IFHEORR’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘IFHEORR’ as a new and distinct Heuchera plant:

• • 1. Compact and uniformly mounded plant habit.
  • 2. Densely foliated and bushy appearance.
  • 3. Greyed orange and yellow green-colored leaves.
  • 4. Long flowering period.
  • 5. Numerous inflorescences with red purple-colored flowers.
  • 6. Good garden performance.

Plants of the new Heuchera differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in leaf color as plants of the new Heuchera have greyed orange and yellow green-colored leaves whereas plants of the female parent selection have orange red-colored leaves. In addition, leaves of plants of the new Heuchera are more undulate than leaves of plants of the female parent selection.

Plants of the new Heuchera differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in leaf color as plants of the new Heuchera have greyed orange and yellow green-colored leaves whereas plants of the male parent selection have orange red and white-colored leaves. In addition, leaves of plants of the new Heuchera are more undulate than leaves of plants of the male parent selection.

Plants of the new Heuchera can be compared to plants of Heuchera hybrid ‘Zipper’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 25,428. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Heuchera differ primarily from plants of ‘Zipper’ in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Heuchera grow faster than plants of ‘Zipper’.
  • 2. Leaves of plants of the new Heuchera are not as undulate as leaves of plants of ‘Zipper’.
  • 3. Plants of the new Heuchera and ‘Zipper’ differ in leaf color as plants of the new Heuchera have greyed orange and yellow green-colored leaves whereas plants of ‘Zipper’ have golden amber to orange-colored leaves.

The accompanying colored photographs illustrates the overall appearance of the new Heuchera plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Heuchera plant.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the summer with three plants in a 15-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial Heuchera production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 10° C. to 25° C. and night temperatures ranged from 4° C. to 15° C. Plants were 18 weeks old when the photographs and the description were taken. In the description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

• Garden performance: Plants of the new Heuchera have been observed to have good garden performance and to tolerate high temperatures about 35° C. and to be suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 9.
