  • Patent number: 4007791
Abstract: Method of recovery of crude oil from oil bearing formations and/or sands especially where the oil in such formations have been partly exhausted or depleted and will flow into the wells drilled into such formations at a very slow rate or not at all due to the high degree of viscosity of the oil. The method comprises thinning the crude oil in the formation by introducing into the oil well a thinning fluid, such as a solvent or mixture of solvents that will flow into the formation and thin the oil in the formation sufficiently so that it will flow into the well. A further step is heating the solvent either before the solvent is introduced into the well or after it is in the well and pressurizing the well to increase the penetration of the solvent into the formation. One method of heating the solvent in the well is to introduce water into the well, allow the solvent to rise to the surface of the water and introduce sodium into the well to cause a reaction with the water for producing heat and pressure.

  • Patent number: 4007792
Abstract: Thixotropic compositions having initially relatively high viscosity which can decrease with time are prepared by admixing water and chloroform with an anionic surfacant, a cationic surfactant, an acid to adjust the pH of the aqueous phase to 4.5 or less, and a buffer salt. These compositions are valuable drilling fluids, fracturing fluids, and surfactant fluids for chemical flooding in tertiary oil recovery.

  • Patent number: 4007794
Abstract: The above-ground growth of potatoes and like root crops are contacted with high voltage electricity several days prior to harvesting, the electricity desiccating the above-ground portion of the crops while not harming the tubers. A no-load voltage of about 20 kv with an energy density of about 11-15 kw/foot of width treated is effective. Low-bush blueberries, and like perennial crops, are pruned by contacting the above-ground growth thereof with electricity. Pruning, in the case of blueberries, is most effective when done approximately every other year in the case of blueberries, a no-load voltage of 10-20 kv with an energy density of about 2-3 kw/foot of width treated being effective.

  • Patent number: 4007797
Abstract: The device disclosed includes a housing which can be moved through the bore hole and anchored in the desired location for drilling a lateral hole. Located in the housing is a drill string guide or conductor having a bendable lower end. The conductor is movable to a position where its lower end is either inherently or forceably bent so that it provides a curved path leading toward the side wall of the bore hole. The conductor guides a drill string extending through the conductor to cause the drill string to drill a lateral hole in the side wall of the well bore. The drill string and conductor can be retracted into the housing when the lateral hole has been drilled, or a portion of the drill string may be left in the lateral hole as a drain pipe.

  • Patent number: 4007803
Abstract: An expandable ignition chamber within an upstanding cylinder is formed between its base and a massive free piston. Initial detonation of a combustible gas mixture within the chamber drives the piston upwardly to expose in sequence a series of vertically spaced gas inlets in the cylinder wall, through which the supply of gas is replenished to support a corresponding sequence of additional rapidly timed detonations. Repetitive seismic pulses are thereby supplied by the downward thrust of the base which is itself slidable with respect to the cylinder walls.

  • Patent number: 4007812
Abstract: A zoned demand elevator system in which elevator cars are associated with the zone in which they become available for assignment. Each zone has a plurality of graded assignment levels, with an available car entering the highest vacant assignment level of the associated zone. Available cars in predetermined eligible assignment levels of all of the zones are considered when an available car is to be assigned to a demand for elevator service. The order in which the various eligible assignment levels of the zones are considered is determined by the nature of the demand. When an available car is assigned to a demand, available cars, if any, in lower graded assignment levels of that zone advance one assignment level, and an undesignated available car waiting for a graded assignment level to be vacated is given a graded assignment level designation.

  • Patent number: 4007832
Abstract: The device is primarily adapted for use in hospitals and comprises a housing having a front window through which a digital display of sensed temperature is observed. The housing may receive one of preferably two probe holsters one of which has associated therewith a probe for oral use and the other of which has a probe for rectal use. Each probe holster is elongated in shape and has a passage for receiving a probe with the probe being fixedly wired into the holster so that the probe cannot be swapped between holsters. A holder is mounted on the top of the device and receives a cartridge of probe covers which are locked into the holder but are easily removed upon insertion of the probe into an individual cover. The holsters and associated probes are constructed to be autoclavable and gas sterilizable. The device is normally stored on a platform through which the batteries in the device are recharged between use of the device. The probe is of improved design and employs a thermistor sensor.

  • Patent number: 4007834
Abstract: A fastener package, for use in a fastener applicator apparatus and comprising a disc shaped carrier and a plurality of fasteners, each having an elongated shank and a head. The shanks of the fasteners pass through the carrier and the under surface of their heads rest on the carrier. The disc shaped carrier is circular and carries the fasteners evenly spaced on a circular line along the peripheral portion of the circular carrier. Also disclosed is an inherently stiff support and guide body which is useful as a magazine in the fastener applicator apparatus and which has teeth or grooves for a step-wise turning thereof in order to advance the fasteners, one at a time, to an application position in the fastener applicator apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4007836
Abstract: The ability of an open-ended corrugated-paperboard lamp wrapper to withstand compressive forces and retain an inserted frictionally-gripped lamp are both enhanced by orienting the corrugations so that they extend obliquely across the walls of the wrapper at an angle of from about 10.degree. to 35.degree. with respect to the transverse axis of the wrapper. The compressive strength of a single-lamp wrapper fabricated from single-face corrugated paperboard having corrugations offset by 20.degree. is increased by 19% and lamp-retention is increased by 20% compared to a conventional wrapper having corrugations that extend parallel to the transverse axis.

  • Patent number: 4007838
Abstract: This packet is so constructed as to prevent formation of liquid blisters at sealing areas, which are potential break points and which reduces the shelf life of the packet and does not look good and can cause loss of sterility. The packet has opposed walls which are sealed together at opposite sides and at one end, leaving the other end open for injection of liquid. The open end is lastly sealed. Capillary action of the liquid along the insides of the side seams of the packet can often reach the lastly sealed open end before sealing is accomplished, to cause a blister or weak point which can rupture. The present packet is provided with breaks in the side seams and below the top seam to delay capillary action of the liquid along the inside of the side seams from reaching the open end of the packet before said open end can be sealed, thus preventing formation of liquid blisters at the last sealed area of the packet.
