  • Patent number: 4164840
Abstract: Yarns or filaments from producers packages, having little or no twist therein and mounted upon two-for-one spindle units, are uptwisted, directed to a ply twisting unit where the twisted filaments are plied and downtwisted onto a takeup bobbin of a spindle unit. A selected percentage of the required twist is inserted as the plied, cabled filaments are wound upon the takeup bobbin and the remainder of the required twist inserted as the filaments are unwound from the takeup bobbin and directed to a winder unit. Alternatively, the rate of twist applied to the plied filaments may be increased by driving the traveler ring, thus increasing the life or the speed of the traveler which directs plied filaments to the driven takeup bobbin. Occasionally, when two-for-one spindle units are applying extremely high twist, which slows down the delivery of twisted plied filaments, the driven downtwist takeup spindle unit may employ a super high speed stationary traveler ring.

  • Patent number: 4164860
Abstract: A reciprocal ram at commencement of a forward stroke engages a cup-shaped article carrying it through metal working dies and against a doming die at reversal into a rearward stroke immediately followed by stripping of the article from the ram. The ram has an internal chamber constantly fed pressurized air through a rearward restricted orifice, the chamber opening freely of the ram forward end portion and internally of the article when thereon. By preselecting orifice size, chamber and article volumes matched with air pressure, a predetermined volume of air at predetermined pressure is confined in the ram forwardly against the article immediately prior to stripping and preferably engagement of the article by an external stripper results in an internal stripping assist by the confined pressurized air, the increasing exposed volume of the article increasing the air confinement volume reducing the air pressure progressively to substantially atmospheric at completion of article stripping.

  • Patent number: 4164862
Abstract: Apparatus for measurement of gases in a multiple component gas stream or sample is disclosed. A regulated pressure system delivers the gas to N thermal conductivity type detectors utilizing wheatstone bridges. The thermal conductivity detector utilizes a resistance heated element (one leg of the bridge) which heats a chamber, and the sample flow varies the heat by thermal conduction in the chamber. The circuit creates a feedback signal for purposes of stabilizing the temperature in the chamber at a specified level. As the feedback signal is varied as a result of the change in concentration in the sample flow, this change in feedback signal is a signal which is related to the input.

  • Patent number: 4164863
Abstract: A system and method analyzes tonosignals and other electrical signals representative of force-displacement information from applanating probes such as those initially to determine the presence of an acceptable waveform or tonosignal. Once an acceptable waveform is found, that waveform is analyzed further to locate the point of applanation. The level of the waveform at that point may be converted to a digital signal and displayed to indicate the pressure within the eye or other objects to which the probe is applied.

  • Patent number: 4164865
Abstract: A flowmeter for accurately determining the rate of flow of a gas substantially independent of its molecular composition and also for determining a measure of the velocity of sound in that gas. The gas flows through a transducer assembly. Disposed in the transducer are two cylindrical transducers each capable of producing or responding to acoustic compressions in the gas. The transducers are alternately switched between transmitting and receiving with one transducer at a given instant being used to transmit and the other to receive. The phase difference between the transmitted and the received signal for two successive transmit-receive cycles are stored with the difference between two successive stored phase differences indicating the magnitude and the direction of fluid flow and the sum of the stored phase differences providing a measurement of the velocity sound in that gas.

  • Patent number: 4164868
Abstract: A capacitive humidity transducer wherein an electrically non-conductive base carries at least a pair of electrically conductive coatings which are spaced from each other. A dielectric film which is active with respect to water absorption is also carried by the base and covers at least portions of the coatings, the dielectric film having a dielectric constant the value of which varies as a function of the extent to which water has been absorbed by the dielectric film. An outer electrically conductive, water-permeable layer is carried by the dielectric film with this film being situated at least in part between the coatings and the layer while the latter because of its water permeability permits moisture in the atmosphere to reach the dielectric film. The dielectric film maintains the outer layer permanently out of contact with at least one of the coatings, so that it is possible to measure between these coatings a capacitance which will be indicative of atmospheric humidity.
