Patent number: 4172569Abstract: Disclosed is a peripheral belt drive tape transport system wherein an endless loop drive belt, which is relatively stiff compared to the tape, peripherally drives tape wound supply and take-up hubs to transfer tape from one to the other and maintain a tension in the tape. The drive belt is supported by non-compliant guide means including a plurality of belt guide members, and has first and second portions extending in curved paths between the peripheries of said guide members while intermediately engaging the peripheries of the tape wound on the supply and take-up hubs respectively. The guide members have corresponding portions at first and second levels, the corresponding diameters of which afford different mechanical advantages. The drive belt engages the guide members at the first level. An endless tensioning belt engages the guide members at the second level for establishing a differential in tension between the first and second portions of the drive belt so as to produce a tension in the tape.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1977Date of Patent: October 30, 1979Assignee: Newell Research CorporationInventor: Chester W. Patent number: 4172571Abstract: A three actuator steering mechanism for rotating a strut type forward landing gear of an aircraft particularly adapted for use in ground steering. The actuators are of a linear push-pull construction and are mounted at both ends by rotatable joints. At one end the joints attach the actuators to a nonrotating segment of the landing gear structure, while at the opposite ends the joints connect the actuators to a steering collar through which the landing gear is actually rotated. With the landing gear aligned in the forward direction, the two laterally mounted actuators form moment arms with the steering collar about the vertical rotational axis of the landing gear, in the conventional fashion. The center actuator is attached with an orientation such that it contributes no steering torque with the landing gear facing forward but increasingly supplements the two lateral actuators as the steering angle of the steering collar diverges in either direction from forward.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1978Date of Patent: October 30, 1979Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Fredrick E. Patent number: 4172572Abstract: An exhaust stub for a turbo-prop engine which exits from the aircraft nacelle at a location other than the aft end. A fairing is attached to the exhaust stub to minimize frontal area for a given exhaust stub exit area, but free of the nacelle, because of the requirement for the exhaust stub to move relative to the nacelle. An end plate is secured about the exhaust stub and fairing, substantially parallel to and at close proximity to the nacelle. The end plate effectively improves the performance of the fairing, by eliminating the effect of the gap in the nacelle around the stub and also the gap between the fairing and the nacelle. Improving the performance of the fairing reduces the magnitude of the exhaust duct wake which in turn reduces the momentum definiency in the wake flow; reduces exhaust duct drag; reduces mixing of the exhaust gases into the wake region; and reduces nacelle sooting by exhaust gases.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1978Date of Patent: October 30, 1979Assignee: Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada Ltd.Inventors: Wilson C. Patent number: 4172576Abstract: A highway crossing warning system includes a motion detector transmitter and receiver respectively coupled to the track rails adjacent the highway crossing for detecting motion of an approaching train. Wrap-around approach sections initiate operation of the highway crossing warning, but once motion is detected, the motion detector can serve to inhibit the highway crossing warning, after a predetermined delay, if motion indication ceases. To increase the effectiveness of the motion detector, the motion detector transmitter impresses a modulated carrier onto the track rails, wherein the modulation is phase locked to the carrier. The receiver, tuned to the carrier frequency, detects the modulation, and then determines from the level of the modulated signal whether or not approaching motion is detected. The transmitter employs solid state circuits switched between saturated and off conditions to prevent circuit component failures from masking approach motion.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1977Date of Patent: October 30, 1979Assignee: General Signal CorporationInventors: Frank A.
