  • Patent number: 4173970
Abstract: A thermographic diagnostic device which places a visual mark directly on the skin to indicate localized areas exhibiting skin temperatures a predetermined amount above the temperature of the surrounding areas. A hand held probe with a temperature responsive sensing element and marking instrument at one end is placed in contact with the skin and moved across the body along a desired path. The marking instrument, preferably a pen, is actuated by a control unit when the temperature measured by the sensing element exceeds a preselected temperature relative to surrounding body areas, and a mark is placed on the skin. By moving the probe across the skin in a series of parallel paths, a pattern is placed on the skin corresponding to the localized area of excessive temperature differential.

  • Patent number: 4173971
Abstract: A system which is capable of allowing an attending physician to continuously monitor the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals produced by a cardiac patient. The signals, generated by the patient, are first recorded in real time over a predetermined time period established by the physician. At the conclusion of the predetermined time period a monitoring station is automatically alerted by telephone and commences receiving the patient's real time ECG signals directly. The recorded ECG signals are then transmitted in a compressed time fashion to the monitoring station simultaneously with the real time ECG signals. The monitoring station receives the compressed time and the real time transmitted signals and following analysis thereof transmits a report of selected portions of the ECG to the physician.

  • Patent number: 4173998
Abstract: Apparatus and a method of manufacturing a formed coil having multiple single row coil cores of varying lengths. Sheets of fins are cut from plate fin stock such that the fins within each sheet are connected to each other by rupturable tabular portions. The sheets of fins are then arranged in registration such that openings within the fins for the receipt of tubes are aligned and tubular members or hairpins may be inserted within the fins to form part of the fluid flow circuit of the coil. Since the hairpins for adjacent coil rows are of different lengths, when the multiple row coil core is bent each coil row is formed about a separate radius curvature so that the formed coil will be in the desired configuration. Prior to bending, the hairpins are expanded to form a heat transfer bond with the fins, the expansion process acting to rupture the tabular portions connecting the fins such that the fins on the hairpins become separately spaced along each hairpin.

  • Patent number: 4174011
Abstract: A sea floor template with vertical well guides or slots is lowered to the sea floor. Guide rails, such as a railroad track, are supported on top of the frame of the template in a path which extends along each well slot. A drilling guidance carousel is lowered to the template. Rollers on the drilling guidance carousel engage guide rails so that the carousel can be moved to each template well slot. Guidelines extend from the drilling guidance carousel to a floating drilling vessel for guiding drilling equipment from the vessels down through the template well slot which is aligned with the carousel well slot. Preferably, the template well slots are arranged in a circle at each corner of a rectangular sea floor template. The guide rails are arranged concentrically with the central axis of the circle of template well slots. Locking means are provided to hold the carousel drilling frame well slot aligned with any selected one of the well slots in the sea floor template.

  • Patent number: 4174014
Abstract: Storage batteries and/or aggregates thereof are constructed to provide a high impact absorbency, so that their mass will serve a dual function: storing electricity and absorbing collision impacts. The collision protection for humans also involves two separate functions: impact absorption and gradual deceleration. The former is achieved by adding highly shock absorbent closed cell foamed metal plates to the battery aggregate, the second by spacing these in such a way that the impact absorption occurs gradually, so that the deceleration at no point exceeds that of 7 times gravity acceleration. To this end the battery aggregate is designed so that the shock energy absorption occurs in many centers or zones of the battery aggregate, thus providing a safe deceleration curve over a distance equal to the distance from leading side to trailing side of the battery aggregates as installed.

  • Patent number: 4174017
Abstract: A steering system includes a sensor device which is responsive to excessive steering effort to actuate a power assist for steering. A housing rotatably receives an input member and an output member which are rotatable relative to each other when the steering effort is excessive. The housing includes an inlet communicating with a source of pressurized air and an outlet opening to atmosphere. The input member and output cooperate to define a passage communicating the inlet with the outlet such that limited rotation between the input member and output member varies the communication of pressurized air through the passage. When the communication of pressurized air through the passage is varied, a relay valve in communication with the inlet is operable to actuate the power assist.
