  • Patent number: 4177607
Abstract: An end surface machining apparatus is provided, wherein an end surface of a first workpiece is machined with a second workpiece being inserted into the first workpiece. First and second in-process gauges are engageable at their feelers with the end surface of the first workpiece and a reference end surface of the second workpiece during machining, respectively. A feed device is provided to move a work support toward the tool in the axial direction of the workpieces. A control device, controllably connected to the feed device, is responsive to output signals from both the in-process gauges, so that the end surface of the first workpiece is machined to have a predetermined size difference relative to the reference end surface of the second workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4177609
Abstract: An apparatus such as a belt sander including spaced apart rolls and adjustable mounting means for supporting at least one roll. An endless belt is positioned around the rolls and drive means are provided for the rolls and belt. Alignment means including a belt edge engaging means are operatively connected to the roll mounting means, and a resilient force is applied to hold the engaging means against a belt edge as the belt is moved by the drive means. This causes the engaging means to follow variations in the belt edge position, and this movement is transmitted to the mounting means whereby the variations are compensated.

  • Patent number: 4177621
Abstract: A method and apparatus for bagging bruisable discrete articles, such as apples. The apples are fed single file to a weighing device, and the feed of articles is terminated just before the desired predetermined weight of apples to be bagged. The weighing device is allowed to reach equilibrium, and then the weight of the apples is compared to the desired predetermined weight. If the weight is less than the desired amount, the apples are fed one by one to the weighing device until the predetermined weight is reached or exceeded, at which time the apples in the weighing device are dumped onto a pair of spiral brushes which convey the apples to a bagging station. At the bagging station, a bag is clamped and blown open, and is filled with apples being fed one at a time. The bag full condition is automatically sensed, at which point one of the clamps is released, and an arm supporting the other clamp is pivoted to swing the bag into operative association with an automatic tying machine.

  • Patent number: 4177647
Abstract: A method and system for preparing comestibles for frozen storage in which pressurized freezing air is utilized in conjunction with a substantially flat conveyance surface, both to aid in or contribute to the conveyance of the packages or containers as well as to effectuate the rapid freezing of the comestibles therein during the course of such conveyance through the system. In the preferred embodiment, the elongated conveyance deck is of space saving substantially helical form with successive descending turns underlying one another and with the space surrounded by the turns forming part of a plenum chamber into which pressurized freezing air is blown for admission into a laterally open plenum duct underlying the deck throughout its length. Such elongated plenum duct is tapered transversely beneath the deck for uniform distribution of pressurized freezing air to the discharge apertures in the deck by means of a transversely inclined duct-forming panel cooperating with the deck.

  • Patent number: 4177648
Abstract: A method of freezing a liquid is disclosed comprising the steps of establishing a freezing zone, delivering the liquid to the freezing zone so that the liquid runs across the freezing zone, and collecting the unfrozen liquid running off the freezing zone for return to the freezing zone. The delivery of liquid is stopped when a sheet of frozen liquid of desired thickness is established on the freezing zone, and the freezing step is continued to harden the sheet of frozen liquid. The freezing zone is heated to harvest the sheet of frozen liquid by thawing the bond between the freezing zone and the sheet initially at the periphery of the freezing zone and thereafter throughout the freezing zone. The harvested sheet of frozen liquid is gravity dropped from the freezing zone into a fragmenting zone where the sheet is broken into fragments.

  • Patent number: 4177649
Abstract: Surge in a compressor-driven system, such as a refrigeration system, is precluded by sensing an appropriate parameter, for example the gas flow at the compressor discharge outlet, and developing therefrom a feedback signal which dynamically varies the capacity of the compressor so that the discharge pressure versus discharge flow rate characteristic curve of the compressor always has a negative slope at the operating point, regardless of where that point is located on the curve. By providing a negative slope at all operating conditions, the system is incapable of surge. In order to satisfy variable load requirements, the compressor capacity is adjusted to vary the steady state operating point on the characteristic curve.

Abstract: Cryogenic cooling apparatus of the type including a generally tubular heat exchanger having a warm end and a cold end and affording two paths through one of which refrigerant gas flows from a supply under pressure to an expansion nozzle for producing cooling by means of the Joule Thomson effect in a liquefying chamber whence the low pressure gas returns through the other path to cool the incoming refrigerant, and a valve member cooperating with the nozzle to vary its effective area for automatically controlling the flow of refrigerant is characterized in that the valve is actuated by the expansion of an expander caused by the temperature of the expander itself, the expander being of elongate form and having an anchored end supported by the cold end of the heat exchanger but thermally insulated from it by a path of low thermal conductivity and extending away from the warm end of the heat exchanger to a free end which actuates the valve the expander having a warm end portion of high thermal conductivity extendi

  • Patent number: 4177651
Abstract: A Freon driven engine, drivably connected with the compressor of an air conditioner unit, utilizes normally wasted heat from the air conditioner condenser to supplement the heat supplied by a primary heat source thus reducing the quantity of energy normally required from the heat source to expand Freon and maintain operation of the engine. The evaporator of the air conditioner unit is utilized to reduce the temperature of the Freon exhausted by the engine before return to the heat source.

  • Patent number: 4177654
Abstract: A variable length transmission shaft for drive transmissions in various types of machinery includes a pair of parallel rotating or synchronous speed torque coupling joints and a connecting shaft carried between the coupling joints. Each of the coupling joints has inner and outer joint members which are slidable with respect to each other, and torque transmitting balls arranged between the inner and outer joint members for transmitting torque between the inner and outer joint members. The connecting shaft is formed of a pair of telescopically cooperating shaft members which are arranged for relative sliding movement with respect to each other. One of the shaft members is coupled to the inner joint member of one of the coupling joints and the other shaft member is coupled to the inner joint member of the other coupling joint. The overall length of the transmission shaft can be varied by effecting sliding movement of one of the shaft members with respect to the other shaft member.

The housing has a first set of aligned holes formed through the front and back walls, and a second set of aligned holes formed through the side walls. A lock actuator mechanism is journaled by the first set of holes and includes an actuator movable between locked and unlocked positions. A rotary latch bolt mechanism is journaled by the second set of holes and includes a latch bolt movable between latched and unlatched positions. The lock actuator mechanism includes a first spring which biases an actuator toward its locked position. The latch bolt mechanism includes a second spring which biases the latch bolt toward its unlatched position. The lock actuator mechanism includes a cam with is interengageable with the latch bolt to retain the latch bolt in its latched position until the lock actuator is moved to its unlocked position.
