  • Patent number: 4177658
Abstract: An annular groove (35) is located in an outer surface of an inner toroid (31), and is partly covered by an inner surface of an outer toroid (32). Alternatively, an annular groove (25) is located in an inner surface of an outer toroid (22), and is partly covered by an outer surface of an inner toroid (21). As the toroids are rotated together about different, intersecting axes, an elongated workpiece (W) is introduced into an open portion of the annular groove, advances into the closed portion of the annular groove, and is extruded through a die (48) upon again approaching the open portion of the annular groove, thereby forming an elongated product (P).

  • Patent number: 4177665
Abstract: A process and associated apparatus are provided for producing cold flow formed items from slugs. First and second dies are aligned for relative movement axially towards and away from one another. The dies have respective opposed first and second faces and the first face defines a cavity having portions including generally axial walls. The first die has a peripheral chamfer extending axially away from the first face and a sleeve is provided containing the dies to combine with outer parts of the second face and the peripheral chamfer to define an annular space. The slug is formed into the item by causing relative movement between the dies to impact the slug and then causing further relative movement so that the slug is caused to flow into contact with the axial walls and also into the annular space so that destructive forces applied to the axial walls are countered by forces applied to the chamfer thereby stabilizing the material of the first die between the axial walls and the chamfer.

  • Patent number: 4177667
Abstract: An apparatus and technique for changing the characteristics of a fluid mem in order to test static response of sensors within that medium. In particular, in testing the static response of a humidity sensor, a first sealed enclosure surrounds a humidity sensor and is retained within a second sealed enclosure. Both enclosures may be purged to have a predetermined relative humidity, one different from the other. The seal of the first chamber is then broken in such a manner that the fluid of the second enclosure subjects the sensor to a different relative humidity.

  • Patent number: 4177670
Abstract: The permeability of portions of or entire wrappers of successive filter cigarettes is tested with a gaseous fluid independently of the permeability of perforated portions of wrappers around the filter mouthpieces. Signals denoting the permeability of major portions of or entire wrappers are compared with a reference signal denoting the maximum permissible permeability, and the cigarettes having wrappers of excessive permeability are segregated from satisfactory cigarettes. Signals denoting the permeability of perforated wrapper portions are made visible to attendants or cause the generation or audible signals, for example, to facilitate proper adjustment of perforating instrumentalities if the permeability of perforated wrapper portions is too low.

  • Patent number: 4177673
Abstract: An anemometer includes a rotor assembly having front and rear bearings rotatably secured to axially spaced apart front and rear portions of a fixed rotor support shaft. Radially projecting rotor blades rotate with the bearings about the axis of the shaft in response to fluid flow directed against the blades substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft. The front bearing includes a first tapered bearing surface which tapers wider toward the rear of the shaft and bears directly against a corresponding second tapered bearing surface on the shaft. The second tapered bearing surface provides thrust and radial support upstream of the center of gravity (c.g.) and aerodynamic center of the rotor assembly for loads imposed on the rotor assembly by fluid flowing axially from front to rear along the axis of the shaft. This tends to minimize transverse motion of the rotor from bearing wear during use, resulting in accurate readings over an extended period of use of the instrument.

  • Patent number: 4177682
Abstract: A stand for supporting and rotating shafts in fractions of a revolution, for example for assembling armature slot conductors. Conventional arrangements use multiple rollers conforming to the shaft, one of which is motorized by way of gearing. This tends to be cumbersome, expensive and complex. According to this invention a shaft is supported on the walls of a channel between roller stops. A lever within the channel is jacked up to tilt the shaft against one roller and the lever is pushed longitudinally, allowing the shaft to remain in position but rolled around against the stop by an amount corresponding to the linear lever movement. The lever is then lowered and retracted.

Abstract: An indexing mechanism in which a workpiece to be machined by a tool is attachable to the end of a rotatable spindle that is driven by the reversible motor of a servomechanism to assume a desired angular position. Mounted on the spindle and rotatable therewith is one gear of a multiple-tooth face gear coupling pair, the second gear of which is axially advanced by a motor along the spindle into and out of meshing engagement with the first gear. The second gear is non-rotatable and acts, when in mesh with the first gear, to prevent rotation of the spindle and thereby lock the angular position of the workpiece.

Abstract: A portable apparatus useable with a rod file to sharpen the teeth of a chain saw. The apparatus has a base that clamps onto the blade of the saw. A chain holding finger mounted on a support carried by the base fixes the position of the tooth to be sharpened and aligns the rod file with the cutting edge of this tooth. An angled groove in the base serves as a guide and support for a slide attached to the file so that the file sharpens the tooth at a fixed angle and elevation.

  • Patent number: 4177701
Abstract: The subject invention relates to an improved steady rest for use in a portable heavy-duty apparatus for machining large rotary work pieces. The apparatus includes a heavy-duty portable base and a cutting assembly for cutting the large rotary work pieces. The steady rest includes a pedestal releasably secured to the base. A jaw support is mounted on the pedestal. A pair of C-shaped movable jaws is mounted on the jaw support positionable in a selected attitude for receiving the rotary work pieces. A bridge connects the upper ends of the jaws to form a complete circle around a portion of the large rotary work piece. A roller is mounted on each of the jaws for rotatably supporting the rotary work piece. A brake is mounted on the jaws for releasably holding the rotary work piece.

  • Patent number: 4177705
Abstract: Disclosed is an electronic musical instrument resembling a guitar that is played like a guitar and sounds like a guitar; however, it is stringless and has a plurality of flexible actuator blade type members which are mounted on edge and are adapted to be strummed or picked. Flexing of each actuator blade in either direction closes one or more leaf type switches which controls the amplified output of an electronic oscillator whose fundamental operating frequency is further varied in accordance with finger actuation of a plurality of fret-board switches. Although the invention in its preferred embodiment is directed to a guitar-like instrument, it is also applicable to other types and classes of musical string instruments such as a violin.

  • Patent number: 4177706
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a digitalized music synthesizer functioning in the real time domain to continuously update, in an asynchronous manner, a continuing approximation of a desired waveform by utilizing its memory of the recent history of the operation of the keyboard of the apparatus. A real time clock and a microcomputer are both driven by a single crystal oscillator, operating at any arbitrary frequency that need not correspond with the frequency of the fundamental or harmonic waves to be produced by the apparatus. A memory of the recent history of keyboard events is maintained. The microcomputer utilizes an algorithm employing square waves as a basis and a differential correcting technique which minimizes the quantity of square wave defining terms that need be computed by only recomputing at each time, corrections to the previous computation.

  • Patent number: 4177707
Abstract: A polyphonic electronic music synthesizer reproduces in real time complex sounds representative of musical instruments and other musical and non-musical sounds from an above-audio frequency signal. The synthesizer includes a sampling circuit for repetitively sampling the high frequency signal to thereby provide a series of samples, successive ones of the samples being produced by sampling the relatively high frequency signal at a rate of approximately once per cycle at instantaneous points in the cycle which are progressively displaced from the previously sampled points. A storage mechanism sequentially stores the samples, and a mechanism is provided for sequentially recombining each of the sample in real time to thereby produce the selected waveform at the desired audio frequency. Preferably, the sampling circuit is implemented digitally.
