  • Patent number: 4694699
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing a magnified image of a zone of a specimen. The method comprises the steps of generating acoustic waves having different frequencies and focussing on the zone the acoustic waves wherein different points on the zone receive and reflect acoustic waves having different frequencies, the frequency of a wave received by a given point being function of the position of the point in the zone. The method further comprises the steps of analyzing the reflected waves to generate signals representative of the physical structure of the zone at the points and establishing a correspondance between the signals and the positions of the points in the zone from the frequencies of the reflected waves and, forming from the signals a magnified representation on a display of the physical structure of the zone to construct an image of the zone.

  • Patent number: 4694717
Abstract: A machine for cutting coarse sod into relatively small plugs for ready packaging and subsequent transplanting, comprising an endless conveyor belt upon which comparatively large rectangular sections of sod can be deposited, so that the sections of sod can be moved intermittently toward a sod cutting device. The sod cutting device preferably is of the single pass cutter type, utilizing a plurality of elongate, closely grouped blades designed to periodically move in unison downwardly into contact with sod to be cut, with such downward cutting movements being immediately followed by an upward movement, thus to permit an advance of the section of sod without interference. I coordinate the movements of the sod cutting device with the belt advance, such that forward movement of a section of sod is in each instance prevented until the cutting blades are clear of the section of sod being cut.

  • Patent number: 4694725
Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing the volume level of a tone generator associated with a keyboard in which the tone generator will output a click tone when each key on the keyboard is actuated. In establishing the volume level of a click tone, the keyboard is put into a volume setting mode by the actuation of two key members of the keyboard. The subsequent actuation of each key member will produce a different volume level of the click tone. The actuating of a key member results in the storing of a count in a storage member. The storage member is then downcounted until it reaches zero. Upon reaching the count of zero, processing means generates a pulse train in which the pulse width is determined by the time it takes for the storage member to count down to zero.

Abstract: A load responsive system including individual positive and negative load compensators, for control of positive or negative load and an external logic system for determination of whether the controlled load pressure is positive or negative. The deactivating valve deactivates the positive load compensator, when the negative load pressure exceeds a certain minimum predetermined level, preventing flow of fluid from the system pump to the system actuator controlling a negative load at a pressure higher than a certain predetermined level, and therefore preventing development of excessive pressure in the actuator, while also deactivating the negative load compensator below a certain minimum predetermined negative load pressure level and while the positive load is being controlled by the positive load compensator.

  • Patent number: 4694732
Abstract: In a first embodiment, the assembly includes a shallow, substantially figure eight-shaped chamber of intersecting bores with a pair of rotors journalled therein. The chamber has upper and lower, parallel walls which are joined together by means of a peripheral, chamber-enclosing wall. The lower wall has an aperture therein for opening onto a cylinder of an air compressor, or the like, and the rotors sealingly interface the parallel and peripheral walls. By rotating the rotors toward or away from the aperture, a substantial volume of the chamber is closed off from, or opened to, the aperture. Thus, by mounting the Assembly onto a cylinder, with the aperture opening thereinto, the Assembly can be used to alter the effective volume of the cylinder without significantly adding dimension to the cylinder length or diameter.

  • Patent number: 4694734
Abstract: A slide type vacuum pump has a cylinder bore with a cylindrical piston reciprocatingly slidably fitted therein and defining a vacuum pumping chamber. A seal element is housed in an annular groove around the piston defined by a radially extending annular surface and an axially extending cylindrical surface. The seal element includes an inwardly radially extending annular portion axially abutted against the annular groove defining surface and an axially extending cylindrical portion slidingly sealing against the cylinder bore. A first spring member has an inwardly radially extending annular portion axially abuttingly holding the annular seal element portion against the annular groove defining surface, and several axially extending resilient finger portions each angled outwards somewhat and springingly pressing the cylindrical seal element portion radially outwards against the cylinder bore to effect sealing therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4694741
Abstract: In an apparatus for making a rolled wafer cone from a baked flat wafer blank made from a sugar-containing wafer dough, the baked wafer blank is rolled to form a wafer cone in a winding mold while the wafer blank is still in a soft, deformable state after the baking operation. Thereafter the rolled wafer cone is permitted to harden. In order to ensure the production of wafer cones having consistently exactly the same shape, it is proposed that the wafer cone which is unrestrained at least in part is shortened in the winding mold to a predetermined length while the wafer cone is adapted to be plastically deformed. For this purpose the rolled wafer cone disposed in the winding mold is subjected to a plastic deformation only at one end or only at both ends.
