  • Patent number: 5065458
Abstract: The appearance modifying garments include appearance enhancing color differences creating a new type of garment which promotes an improved appearance of the wearer through the formation of apparent marginal edges on the garment itself. The apparent marginal edges provide the outline of a shapely appearance and are formed by darkening areas of the garments so that they appear smaller or less noticeable to the eye when the garment is worn. The shapely portion stands out and the darker shaded portions are less noticeable and there is a distinct demarcation between the light area and the dark area so that the viewer's eye is drawn to the shapely portion of the garment.

  • Patent number: 5065472
Abstract: A brake assembly for impeding the longitudinal travel of a moving object. The brake asembly provides for a biasing mechanism which biases an engagement block into the line of travel of the moving object. When the moving object contacts the block, movement is impeded until the object is subjected to a force capable of deflecting the block counter to the biasing member and out of the line of travel of the object. The object can thereafter move past the said brake assembly and continuing along its line of travel. In particular, the brake assembly is used to impede the longitudinal travel of a reciprocating sootblower until the cleaning nozzles of the sootblower have had their position indexed relative to a previous cleaning cycle.

  • Patent number: 5065481
Abstract: The shank of the clamping device is connected to the actuating element via a freewheel and is supported on the cover via a counteracting further freewheel. Located on the shank fixedly in the terms of rotation and displacement is the first coupling part which interacts with a second coupling part mounted at a fixed location. The latter is connected to the winding-up element for the clamping cables via a bevel gear. Formed on the actuating element is a slot-shaped groove which slides along the fixed guide pin during the pivoting of the actuating element. For tensioning the clamping cables, the actuating element is pivoted in such a way that the groove part is located at the guide pine. The shank is thereby lifted into the upper clamping position and the coupling is closed. During the pivoting of the actuating element to and fro, the clamping cables are wound onto the winding-up element.

  • Patent number: 5065483
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head and a method for making the thin film head by the use of electrical lapping guides includes the use of a resistive lapping guide that has a height dimension and an electrical resistance that optimizes the results of the comparison of the resistive lapping guide to a finished lapping guide. The resistive lapping guide is not lapped during the lapping process. The finished lapping guide is lapped and the resistive comparison between the two determines the stopping of the lapping process. An as-lapped guide which is of the same dimensions as the finished lapping guide after lapping can also be included. An interleaved magnetic head having alternating magneto-resistive read elements and inductive write elements can be precisely lapped by sensing the resistance of the lapping guide elements and using a formula to determine the final resistance of the finished lapping guide to halt the lapping process.

  • Patent number: 5065486
Abstract: A robot-held tool for applying a sealing strip to a flange comprises rollers which are contra-rotated by a motor within a housing and which engage opposite sides of the sealing strip to press it onto the flange, downward pressure onto the sealing strip being maintained by a non-driven roller. The housing is carried by a frame which is in turn connected to the robot via a coupling. The frame is freely angularly movable relative to a shaft which supports the housing. When the rollers are energized, they pull the tool along the flange. When a curve in the flange is reached, the housing and its supporting shaft automatically swivel relative to the remainder of the frame and to the robot. The robot then thereafter re-positions the frame back into the previous position which it had relative to the housing. In this way, the majority of the guiding of the tool along the flange is carried out by the tool itself and programming and adjustment of the robot are simplified. A hand-operated version is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5065491
Abstract: A method of producing curved slide fastener chains or a curved slide fasteners is disclosed. Fastener elements are planted along respective one side edges of a pair of fastener tapes, at least one of which tapes is made of solvent-swelling fibers. The fastener elements planted on the respective tapes are inter-engaged with each other to form a fastener chain. A solvent or its aqueous solution, or a solution containing a solvent and dissolving a soluble adhesive, is applied onto either one of the fastener tapes made of solvent-swelling fibers. Subsequently, the fastener chain is shaped into a desired curved configuration. The shaped fastener chain has its curved configuration fixed by being served on a texture, by solidification of the adhesive dissolved in the solvent after evaporation of the solvent or by applying an adhesive onto the shaped fastener chain and solidifying the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5065494
Abstract: A method for automatically tightening a tapped member such as a nut is disclosed. A socket of an open end air wrench mounted on a nut tightening robot is coupled with the tapped member. The robot rotates the socket in a first direction, i.e., a tightening direction, to a first relatively small torque, and subsequently rotates the socket in a second direction opposite to the first direction to a predetermined position, i.e., a central receptive position after the socket being disengaged from the tapped member. A rotary encoder is provided to generate pulses in response to the rotation of the socket in the second rotational direction. An angle of rotation of this rotation of the socket in the second direction is detected by counting the number of pulses generated by the encoder. In response to the detected angle of rotation a torque wrench is coupled with the tapped member and the robot rotates the torque wrench in the tightening direction to a second relatively great torque.

  • Patent number: 5065496
Abstract: An automated facility for the large-scale production of superconducting magnets for use in a particle accelerator. Components of the automated facility include: a superconducting coil winding machine; a coil form and cure press apparatus; a coil collaring press; collar pack assembly apparatus; yoke half stacking apparatus; a cold mass assembly station; and a final assembly station. The facility can produce, on an economical manufacturing basis magnets made of superconducting material for use in the ring of the particle accelerator. Each of the components is under the control of a programmable controller for operation having repeatable accuracy. All of the elements which are combined to form the superconducting magnet are thus manufactured with the dimensional precision required to produce a known, uniform magnetic field within the accelerator.

  • Patent number: 5065501
Abstract: A self-regulating heater includes an electrically-conductive substrate (11), having a magnetic surface layer (13) of one skin depth, folded 180 degrees to define two heater sections joined by a fold section. The magnetic material has a considerably higher resistance than the substrate material. The surface of the two sections clad with the surface layer are in closely spaced parallel relation and connected in series by the fold section (23) such that a constant amplitude alternating energizing current flows in opposite directions through the two sections at any instant of time to thereby establish an electric field between the two heaters. The field concentrates current flow at the two facing surfaces. Depth of the current is determined by the skin effect phenomenon and increases significantly at temperatures above the Curie temperature of the magnetic material.
