Abstract: A method and apparatus for sustaining chaos in a system by using the natural dynamics of the system to redirect flow towards a chaotic region along unstable manifolds of basin boundary saddles by utilizing small, infrequent parameter perturbations. The perturbations are determined based on the location of an unstable state, which is used as a control reference. The location of the unstable state, which is unobservable, is estimated by calculating a theoretical branch connecting the current state of the system to the target unstable state.

Abstract: A secondary, lithium-ion electrochemical cell having improved properties and a method for providing a secondary, lithium-ion electrochemical cell having the same. Specifically, the invention relates to a method for reducing and/or preventing the exfoliation of the graphitic carbonaceous electrode of a lithium-ion cell, wherein the exfoliation is caused by the intercalation of electrolyte solvent along with lithium ion into the graphitic carbonaceous electrode. This method is accomplished by adding one or more chelating polyamines to the electrolyte solution of the lithium-ion cell. The novel method and the improved lithium-ion cell are claimed herein.

Abstract: A pressure-sensitive tape is provided having a polyolefin backing, a primer comprising an elastomeric block copolymer which primer is applied from a non-aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, said tape further comprising an adhesive on the thus primed surface. Because the primer is laid down from a solution in a non-aromatic hydrocarbon solvent such as methyl cyclohexane the process utilizes an environmentally-friendly solvent.

Abstract: Oxadiazines of formula I, wherein R1 is F, Cl or fluoroalkoxy and R2 is alkyl, are prepared by reacting hydrazine derivatives of formula II with a dialkoxymethane in the presence of a protic acid catalyst in an inert solvent under conditions which allow for the prompt removal of the alcohol by-product by distillation.
The reaction can be combined with the preparation of the hydrazines derivatives II from the corresponding ketones and hydrazines NH2-NHR3 in the presence of the same protic acid catalyst and an inert solvent. Oxadiazines I are useful as intermediates in the preparation of arthropodicidal agents.
Abstract: It has now been found that certain novel benzofuranyl derived uracils have provided unexpected pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicidal efficacy. These compounds are represented by formula I
Preferred are those of formula I where R is fluoroalkyl, carboxyalkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, alkoxycarbonylhaloalkyl, alkenoxycarbonylalkyl, or mono- or dialkylaminocarbonylalkyl; X is halogen; Y is hydrogen or halogen; and, Z is methyl or amino. Novel intermediates to the compounds of formula I are also disclosed.
Abstract: An improved process for making disposable diapers, and the like, having hook-and-loop fastening systems, and disposable diapers made by the improved process. The loop structure of the hook-and-loop fastening system used in this invention is substantially free of article attachment adhesive and comprises loop elements affixed to a support structure. The loop elements are deformed when the loop structure is wound onto a parent roll. At least a portion of the deformed loop elements are restored to essentially their original, undeformed, state after the loop structure is unwoundfrom the parent roll. The restoration is accomplished by contacting the loop elements with a mechanical restoration device which comprises either a brush or a scarfing surface. The brush preferably has a plurality of bristles having an average free length greater than about three times the average undeformed height of the loop elements and an average bending modulus less than the average modulus of elasticity of the loop elements.

Abstract: An optical connector (20) includes a ferrule assembly (22) which is adapted to be received in a plug frame (70). The ferrule assembly is held in the plug frame by a cable retention assembly (40) which is adapted to be secured to said plug frame. A leading end of the plug frame is symmetrical in an end cross-section which is normal to a longitudinal axis of the connector. After the ferrule assembly has been assembled to the plug frame, the direction of any eccentricity of the plug passageway or of an optical fiber terminated by the ferrule assembly is determined. Then the plug frame is assembled to a housing of a grip (90) such that the direction of eccentricity is aligned with a key (92) of the grip. The plug frame is capable of being assembled to the grip notwithstanding the rotational orientation of the plug frame with respect to the grip.

Abstract: A backpack vacuum cleaner comprising a housing with a compartment for a filter bag, a connection branch for a suction hose, a hip strap to be applied around the hips of the bearer and a pair of shoulder straps. In order to only limit as little as possible the freedom of movement of the bearer with respect to the upper part of his body and arms when using the vacuum cleaner, and at the same time to provide a vacuum cleaner with a comparatively big filter bag and a subsequent big cleaning capacity, the housing is divided in two, the two parts being connected with a flexible connection allowing a tilting movement between the two parts, the hip strap being fastened to the lower part and the shoulder straps being mutually interconnected with an equalizing device for equalizing differences in tension between the two straps.

Abstract: A method of driving a surface discharge plasma display panel has a reset step of applying a pulse of a first voltage to paired first and second electrodes, a write step of applying a pulse of a second voltage to second and third electrodes corresponding to cells to be turned ON, and a sustain discharge step of applying an AC pulse of a fourth voltage to the paired first and second electrodes. The pulse of the first voltage is so set that it is higher than a first discharge start voltage, a third voltage caused by the discharge is higher than the first discharge start voltage, and the first, second, and third electrodes have the same potential after the application of the pulse of the first voltage. Therefore, an address discharge of the surface discharge plasma display panel can be caused by a wide range of voltages, and display quality of the panel can be improved.

Abstract: Bichromal balls have two hemispheres, typically one black and one white, each having different electrical properties. Each ball is enclosed within a spherical shell and then a space between the ball and shell is filled with a liquid to form a microsphere so that the ball is free to rotate in response to an electrical field. The microspheres can then be mixed into a substrate which can be formed into sheets or can be applied to any kind of surface. The result is a film which can form an image from an applied electrical field.
