Abstract: A hydraulic control system for controlling the orientation of a material handling unit on a lift boom. The control system includes a flow divider/combiner valve operative in a boom-raise, unit-leveling mode to pass a portion of the fluid displaced from the rod end of the boom cylinder to the base end of the unit cylinder, and operative in a boom-lower, unit-leveling mode, to combine the fluid stream displaced from the base end unit cylinder in a preset ratio with pressurized fluid, and pass the combined stream to the rod end of the boom cylinder. A modulating valve controls flow to and from the base end of the boom cylinder and is pilot actuated to inhibit descent of the boom until the pressure in the unit cylinder reaches a level at which the unit cylinder initiates levelling of the unit.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining a desired nip pressure distribution profile in the cross direction of a paper web. The paper web passes through a nip, the latter defined by at least one elastomer covered roll, the covered roll having polarizable particles or magnetic particles embedded therein. A plurality of spaced plates or spaced coils each generate a local field (respectively electric or magnetic) which acts upon individual spaced zones or regions along the covered roll. The field may thus be an electric field or a magnetic filed. The effect of the field is to change the effective modulus of the elastomer by acting on the particles. In turn, this action varies the nip pressure pulse as to exert a desired pressure at each of a plurality of spaced zones or regions on the paper web, to thus create or process a more uniform product in the nip. The method and apparatus can be used, for example, to improve web moisture profiles in the press section of paper machines.

Abstract: In a first embodiment the combination boat dry dock and boat launching apparatus includes two planar dock sections pivotally connected to each other. The dock sections include cradle straps for supporting the hull of a boat with the longitudinal axis of the boat in substantial parallel relationship with the pivot axis of the dock sections. Each dock section is supported by two pontoons attached at proximal and distal portions of the dock sections. The two pontoons at respective proximal portions of the dock sections may be flooded with water to allow the proximal portions of the dock sections to descend below water level for launching of a boat. Air is introduced into these two pontoons for expelling water and thereby raising the dock sections above the water level. In a second embodiment, a constant buoyancy pontoon is mounted to each dock section intermediate the other pontoons. A pump and conduits transfer water between the proximal and distal pontoons of each dock section.

Abstract: An improved air-intake system and engine layout for use on a small watercraft provides for a lower temperature, vapor fuel/air charge with less water vapor content. The watercraft includes an engine-air intake system incorporating an air-intake box which inhibits the engine from intaking water present in the engine compartment, especially during high speed maneuvering. An extended flywheel case is also provided that prevents water located in the engine compartment from being sprayed by moving parts directly into the air-intake box. Furthermore, the improved air-intake system of the present invention incorporates external air-intake valves that prevent water from entering the engine and propulsion compartments through the air intakes while the watercraft is in an inverted.

Abstract: A boat featuring an autopilot-based steering and maneuvering system. The steering system uses a specially integrated autopilot that remains engaged unless the operator is actively commanding the boat to change course. For example, in a boat in which steering is performed using a joystick, course changes can be effected simply by moving (e.g., twisting) the joystick. That movement automatically disengages the autopilot, allowing the operator to achieve the course change. When the operator has completed the course change and released the joystick, a centering spring returns it to a neutral position and the autopilot automatically reengages. In the improved maneuvering system, the autopilot is used for controlling the direction of a waterjet boat during very low speed (e.g., less than 4 knots) maneuvers, such as docking. The autopilot controls the steering system, e.g.

Abstract: A hollow plastic body, particularly a plastic ball, has antistatic properties and a melting temperature above that found in floating covers of petrochemical storage tanks, therefore, enabling use of the body in flotation of oil tank covers without danger of melting and without danger of developing a static charge followed by subsequent hazardous discharge. The balls are constructed of a non-foamed high-density plastic resin, HDPE (high density polyethylene), mixed with an antistatic additive or agent. The antistatic agent is effective to convert the electrically insulating plastic to an electrically conductive material which does not develop a static electrical charge. Only a relatively small amount of the antistatic agent, less than one percent by weight, is sufficient to provide the desired antistatic property to ball while having no more than a minimal effect on the melting temperature, thereby to retain the integrity of the flotation in the presence of the elevated temperature.

Silicon, carbon and a SiC seed crystal are introduced into a growing chamber.
