Abstract: An electrostatic spray device that maintains a consistent charge-to-mass ratio in order to maintain a consistent target spray quality is disclosed. During steady state conditions, the high voltage power supply adjusts the output voltage level in response to changing environmental and/or operating conditions. During transient conditions such as start-up, shut-down and changing flow rate conditions, the high voltage power supply ensures that the charge-to-mass ratio is maintained. During, start-up, for example, the high voltage power supply charges the high voltage electrode to a predetermined voltage level before the product is delivered to the charging location. During shut-down, the product delivery is stopped before the high voltage power supply shuts off power to the high voltage electrode, and during changes in product flow rate, the voltage level of the high voltage electrode is adjusted to maintain a consistent charge-to-mass ratio.

Abstract: The present invention includes systems and methods for monitoring the spooling area of a rotatable reel for winding or unwinding an elongated material, for example, a cable. The monitoring system has a detector for sensing the presence and position of a cable surface or object or operator positioned between the detector and the reel. The detector can control rotation of the reel directly, or send a position signal to a computer where the position signal indicates the detected presence and/or position. The computer can have a memory and/or a processor for respectively storing and analyzing the position signal. The computer is operative to compare the position signal to previously received position signals to determine a condition, for example, the amount of cable on the reel, the presence of any object, and/or the existence of a safety-threatening condition. The computer can generate an output signal for use in, for example, controlling the reel speed and/or torque, or the application of brakes.

Abstract: A method for detecting and compensating inclination of an objective lens includes the steps of: initially driving an optical disk and detecting a record signal while travelling on the track of the optical disk; checking whether a GFS signal according to the rotation of the optical disk is normally detected; checking a center error signal value outputted from the optical pick-up which reads a record data on the optical disk in case that the GFS signal is abnormally detected; and discriminating inclination of the objective lens on the basis of the checked center error signal value, thereby judging inclination of the objective lens quickly and accurately. Parameters related to the chemicals being used for surface treatments are measured in real time and on-line, and these measured parameters are used to control the dosage of chemicals into the surface treatment system. The information is also used to control downhole devices that may be a packer, choke, sliding sleeve, perforating device, flow control valve, completion device, an anchor or any other device. Provision is also made for control of secondary recovery operations online using the downhole sensors to monitor the reservoir conditions. Abstract: A pair of optical sensors are disposed above photopolymer plates and interleaf papers, which are alternately stacked with one another. These optical sensors basically have the same structure. However, the optical sensor is disposed so as to be inclined to an optical axis of reflected light, and therefore, a detection level of the optical sensor substantially becomes low. Accordingly, although the optical sensors each react to the reflected light from the photopolymer plate, the optical sensor does not react to the reflected light from the interleaf paper. As a result, it is determined whether the uppermost layer of the stack is the photopolymer plate or the interleaf paper. Abstract: An apparatus and method for remotely venting or opening a container sealed by a bung. The apparatus comprises a support structure, a means for attachment to the container by a strap, a bung wrench, and means for aligning and rotatably supporting the bung wrench. The alignment means allows the bung wrench to accommodate any deformation of the container face. The bung wrench can include a ratchet for multiple turns of the bung. An extension arm is connected to the bung wrench, and a cable is attachable to the end of the extension arm. The cable is attached to the extension arm, and extended away from the container in a direction whereby pulling the cable sufficient to move the extension arm will produce the desired rotation of the bung, thereby venting the container.

Abstract: A device for controlling a motor-driven hoist, includes a housing and a control unit supplied with electric energy from a power source and secured to the housing. The control unit has control elements operable from outside the housing between an inactive ready position and an active position for delivering control signals. A transmitter is supplied with electric energy from the power source and receives the control signals from the control unit for wireless transmission of the control signals to a receiver, which is operatively connected to a power controller of the drive of a motor-driven hoist. An activation switch is so operatively connected to the power source that actuation of a control element initiates a supply of electric energy from the power source, whereas the supply of electric energy from the power source is cut, when the control elements occupy their ready position.

Abstract: A solid-state quantum computing structure includes a d-wave superconductor in sets of islands that clean Josephson junctions separate from a first superconducting bank. The d-wave superconductor causes the ground state for the supercurrent at each junction to be doubly degenerate, with two supercurrent ground states having distinct magnetic moments. These quantum states of the supercurrents at the junctions create qubits for quantum computing. The quantum states can be uniformly initialized from the bank, and the crystal orientations of the islands relative to the bank influence the initial quantum state and tunneling probabilities between the ground states. A second bank, which a Josephson junction separates from the first bank, can be coupled to the islands through single electron transistors for selectably initializing one or more of the supercurrents in a different quantum state. Single electron transistors can also be used between the islands to control entanglements while the quantum states evolve.

Abstract: The extraction efficiency of a light emitting device can be improved by making the absorbing device layers as thin as possible. The internal quantum efficiency decreases as the device layers become thinner. An optimal active layer thickness balances both effects. An AlGaInP LED includes a substrate and device layers including an AlGaInP lower confining layer of a first conductivity type, an AlGaInP active region of a second conductivity type, and an AlGaInP upper confining layer of a second conductivity type. The absorbance of the active region is at least one fifth of the total absorbance in the light-emitting device. The device optionally includes at least one set-back layers of AlGaInP interposing one of confining layer and active region. The p-type upper confining layer may be doped with oxygen improve the reliability.
