A pre-stressed structure is formed as part of the plurality of thin film layers on the edge of the slider. The pre-stressed structure has a level of material stress. The recession is measured relative to a bearing surface of the slider, and then the level of material stress is adjusted as a function of the measured to effect a corresponding change in the recession.

The main pole forming method includes etching an exposed side face of a main pole layer, and the plated foundation film, thereby defining a recording track width. Abstract: A monolithic, multi-layer heating element (26, 126, 226) forms the high temperature tip (22, 122, 222) of a glow plug assembly (20). The heating element (26, 126, 226) includes a conductive core (48, 148, 248) which is surrounded by an insulator layer (50, 150, 250), which in turn supports a resistive layer (52, 152, 252). An optional conductive jacket (172) can surround the resistive layer (152). These layered components are pre-formed in prior operations and then assembled one into the other to form a precursor structure. The precursor structure is transferred to a die (54, 64, 164), where it is compressed to form a so-called green part having dimensional attributes proportional to the finished heating element (26, 126, 256). The individual layers remain substantially intact, with some boundary layer mixing possible to enhance material-to-material bonding. The green part is sintered to bond to various materials together into an essentially solid mass.

The method includes positioning the serviced turbine part in a vacuum furnace configured to limit surface oxidation. The serviced turbine part is controllably heated to prevent distortion. A surface damage layer is recrystallized into a fine grain structure to prevent fatigue crack initiation. The serviced turbine part is controllably cooled to prevent distortion.

Abstract: A method for casting monitored pilings and a pour diverter used in connection with the method is provided. The method includes positioning a plurality of pile strands in a form, and then connecting a suspension assembly having at least one sensor to at least one of the pile strands so that the at least one sensor is located in a piling core area. A pour diverter, having a generally V-shaped configuration, is positioned over the suspension assembly. Concrete is poured into the form over the pour diverter so that a flow of the concrete into the form is split and flows down on either side of the suspension assembly until the at least one sensor is covered. The pour diverter is then removed to finish the casting. Preferably, provisions are provided on the pour diverter for holding or covering an antenna assembly during the pour, prior to it being placed into the concrete forming the piling.
