Abstract: Methods and apparatus for treatment of medical disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and congestive heart failure are disclosed. A method involves delivering pressurized air, oxygen or other breathing gas to a patient during a respiratory cycle, where pressure of the air is decreased according to an expiratory unloading factor during expiration. The timing and magnitude of the pressure change may be fully automated and responsive to feedback from a motor load sensor, optionally in combination with a pressure sensor.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for removing volatile anesthetics from an anesthesia or ventilation system to minimize the effects of malignant hyperthermia in susceptible patients. According to one aspect of the present invention, a system for removing volatile anesthetics is provided. A first filter component placed in fluid communication with an inspiratory limb of an anesthesia or ventilation system such that volatile anesthetics will pass through the first filter component during operation of the anesthesia or ventilation system. A second filter component is operably coupled to the expiration port of the anesthesia or ventilation system such that gases passing through the expiratory limb of the anesthesia or ventilation system pass through the second filter component. The first filter component and second filter component are adapted to effectively remove volatile anesthetics passing through the respective filters.

Abstract: This document provides devices and systems for monitoring the flow of breathing-gases through a gas delivery cannula. For example, in one aspect, this document provides a light, such as an LED, which is illuminated to indicate gas flow. The LED can be powered by an inline turbine or paddlewheel that is configured to harvest kinetic power from the gas and transform that kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a mask for achieving positive pressure mechanical ventilation (inclusive of CPAP, ventilator support, critical care ventilation, emergency applications), and a method for a operating a ventilation system including such mask. The mask of the present invention includes a piloted exhalation valve that is used to achieve the target pressures/flows to the patient. The pilot for the valve may be pneumatic and driven from the gas supply tubing from the ventilator. The pilot may also be a preset pressure derived in the mask, a separate pneumatic line from the ventilator, or an electro-mechanical control. The mask of the present invention may further include a heat and moisture exchanger (HME) which is integrated therein.

Abstract: This invention relates to respirator, a half face mask with the shape of a concave-rectangular cup that fits the facial features comfortably. The mask covers user's mouth and nostrils to provide a breathing chamber and has three opening ports, one on the bottom receiving the filter cartridge and two of the same dimension on the sides receiving the exhalation tubes. The three components are grooved-fitting embedded into the mask and have one-way air flow functionality controlled by the mean of flapper valve mechanism. The filter cartridge contains layers of mesh and chemical compounds to filter dust particles, destroy carbon monoxide and absorb other toxic gases. The present invention offers a respirator having the functionality of a gas mask but aesthetic-simplicity shape of a half face mask which commuters can conveniently wear in polluted metropolitan or hazardous atmosphere to prevent dust particles and toxic gases go into wearer's lung.

Abstract: A vaporizer and method of vaporizing a botanical material is described. Embodiments of the apparatus include a self-contained, fully enclosed, battery operated vaporizer having an air inlet and a mouthpiece. The vaporizer includes a window for viewing a botanical material contained therein and a heating element that is also visible through the window and through an air inlet. The vaporizer also includes a push-button switch that rapidly provides power to heat air, which is then drawn through the botanical material by inhaling. Embodiments of the method include utilizing a push-button switch for heating vaporizer air and viewing the glow of the heating element as a signal that the vaporizer is ready for use.

Abstract: An alkaloid composition for an e-cigarette contains a solvent and at least about 25 wt. % anatabine based on the total alkaloid weight of the composition. The alkaloid composition may be contained in a refilling cartridge for an e-cigarette, or in a container as part of a kit for refilling an e-cigarette. The alkaloid compositions disclosed herein feature a balanced form of alkaloids to provide an attractive alternative to smoking tobacco, in which nicotine makes up about 90 wt. % of the total alkaloid content. The alkaloid compositions are characterized by a significant quantity of anatabine, which has lower toxicity than other alkaloids such as nicotine. The alkaloid compositions enable individuals to experience the pleasure-enhancing attributes of conventional cigarette smoking, while avoiding exposure to combusted materials and other potentially hazardous components present in tobacco.
