Abstract: A stay-in-place concrete form includes masonry shells layered with lightweight concrete and rigid insulation tied with plastic ladders. The masonry shells can be capped with plastic shims that compensate for the variation in height of the shells. This allows for the shells, together with the shims, to be a consistent height and allows for dry stacking. The masonry shells are bonded together with a layer of lightweight concrete poured in a cavity behind the masonry shells instead of being bonded together by mortar joints. This dry stacking method can result in labor time and training savings over conventional masonry mortar construction.

Abstract: A connector strip is mechanically pressed into a slot formed in a concrete wall. The connector strip has a distal end with resilient, deformable legs that engage the walls of the slot—when the strip is pressed into the slot the legs deform from a resting position and press against the walls of the slot, preventing the strip from being pulled out of engagement in the slot. The proximal end of the connector strip is defined by transverse retaining arms that retain insulation board against the concrete, and which serve as a surface into which siding and sheetrock may be anchored with nails or screws.

Abstract: An elongated generally rectangular ceiling plank formed of wood or plastic composition and has opposite elongated side edges with a length that is between nine and ten times the width of the opposite end edges. The ceiling plank includes complementary tongue and groove engagement portions formed at the sides and ends for side-by-side or end-to-end engagement with other similar planks. In a ceiling plank installation a ceiling plank securement clip secures the side groove portion of one plank to a ceiling. The secured plank can be joined to another plank in side-by-side or end-to-end engagement at a ceiling by interengagement with the tongue portion at the side or end of the other plank. The ceiling plank is approximately forty-eight inches long and five inches wide and can thus be easily handled and installed by one person.

Abstract: The induced macro-cell corrosion prevention method includes the step of replacing a corroded or chloride-contaminated section of a steel reinforcement or rebar in steel-reinforced concrete with a new rebar section free of chloride. A non-conductive insulating buffer is placed between the end sections of the new rebar and the corresponding end sections of adjacent chloride-contaminated rebar sections in order to form a non-conductive layer between the new steel and the old steel. This prevents or substantially reduces formation of a macro-cell that would cause a galvanic reaction to occur and increase corrosion potential.

Abstract: A mounting mat (16) comprising at least one inorganic layer (18) comprising inorganic materials suitable for mounting a pollution control element in a pollution control device. A friction—inducing material (20) is disposed on at least one side of the inorganic layer (18). The deposited friction—inducing material (20) defines a higher friction area exhibiting a static coefficient of friction higher than that of the inorganic materials. A lower friction layer (20) is disposed so as to cover at least a portion of the higher friction area and define an exposed surface area of the mounting mat (16). The exposed surface area exhibits a lower static coefficient of friction than that of the higher friction area. The lower friction layer (20) no longer covers a substantial portion of the higher friction area, after the mounting mat (16) mounts a pollution control element (14) in a pollution control device (10).

Abstract: Embodiments for routing exhaust in an engine are provided. In one example, an engine method comprises, during a first condition, firing a subset of cylinders and routing all exhaust from the subset of cylinders through a first exhaust manifold coupled directly to a catalyst and not a turbocharger, and during a second condition, firing all cylinders, routing a first portion of exhaust through a second exhaust manifold coupled to the turbocharger, and routing a second portion of exhaust through the first exhaust manifold. In this way, exhaust can be directly routed to a catalyst under some conditions.

Abstract: A method for monitoring the function of an exhaust-gas sensor in the exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine. A first function control of the exhaust-gas sensor takes place in a first operating point of the internal combustion engine, and in the case of an intact exhaust-gas sensor, the output signal of the exhaust gas sensor or a characteristic quantity derived therefrom is determined in at least one second operating point of the internal combustion engine in the case of an intact exhaust-gas sensor and stored as learned value, and the monitoring of the function of the exhaust-gas sensor during a subsequent operation of the internal combustion engine in the second operating point takes place by comparing the output signal of the exhaust-gas sensor or the characteristic quantity derived therefrom, with the learned value. A corresponding device for implementing the method is also described.

Abstract: A catalytic apparatus for efficient pre-combustion refinement of fossil fuel in vehicular engines, including an elongated outer metal pipe containing an elongated stainless steel inner tube of smaller diameter. The outer pipe is crimped or welded onto the inner tube to create a fuel chamber with connectors for the inflow and outflow of fossil fuel therethrough. The fuel chamber contains at least three catalytic elements each comprised of a different metal selected from the group Au, Cu, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Zn and platiniridium, which may be electroplated small-pore screens. As engine coolant is diverted through the inner tube, excess heat is transferred to the inflowing fuel. The fuel is forced to flow in close proximity to the inner tube for maximum convection, and through the catalytic elements before flowing out through the fuel line to the fuel injectors for more efficient combustion.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine has an exhaust gas sensor upstream of or in an exhaust gas catalytic converter, and having a measurement signal corresponding to a residual oxygen content of the exhaust gas flowing past the exhaust gas sensor. For operation, an air ratio is specified, a specified forced stimulation is applied thereto, and at least one actuator that influences the mixture is set by appropriately controlling the actuator. In correlation with a rising edge of the forced stimulation, a first maximum value of the air ratio is determined according to the signal profile of the exhaust gas sensor measurement signal during a first measurement duration, and a second maximum value of the air ratio is determined according to the exhaust gas sensor measurement signal during a subsequent second measurement duration. A first sensor characteristic value is determined based on the first and second maximum values.

Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control apparatus of the present invention includes a determination section and a reverse direction correction introducing section. The determination section determines whether or not an output of the downstream air-fuel ratio sensor falls within a predetermined range whose center corresponds to a target value corresponding to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. When the output of the downstream air-fuel ratio sensor falls within the predetermined range, the reverse direction correction introducing section temporarily introduces, to an air-fuel ratio correction in a direction requested by the output, an air-fuel ratio correction in a direction opposite to the requested direction.
