Abstract: A medical image system includes an X-ray imaging device with a Talbot or Talbot-Lau interferometer, a reconstructed image generation unit, an extraction unit, a feature value calculation unit and a determination unit. The generation unit generates, among a differential phase image, an absorption image and a small-angle scattering image, at least the differential phase image based on an image signal obtained by the X-ray imaging device imaging a joint part. The extraction unit extracts a joint cartilage region based on the differential phase image. The calculation unit analyzes the joint cartilage region to calculate a feature value indicating a joint cartilage state. The determination unit compares the feature value with a predetermined reference value and determines, based on the comparison result, into which one of predetermined scores of multiple stages the joint cartilage state falls.

Abstract: A wicking component is integrated into an arthroscopically deployable bone anchor, and is intended to improve soft tissue-to-bone repair. Once deployed, the fibrous wick component extends from within the bone tunnel, out of the hole, and to the bone-tendon interface on the bone surface. The tissue is approximated against the bone, sandwiching the wick material between the bone and tissue. The wick component is ideally a polymeric fibrous or tissue-based scaffold that provides a pathway for cells (autologous bone marrow constituents and blood) to travel from within the bone to the soft tissue-bone interface, accelerating and promoting the healing response. The system provides a biomimetic structure that stimulates the extracellular matrix to encourage cell attachment and potentially improve the healing response. The wick component does not need to be integrated into a suture anchor and installed when the suture anchor is deployed.

Abstract: An instrument for delivering a suture transfascially may include a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, and a pair of needles that are moveable to an extended position beyond the end of the shaft. One or more sutures are carried by the instrument and may be delivered transfascially. A transfascial suture assembly includes a suture having a first segment, a second segment, and an intermediate segment therebetween. A force distributing member is locatable at the intermediate segment. Suture retainers may be provided at the end of each suture segment, and may have a connection that is moveable relative to the portion of the suture segment connected therewith. A method of delivering transfascial sutures includes inserting a twin-needle instrument loaded with one or more sutures into an abdominal cavity and deploying, from within the abdominal cavity, the suture carrying needles through a soft tissue repair patch and then through at least part of the abdominal wall.

Abstract: A surgical staple for compressing bones or bone fragments includes a first leg, a second leg, and a bridge monolithically formed with the first and second legs. The bridge has a first end section from which the first leg extends and a second end section from which the second leg extends. A connection between the first leg and the first end second forms a cross-sectional profile, and the bridge has an engagement portion at the first end section that extends away from the cross-sectional profile for engagement with an external tool to adjust the staple from a relaxed state to an expanded state. When the staple is in the relaxed state, at least a portion of the bridge is bent or curved, and free ends of the legs are closer to one another than are portions of the legs connected to the bridge.
