In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a system for measuring tissue includes a fiber optic probe having a proximal end, a distal end, and a diameter of 2 mm or less. This small diameter allows the system to be used for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease or other small lumens or soft tissue with minimal trauma. A delivery optical fiber is included in the probe coupled at the proximal end to a light source. A filter for the delivery fibers is included at the distal end. The system includes a collection optical fiber (or fibers) in the probe that collects Raman scattered radiation from tissue, the collection optical fiber is coupled at the proximal end to a detector. A second filter is disposed at the distal end of the collection fibers.

Abstract: A pulse oximetry measurement system uses a pseudo-random noise generator to stimulate one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs). The light amplitudes from these LEDs, after passing through a part of a body, are detected by a phototransistor or photodiode and digitized with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The digitized ADC light amplitude values are re-correlated with the outgoing pseudo-random noise stimulus. Spread spectrum techniques are known for their noise mitigation properties, and ability to pass multiple signals through the same medium without interference. Thus, these measurements can be performed substantially simultaneously with minimal interference from each other.

Abstract: A catheter includes a proximal shaft and a distal shaft having differing diameters; often, the distal shaft will have a smaller diameter than the proximal shaft. A coupling joins the distal shaft to the proximal shaft. For example, a proximal portion of the distal shaft can be inserted into the coupling through its distal end, while the proximal portion of the coupling can be inserted into the proximal shaft through its distal end. To provide an atraumatic transition from the distal shaft to the proximal shaft, coupling can taper towards its distal end, for example by using a dome- or frustoconical-shape for the distal portion of the coupling. The exterior of the coupling can be ribbed to facilitate bonding to the proximal shaft. The distal shaft can be formed into at least a partial loop having a fixed or variable radius of curvature.

Abstract: A method of atrial focal source detection is provided which includes detecting, via sensors, electro-cardiogram (ECG) signals over time. Each ECG signal is detected via one of the sensors and indicates electrical activity of a heart. The method also includes determining, for each ECG signal, local activation times (LATs) each indicating a time of one of a plurality of atrial activations of a corresponding ECG signal and detecting whether one or more focal source areas of activation in the heart is indicated based on the detected ECG signals and the one or more local LATs. S-waves can be distinguished from non-S-waves by generating models for each atrial activation and classifying atrial activations. Maps can be generated by visually indicating, for each sensor, a level of incidence of the atrial activations occurring before atrial activations of neighboring sensors within a period of time.
