  • Patent number: 7469632
Abstract: Present-day harvest methods for sweet sorghum are labor intensive, and/or require that large quantities of matter be removed to a central location for processing. A field harvester for sweet sorghum would cut the crop and reduce it to its separated juice and solids in the field. A cutter/feeder unit cuts the crop off and feeds it into a multiple roller press where most of the juice is removed. An optional screw press may be used to further remove juices from the solids. The solids are filtered from the juice using an endless belt filter press unit. The pH of the juice may be adjusted by the addition of some acid to inhibit bacterial action. The solids may optionally be pelletized for use as livestock feed or for fuel. The juice is temporarily stored on the harvester in a mounted or pull-behind tank before it is transferred, ultimately, to a nearby storage/processing location.

Abstract: A rotary press is supported on a frame allowing liquid and solid receivers to be placed underneath the rotary press. The rotary press has an outer ring and an inner drum. The inner drum has an upper and lower flange with a stripper ring retained between these flanges. The flanges form two sides of the cavity where the pressing takes place. The flanges carry the solids away from the pressing zone to a discharge zone where the stripper ring expels the solids. By transporting the solids away from the pressing zone where liquids are expelled, reabsorption of the liquid is avoided. The stripper ring can move relative to the two flanges and is biased against the outer ring by the inner ring. The moving sheet is folded and compressed between rollers whereby to express water therefrom. The folded moving sheet and contained sludge is dried, and the dried sheet and sludge is incinerated. Combustion heat from the incineration step is used in the drying step.

  • Patent number: 6402894
Abstract: Arrangement 1 for washing and dewatering a fiber pulp suspension, which arrangement comprises two hollow, circular-cylindrical screen members 2a, 2b delimited by envelope surface and end walls. The screen members rotate towards each other to form a nip 10, at least one of the said screen members 2a, 2b being arranged in a vat 6 which partially encloses the envelope of the screen member and which, in the direction of rotation of the screen member, converges towards the envelope of the screen member. The invention relates to a sealing arrangement 8 at the end wall of the screen member. By retracting the seal a distance X from the envelope surface of the screen member in a limited area &agr; near the nip 10, the seal is relieved of the very high hydraulic and mechanical pressures which occur in the nip. Wear between the end wall of the drum and the seal at the press nip is reduced. A simple pressurized seal can thus be used with the same low pressure applied along the entire circumference.

  • Patent number: 6273270
Abstract: According to a waste water treatment method and apparatus of the present invention, a permeable sheet 3 is fed into a treatment tank 2 in which a stream is formed. The waste water, which flows downstream, is caused to pass through the permeable sheet 3, while the permeable sheet 3 travels in the treatment tank 2 so as to traverse the surface of the waste water on a downstream side in the flowing direction of the waste water. Therefore, not only the sludge in the waste water but also the oily substances floating in the waste water can be collected and removed because they cling to the permeable sheet 3 and are gathered by it. As a result, a waste water treatment tank 2 and the like can be maintained in a usable state for a long time. In addition, there can be obtained a treated water to which microbial treatment can be applied.

Abstract: A plurality of unit bags 2a, 2b . . . are composed of a permeable strip-shaped nonwoven and arranged in a successive fashion without break so that they can be easily accommodated and stored by being rolled. An annular elastic body 5 disposed around an opening 3a formed to an end of each bag 2a permits the opening 3a to be opened. Since an optically sensing object or a magnetically sensing object is disposed around the opening 3a or at a position spaced apart from the openings 3a, 3b . . . a prescribed distance, the portion of the sensing object can be positioned by a sensing device 15. Further, when, for example, sludge, and the like containing water are accommodated in a waste accommodating bag 1 and squeezed, the sludge, and the like can be easily dehydrated.

  • Patent number: 6044980
Abstract: An apparatus for extracting liquids from a slurry formed of liquids and fibers, like diluted manure or paper mills residue. The apparatus has a rotatable drum covered with a resilient layer. The apparatus also has two draining rolls which are pressed against the drum so that the slurry passing in between is squeezed. Each roll has a hollow cylindrical shell with a uniform distribution of openings. Each roll also has a perforated filter screen fixed to is. The screen has perforations evenly distributed so that only some perforations lie over the openings in the shell. The perforations are smaller in size than the openings. The apparatus also has a pair of wipers in order to wipe the fibers out of the draining rolls and guide the liquids collected in the shells towards a liquids outlet. A reservoir can be mounted above the drum and upper draining roll for receiving the slurry, storing it to build-up a constant pressure, and supplying it in a continuous manner.

  • Patent number: 6004468
Abstract: An apparatus for processing a solid-liquid material comprises a housing formed with a series of interconnected chambers defined by chamber walls with at least two drums mounted in series within the chambers. Each chamber receives one of the at least two drums for rotatable movement therein. Each chamber and the associated drum are dimensioned to define a region therebetween to retain the solid-liquid material. The regions of adjacent chambers communicate with each other to define a continuous passage from drum to drum through the apparatus. Abstract: A method for concentrating a suspension comprises the steps of providing a first surface; providing a second surface; introducing a suspension; moving the second surface relative to the first surface; and applying suction to the second surface. The first surface is relatively liquid-tight and includes a feature for increasing friction. The second surface is relatively liquid-pervious, faces the first surface, and is moveable relative to the first surface. Introduction of the suspension between the first and second surfaces forms a suspension web. Moving the second surface relative to the first surface and applying suction through the second surface causes dewatering of the suspension web and increased friction between the suspension web and the second surface.
