  • Patent number: 4776269
Abstract: A method for agglomerating and dewatering elastomeric material having a relatively high water content wherein the elastomeric material is fed to a pair of counterrotating pressing rolls with a tight nip opening. The elastomeric material is drawn through the nip opening and compacted and dewatered therein. • Patent number: 4760789
Abstract: An adjustable mounting mechanism for a distribution roller in a printing, duplicating or like machine which includes a moisture or ink system having a plurality of distribution rollers for distributing moisture or ink to a printing couple of the machine. A pair of fixed rollers and a removable roller are located on the machine in a triangular configuration with parallel axes of rotation. The adjustable mounting mechanism includes a triangulated array of pivot arms movable generally perpendicular to the axes of the rollers. Two of the pivot arms define a V-shaped yoke to cradle the removable roller, and the other pivot arm defines a clamp for holding the removable roller in the cradle. Each of the other two pivot arms and, therefore, the removable roller is adjustable generally radially toward and away from the respective fixed roller to adjust the pressure or gap between the removable roller and the respective fixed roller.

  • Patent number: 4736678
Abstract: A hydraulic adjustment motor containing a piston-and-cylinder unit is provided at the roll surface of a roll to be moved to position the roll surface relative to another roll surface of a further roll. Each adjustment motor is arranged between the related roll surface to be moved and its related roll stand. A regulation device is arranged between a pressure source, the pressure chamber of the adjustment motor and a hydraulic medium vessel. This regulation device regulates impingement of the pressure chamber with different pressures up to the maximum pressure of the pressure source and regulates the outflow of a selected volume of the hydraulic medium out of the pressure chamber, correlated to the desired lowering of each roll surface, during lowering of the roll surface and for maintaining a residual volume of the hydraulic medium. Consequently, there is provided a defined relative position between the roll surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4658716
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a controller for controlling the local diameters of a temperature sensitive calender roll by selectively heating sections of a sheet of calenderable material with infrared lamps while the sheet is in contact with the calender roll or before the sheet contacts the roll. The calender roll is made of a material having at least one dimension which responds to changes in temperature. Therefore, thermal expansion of the roll, resulting from contact of the heated sheet with the roll surface, corrects local non-uniformities in the calender roll diameters. If the calender rolls unexpectedly stop or slow down so that the sheet of calenderable material becomes overexposed to infrared radiation, a fire detecting device detects and extinguishes the fire by turning off the infrared heating lamps and flooding the area around the lamps with a fire-extinguishing fluid.

  • Patent number: 4211165
Abstract: Apparatus for the compressive handling of a strip of material, especially for handling paper strip in a paper machine, includes a plurality of cooperating horizontal and vertical roller pairs arranged in ascending and/or descending step-like succession and forming compressive zones through which the strip of material passes. Certain rollers are movably mounted so that they may be pivoted away from the compressive zone for replacement during operation of the paper machine. Cable guides are provided for leading the strip through the compressive zones and, owing to the movable mounting arrangement of the rollers, the course of the cable guides through the compressive zones need not be altered when a roller is exchanged.

  • Patent number: 4194445
Abstract: A grain husker has two decorticating rollers which are accommodated in a housing, one of the rollers being rotatable about a stationary axis, while the other roller is mounted on a carrier which, in turn, is mounted on the housing for pivoting relative thereto in such a manner that the movable roller moves with the carrier closer and farther away from the stationary axis of the first-mentioned roller. A drive for the rollers includes a motor, a driving pulley mounted on the output shaft of the motor, and idler pulley and a driven pulley of the movable roller, all of these components being also mounted on the carrier for displacement therewith, the drive further including a driven pulley of the stationarily mounted roller and an endless element which is trained about all of the above-mentioned pulleys.

  • Patent number: 4168660
Abstract: A sugar mill utilizing an arrangement of rolls journalled between a pair of frame members, having a driven anvil roll as the lowermost roll. An adjustment cane roll is disposed between the frame members above the anvil roll. Intermediate and to one side of the cane and anvil rolls is a crusher/feed roll, and to the other side of the cane and anvil rolls there is a bagasse roll. The three uppermost rolls are adjustable with respect to one another, the side rolls may each be mounted in an eccentric or screw adjustable bearing support arrangement. A generally vertically disposed chute drops chopped sugar cane between the feed and cane rolls to permit gravity to aid in feeding of the chopped cane to the sugar mill. This arrangement of the rolls permits a higher sugar mill output per revolution of the rolls, than that of the prior art.

  • Patent number: 4130042
Abstract: A die-cutter assembly including a die-cutting roll and an anvil roll between which a web of material is passed for die-cutting of labels. Spacing between the rolls is controlled by a pair of bearings at each end of one of the rolls, each pair including an inner bearing in which the roll is journaled and an outer bearing which is in rolling contact with the die-cutting roll. A rotatable eccentric spacer between the inner and outer bearings provides an adjustment of the spacing between the axis of the cutting roll and the axis of the anvil roll.

  • Patent number: 4121089
Abstract: Apparatus in a copier fusing assembly for distributing the wear on a hot roll occasioned by the use of variable length copy sheets. This wear is distributed over the horizontal length of the hot roll by reversing the hot roll, end-for-end. Easy reversal of the hot roll is made possible by utilization of a hot roll subframe which is removably mounted in the copier fuser mainframe. A handle on the subframe allows for manual removal of the subframe and hot roll from the mainframe and out of the copier where they are reversed and inserted back into the mainframe.

  • Patent number: 4117054
Abstract: The method maintains a set nip clearance at a uniform value across the widths of the calendar, at different calendar loads, in at least the last nip, in the working direction, of a calender stack or the like including at least three rolls subjected to a common work-press load, with at least one roll being crowned to correspond to the maximum load of the calendar and at least one roll being adjustable. The thickness of the material being treated is sensed at one or several points in a direction transverse to the material web, or the deflection, or the load, is sensed at one or several of the rolls. The position of one or more adjustable rolls is displaced, relative to the common plane through the roll axes, in accordance with the sensing in a manner such that the axis of the adjustable roll or rolls remains parallel to the adjacent roll axis. The adjustable rolls may be displaced horizontally either linearly or arcuately to follow the contour of the adjacent rolls.

  • Patent number: 4028035
Abstract: An industrial-sized briquetting press having two independent bearing housings for supporting the drive shafts of the briquette-forming rolls. One of the bearing housings is rigidly mounted and the other is pivotally mounted to the first by a pivot located midway between the longitudinal axes of the drive shafts. The axes are substantially parallel and the pivotally mounted housing moves in the plane of the axes. The rolls are biased together by hydraulic cylinders. Connecting rods attached to the rigidly mounted bearing housing, slidably passing through the pivotally mounted bearing housing and hollow piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders, and supporting the hydraulic cylinders prevent movement of the briquette-forming rolls in relative longitudinal and lateral directions. The press has no overall frame permitting easy access for repair and maintenance and the pivot is demountable permitting removal of the pivotally mounted bearing housing.
