  • Patent number: 9163833
Abstract: A sealing apparatus (22) for use with a traveling grate (18) including a base (44) and one or more legs (42) extending upwardly from the base (44). The sealing apparatus (22) includes at least one flange (52) extending outwardly from one or more of the legs (42). The flange (52) includes a surface (53) extending between the leg (52) and one or more edges (52A, 52B, 52L) of the flange (52). The surface (53) includes a sealing portion (55) adjacent to the leg (52) and one or more discharge portions (56) sloped downwardly from the sealing portion (55) to one or more of the edges (52A, 52B, 52L), for discharge of wear materials therefrom. The sealing portion (55) is positioned proximate to a portion of the traveling grate (18) and defines a gap (G2) therebetween. The gap (G2) is configured to mitigate flow therethrough.

  • Publication number: 20090293785
Abstract: A chain grate for a combustion system is disclosed, comprising a continuous belt of connected links. The links have a generally boxlike configuration open to below and comprise a substantially solid upper surface, and at least one downwardly projecting wall. At least some of said links comprise at least one vent open to said surface. The grate comprises an array of substantially isolated cells open to below and a substantially continuous upper surface defined by said links. The vents permit combustion gas to travel from the interior of said cells to said surface. The links are joined together in a linear array by a hinge structure at the opposing ends of the links. The grate is intended to be supported by a bed which includes one or more plenums which have a flat upper surface for supporting the grate. The grate rests upon the flat surface to effectively form a sealed, cellular structure defined by the interior spaces within the link bodies.

  • Patent number: 5081938
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for effecting bidirectional feeding of particulate material, such as in the bidirectional feeding of fuel to a circulating fluidized bed combustor. A feeder has a housing with at least one inlet in the upper portion of the housing and a chain and flight (drag chain) conveyor disposed within the housing. An intermediate plate is disposed between the upper and lower runs of the chain and flight conveyor and cooperates with the flights in the upper run so that the upper run conveys solid material in a first direction along the intermediate plate. A bottom plate is disposed below the lower run and cooperates with the lower run flights to convey solid material in a second direction opposite the first direction. First and second outlets are provided for the solid material, the first outlet at one end of the housing, and the second outlet at the other end of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4895081
Abstract: A calorimetry system for measurement of the heating value of coal, having a combustor 24 and a mixing unit 30 wherein heat from combustion gases is transferred to air. The system has a gravimetric feeder 64 for providing coal at a measured mass feed rate; the coal including any moisture present therein. The coal is pulverized in an air-driven mill or pulverizer 14 which is fed coal from the feeder and is separated by a cyclone separator 16 into two streams; one carrying coal and air mixed together in a controlled ratio to the combustor. The air which drives the separator, together with fines of the coal and moisture is fed to an afterburner 26 of the combustor so that the thermal dynamics of the entire coal stream is involved in the heating value measurement.

  • Patent number: 4765256
Abstract: A gasifier (10) for particulate combustible material in effect separates the pyrolysis and the oxidation of the flowable fuel material with a traveling grate (40) for advancing a bed of the material from a material feed station (40A) to a material discharge station (40B). A material feed mechanism (60) has fuel and ember chutes (62, 64) for depositing hot embers below combustible material. Discharge transport apparatus 70 separates ash from combustible residue, i.e., embers. A recirculation transport (80) delivers combustible residue to the ember chute (64) where it is reintroduced to the traveling grate (40) for a further transit through the gasifier (10).

  • Patent number: 4621584
Abstract: Method and device for firing solid fuels, substantially in the form of lumps or pieces, in a furnace having a combustion chamber (1) with a sustantially horizontal bottom (10), upon which is maintained a fuel bed (3) with relatively great thickness while supplying fuel within the very bed (3), through which bed primary combustion air is fed from below through mutually spaced primary air passages (18) in the combustion chamber bottom (10), the combustion gas which leaves said chamber (1) furthermore being subjected to a subsequent secondary combustion in a secondary combustion chamber after addition of secondary combustion air.

  • Patent number: 4487138
Abstract: A traveling grate for a furnace. The grate is formed of plural pipes through which flows a cooling medium, in particular water. The grate also includes plural movable chains. Grate plate guide flanges are arranged laterally on the pipes. The guide plates, which are connected to the chain rest on the guide flanges. The upper strand of each movable chain is guided in an additional chain guide. The lower strand serves to move ash which has fallen through the grate away to a collection station.Due to the heat discharge through the pipes, the heating performance of the grate can be increased or at a given heating performance an elevated life span can be achieved. Fluid which can be heated up in the pipes can be used profitably, for example to preheat boiler heat.

  • Patent number: 4475468
Abstract: An incinerator with a moving-bed stoker in which a chain conveyor is inclined in the direction of its movement and a plurality of fuel- or fire-bed members L-shaped in cross section are mounted on the links of the chain conveyor, whereby a step-like moving fuel- or fire-bed is defined. Each fuel- or fire-bed member comprises an upright or vertical plate and a horizontal plate and combustion air injection holes are formed through the upright or vertical plate so that the foreign matter such as ash, metal pieces or the like as well as the molten ash produced as the result of the combustion of waste with a low melting point can be prevented from falling through the combustion air holes into the stoker.

  • Patent number: 4353315
Abstract: A flexible, perforate grate, e.g. made of a mat of meshed metal chain links or wirecloth belting, is provided at intervals spaced across its length, with individually extensile/retractile supports. By coordinately extending and retracting the supports, the material fed onto the grate at one margin can be walked, rolled, tumbled and similarly redistributed and moved across the grate to the opposite margin, and, for instance dumped off the far edge of the grate into a residue collecting system. The grate may be basically horizontal, or it may have a general cascade-like tilt either forwards or rearwards. In one embodiment, the supports are seen each having a grate mat contact member which pivots during extension and retraction in order to further alter the shape of the grate mat intervening two adjacent supports.
