  • Patent number: 5554221
Abstract: A system and apparatus for producing seasoned food products where seasoning is performed at individual packaging lines. The product is conveyed from the preparation area to a packaging area in an unseasoned condition. Upon reaching the packaging lines, which are disposed in packaging departments in the packaging area, the product can be selectively seasoned independent of other packaging lines. After seasoning, the product is packaged and prepared for delivery. At each packaging line, a volumetric feeder includes a feed head that cooperates with a tumbler having helical flights to produce continuous controlled product portions. A seasoning dispenser is positionable within the tumbler and can be adjusted to dispense a given weight of seasoning at a given rate, based on the amount of product passing through the tumbler, to obtain consistent seasoning levels and coverage.

  • Patent number: 5538195
Abstract: The present invention relates to a granulating and coating technique, and more particularly to a technique wherein powder and granules are contained in a drum rotating about a substantially horizontal axis and the rotary drum is rotated for granulation of the granules and (or) coating. There is provided a rotary drum (1) for containing the powder and granules (M) and rotating about the substantially horizontal axis, and also provided a baffle member (12) continuously or intermittently rotating or swinging at the inside of the powder and granules (M) layer in the rotary drum (1). The baffle is turned in the granules, so that the raw materials for the powder and granules can be prevented from adhering to the baffle member and the rotary drum or from peeling off therefrom, thus obtaining products of uniform coating.

  • Patent number: 5538747
Abstract: The invention proposes the damping of grain, for example, by creating a rotating layer (20) in a damping chamber (2) with the help of acceleration rotors (3). For this, the cross-section of the rotation chamber is designed to form an outer boundary around two or, preferably, three acceleration rotors (3, 3', 3"). In this way, the rotating layer is forced into an eccentric and spiralling motion within the damping chamber (2). Damping is carried out in a very gentle manner, so that there occurs hardly any abrasion and no grain damage. Additional advantages include a longer and controllable reaction period during damping, optimized preparation for milling and a shorter, controllable tempering period.

An annular duct is disposed at the outside of the cylindrical portion of the rotary drum in a manner to surround the cylindrical portion. This annular duct is provided with a gas supply duct and an exhaust duct. In the annular duct, partition walls define a vent path, in which the drying gas which has been supplied from the gas supply duct flows through an accumulated layer, and thereafter, flows to the exhaust duct. The direction of flow of the drying gas in the vent path is changed over by gas supply-exhaust changeover dampers.

  • Patent number: 5514399
Abstract: Substantially uniform distribution of a particulate composition such as a seasoning or spice, on both the top and bottom surfaces of baked good or snack pieces is achieved by applying the composition as a curtain or sheet from within a housing as the substrate pieces are transported and tumbled by counterrotating brushes. The curtain or sheet extends in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the longitudinal cavity through which the substrate pieces are transported. The apparatus includes a housing having a raised portion for enclosing and permitting the curtain or sheet to disperse in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the housing cavity as the composition descends towards the baked good or snack pieces. A lowered portion, downstream of the raised portion of the housing prevents escape of airborne particulate composition to the atmosphere through the baked good or snack piece outlet.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for uniformly coating particulate material. The apparatus includes a frame, a cylindrical drum rotatable about an axis tilted with respect to a horizontal plane, and a spray nozzle extending into the drum so as to spray a coating solution onto the particulate material tumbled within the rotating drum. Perforations in the side wall of the drum allow a flow of air through the drum so as to dry the material within the drum as it is coated with solution. A vacuum system removes the coated seeds from the drum without manual handling. In operation, the seeds form a dense mass, and migrate away from the mass as the seeds increase in size and weight from the sprayed coating. Eventually, all of the particles are uniformly coated, and thus a new mass is formed and the process repeated until the material reaches a desired size.

Abstract: A sugar slurry spray discharge nozzle (10) for co-spraying steam into the sugar slurry spray. The nozzle (10) finds particular suitability for use in the applying of a sugar coating solution or slurry to a Ready-To-Eat breakfast cereal base in an enrober. By virtue of providing a steam assist to the spraying of the sticky sugar coating solution, desirable reductions in downtime for cleaning of the enrober are achieved. The improved nozzle includes a cylindrical steam chamber (14), an axially extending slurry supply tube (22) disposed therein having a discharge port (25) and orifice means for discharging steam into the slurry discharge such as opposed pair of arcuate steam discharge slits (66, 68) proximate the slurry tube discharge port (25). Abstract: A vibratory coating apparatus may be used to coat articles, such as chocolate pieces, with discrete coating materials. The coating apparatus features a feed bowl assembly with an attached ramp system. The feed bowl and ramp system are mounted upon a vibratory drive assembly which imparts a vibratory motion, at a predetermined frequency, to the bowl and ramp system. The vibratory motion causes agitation of the chocolate pieces and coatings, and causes the coated chocolates and loose coatings to migrate up the ramp system and out of the coating apparatus. The chocolate pieces are conveyed along a first inclined ramp from the bottom surface of the feed bowl to a location outside the bowl. A second inclined ramp receives loose coating material from a downstream location of the first ramp and redeposits the coating material both at an upstream location of the first ramp separate from the bowl and within the bowl.

Abstract: A V-shaped hopper is comprised of a pair of opposing linkages each formed of a lower angularly disposed rectangular plate hinged to an upper angularly disposed rectangular plate to form a hinged corner joint. Each linkage is mounted on a vertical sidewall of a rectangular opening with the bottom of its lower rectangular plate pivotally connected to the bottom thereof and with the top of its upper rectangular plate confined by retaining means thereon to move along the vertical plane thereof. Limiting means is also provided to limit the downward movement of opposing linkages when their hinged corner joints lie adjacent to each other. Upon dropping a plurality of dough balls into the V shaped hopper formed by the upper rectangular plates of the opposing linkages, one settles in the V bottom thereof and the others thereover.

Abstract: An apparatus and process for making pellets from a fluidizable material having a fluid bed chamber with a perforated base and an open upper end in which a rotatable means for shaping the pellets is located. Gas for the formation of a fluidized current is introduced through the perforated base. A fluid spray for the agglomeration and coating of the fluidizable material is introduced into the fluid bed chamber, preferably near the perforated base in the central area of the fluid bed chamber. Additionally, a device for channeling agglomerated material is preferably located at a distance above the perforated base and concentrically with the longitudinal axis of the sprayer. A fluidized current carries particles, while still plastic, upwardly through the channeling device causing them to impinge on the underside of the rotatable means.
