Abstract: In the gravure coating apparatus, while a bead portion of a coating liquid is formed between a roll surface of a gravure roll to which the coating liquid is excessively supplied and a web that runs continuously, the web is pressed on the gravure roll by using a backup roll, whereby a desired amount of the coating liquid is applied to the web, a liquid supply device having an inclined surface that is inclined downward toward the roll surface and a gap too narrow for the coating liquid to flow down between the roll surface and the inclined surface is provided at a position near the bead portion on the upstream side in the direction of rotation of the gravure roll so that the coating liquid flows down on the inclined surface and is supplied to the gravure roll. A liquid return of an excess coating liquid that is not used for coating in the bead portion is less liable to occur, so that a streak trouble on a coating surface formed on the web can be prevented from occurring.

  • Patent number: 5735959
Abstract: An apparatus of spreading a fluid on the floor includes four rectangular application rotating bodies partially overlapping each other, and four nozzles supplying the fluid provided in rotation areas of the respective application rotating bodies. The rotation position of the application rotating body is detected by a light shielding plate and a photosensor. A control portion controls each component so that the fluid is applied onto the floor from a tank through the nozzle by a pump when the application rotating body is not directly under the nozzle. As a result, the apparatus of spreading a fluid on the floor capable of optimally controlling the quantity of the fluid to be applied according to the application condition can be provided.

  • Patent number: 5690738
Abstract: A liquid dispenser and contact applicator having an applicator member which in a preferably comprises at least one roller for contacting advancing workpieces and applying liquid to surfaces thereof as they pass. A cyclically repeatable volumetric displacement pump accurately meters predetermined quantities of the liquid from a source to a dispensing tube extending axially along the applicator member, and applies pressure to the liquid within the dispensing tube so as to periodically and repeatedly expel metered quantities of the liquid out of the dispensing tube as a spray, into the hollow interior confines of roller type applicator members. The roller of such applicators is highly perforate in nature to conduct the liquid through its sidewall and into a compressible outer cover through which the liquid passes to be present at the outer surface, for application thereby to the advancing workpieces.

  • Patent number: 5688363
Abstract: A roll-fed labelling machine that can be quickly changed to process containers and labels of different sizes does not require changed cutters to match different label sizes by engaging at least 50% of each label on the vacuum drum before it is cut from the web. Infeed guides and roll-on-pad assemblies, specific to individual container sizes can be installed swiftly by means of fixed alignment pins. The starwheel, having a diameter that is only five times the diameter of the mid-size container that the labelling machine is designed to process reduces abrasion and vibration. Starwheels that are aligned and with preset timing adjustment integral with the starwheel members for each container size are changed quickly to synchronize starwheel timing with that of the labelling machine.

  • Patent number: 5674571
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the coating of liquids, particularly of colour markings, onto film webs or the like. A printing unit (16) serves for the transfer of especially small colour markings to film webs. In the printing unit (16), a dye roller (25) dips from above into a dye chamber (24) which is open at the top and takes up dye by means of a rotating movement. This dye flows constantly or intermittently through the dye chamber (24) which is dimensioned to be relatively small. The dye can be fed to the dye chamber (24) from a reservoir (43) via a feed conduit (45) or discharged from the dye chamber (24) to another reservoir via a discharge conduit (46). A further particularity consists in measures for the improvement of the proofness by sucking off dye residues on the dye roller (25) by means of suction conduits (74, 76).

Abstract: A method and an operator interchangeable apparatus with fast warm up time for coating flowable and pasty materials onto a workpiece, especially for the application of glue and other adhesive substances to the back of signatures in bookbinding and the like, uses a first internally heated rotating roller for applying the material which is partly immersed in a bath thereof and a second internally heated roller to smooth and doctor the adhesive on clamped stacks of pages that have passed over the first roller. Production rates suitable of in-line use with reproduction equipment are achieved with no buildup on the edges. The relative velocity of the surface of the adhesive on the first roller is maintained at the same velocity as the clamped stack of pages. A mechanical adjustment device and method that provides for ease of interchangeability. A control device for proportioning the electrical power to the heating elements for the two rollers.

  • Patent number: 5538575
Abstract: A labeling machine applies an adhesive to labels for attachment to containers and has a glue bar which engages a glue roller. A label drum receives and delivers labels into engagement with containers for wrap around labeling of the containers. An adhesive is delivered to the glue bar. The adhesive is a hot melt adhesive which can maintain its label bond while withstanding high heat such as from a pasteurization process. The hot melt adhesive has a viscosity which tends to increase if the adhesive is not kept in constant motion or is allowed to set. The shear of the adhesive is increased during adhesive transfer to ensure low viscosity transfer of the adhesive from the glue roller to a label positioned on the label drum.

Abstract: An apparatus applies dressing fluid to a bowling lane surface in a discreet pattern laterally across a plurality of zones on the bowling lane. A carriage, for movement along a bowling lane, has an applicator mounted thereon for applying the dressing fluid to the bowling lane surface. Dressing fluid is supplied from a reservoir by a plurality of pulse valves which supply the dressing fluid to a plurality of fluid dispersion chambers, each having an inlet connected to one of the pulse valves and having an outlet positioned to apply dressing fluid to the applicator. The outlet has a width equal to the width of one of the zones. A controller is provided for selectively activating each of the pulse valves to discharge a discrete amount of fluid dressing into each dispersion chamber. Each zone may be the width of one board across the bowling alley so that different discrete amounts of oil can be applied to each board.
