Abstract: An apparatus and method for high speed placement of labels onto containers by a continuous motion. The label stock is transferred to a rotary vacuum drum, carried by rotation of the vacuum drum to a glue application station and then to a label application station where the glue coated labels are wrapped onto containers. As the containers reach the labeling position they are already rotating so that their surfaces are moving at the same speed as the drum surface. The labeled containers are then discharged onto a conveyor where they are held against rotation and stabilized by a pair of parallel belt drives.Glue is imprinted onto each label by a roller with a patterned surface. The roller picks up glue as it rotates past a glue bar surface which emits glue from a tapered exit. The tapered configuration causes build up of suitable pressure so as to force the glue into the pattern on the glue roller. A downstream edge of the glue bar surface acts as a doctor to spread and wipe off excess glue.

Abstract: A doctor blade head assembly, particularly for use in a flexographic printing press, has a head body pivoted to a support frame with an inflatable air tube disposed therebetween. The air tube extends along a channel having a bottom formed with spaced apart raised portions which cause the air tube to bulge out at these locations. In this way the air tube essentially only presses against the head body at these spaced apart locations, for example at the center and adjacent the ends, which reduces the tendency of the head body to bend along its length. This provides a more uniform ink film on the ink roll being inked by the doctor blade head assembly. End seal arrangements at the ends of the head body each include a resilient block seal and a resilient pad seal with which greased edge portions of the doctor blades slidably engage. The doctor blades overhang the ends of the ink roll, and an ink outlet passageway extends through each end seal arrangement independently of the seals.

Abstract: A supply unit 1 is provided for maintaining a desired level of a viscous liquid in a supply tank 2. The liquid is supplied through an inlet passageway 5 down to a horizontal portion 8 and then to a vertical portion 9 communicating with one side of a valve piston 11. When the tank 2 is full of a liquid, this liquid will be drawn up through a passageway 14 in a body 6 by a gear pump 15 which pumps the liquid through a supply line 18 to act on the other face of the piston 11. When the level of liquid within the supply tank 2 falls so that it cannot be drawn up through the passageway 14, the pressure on the upper face of the piston 11 will be relieved and the inlet pressure of the liquid in the inlet passageway 5 will then cause the piston valve 11 to open to allow the liquid to pass through an outlet passageway 13 leading into the supply tank 2.

Abstract: A nozzle having a flexible blade member with a flat adhesive-receiving surface in combination with a rotary transfer roll and side wall elements forms a reservoir for adhesive "upstream" (in the direction of roll rotation) of the line of contact of a straight edge of the surface with the roll surface, the arrangement being such that a layer of the adhesive, doctored by blade member to control its thickness and with its width controlled by the wall elements, is applied to the roll surface and carried thereby to the operating locality. An adhesive supply system is also provided for supplying adhesive to the reservoir, said system including a melting device for adhesive in solid form and pressure control means for controlling the pressure under which the adhesive is supplied.
