Publication number: 20030097980Abstract: A catch pan apparatus for starting and stopping coating is disclosed for coating a downwardly moving receiving surface by curtain coating. The catch pan device includes an intercepting pan that intercepts the curtain when coating is stopped and a substantially horizontal intercepting surface that intercepts the curtain only when the catch pan moves to start or stop coating. The intercepting pan and horizontal intercepting surface intersect to create a volume that retains in the catch pan excess liquids that would otherwise spill onto the coating receiving surface as the catch pan is retracted to a non-intercepting position. The catch pan is controllably retracted at high speed through the curtain using linear servomotors such that the releasing edge of the horizontal intercepting surface passes close to the coating receiving surface at the point of curtain release. Flushed edge guides maintaining curtain width are positioned outside the lateral edges of the catch pan.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 26, 2001Publication date: May 29, 2003Applicant: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Kenneth J. Coating stations apply a repositional adhesive and release coat in the construction of repositional adhesive labels. The coating station is followed by a dryer and chill rolls. In the construction of permanent adhesive labels a coating station for applying a release coat and a release coat curing station, as well as permanent adhesive application station, are also provided. Changeover time from the manufacture of one type of label to the other is short.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1995Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignee: Moore Business Forms, Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 6146708Abstract: Coating liquids are supplied to a coating hopper, and are extruded onto a slide surface of the coating hopper through slits. A pair of guide members are provided at both sides of the slide surface. Side faces of the guide members are positioned at both ends of a desired width of the coating liquids flowing of the slide surface to be applied on a traveling web. Consequently, the coating liquids that flow over the whole width of the slits are divided into the inside and the outside of the desired width by the guide members, and the divided coating liquids are extruded onto the slide surface. The coating liquids within the desired width flow down between the guide members and coat the web, whereas the coating liquids outside the desired width are collected through channels, which are formed in the guide members.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1998Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kiyoshi Kamitani

Patent number: 6136371Abstract: A method and apparatus for making masking tape is provided. A hot melt or thermoplastic adhesive having no added foaming agents, blowing agents, or surfactants is applied to a paper backing having a moisture content, wherein the adhesive is at a temperature near or below the boiling point of water. The adhesive-coated tape is then advanced to a heating device and heat is applied thereto such that the moisture present in the tape is vaporized and dispersed throughout the adhesive to give the adhesive a foam-like quality.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2000Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Shurtape Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Muzaffer Fidan, Donald H. Patent number: 6120853Abstract: A slide bead coating method and apparatus which is able to form a stable bead over the width of coating solutions and regularly coat the coating solutions on a web to an edge region and which is able to change the width of the coating solutions without stopping the coating operation even if the width of the web changes.A discharged liquid from a nozzle is applied on both side edges of the coating solutions flowing down a slide surface. Thereby, the stable bead can be formed at the side edges of the coating solutions, so that the coating solutions can be coated on the web to the edge region. Edge bead is formed at both side edges of the coating solutions through the nozzle, so that the width of the coating solutions can be adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1999Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yasuhito Naruse, Kiyoshi Kamitani, Satoru Matsumoto

Patent number: 6117236Abstract: An inexpensive and versatile method for creating a curtain of continuously adjustable width for the purpose of coating portions of a receiving surface to form one or more layers of coating composition comprises a distributor which has a horizontal lip from which the layers detach to form a free-falling curtain. A trough adjacent and below the lip is provided to intercept and divert some portion of the curtain and an edge guide is provided to maintain the width of the remaining portion of the free-falling curtain.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1998Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Kenneth J. Patent number: 6050320Abstract: For the application of glue to band labels (10) or other kinds of blanks, the latter are transported by means of a band label conveyor, in particular by means of a suction belt (15) with conveyor strand (16). Glue is applied by means of glue nozzles (30, 31), which spray glue on the band labels (10) in a substantially horizontal direction. In order to prevent any deleterious effects caused by dripping glue remnants, the band labels (10) are transported in a special manner, in such a way that that an already glued band label (10) is located in a position beneath the glue nozzles (30, 31) when the latter are active.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1998Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Focke & Co. Patent number: 6051065Abstract: A hopper bar having a longitudinal channel formed in the portion of the bar which normally would support a coating lip wherein a wall of the channel is a precision cylindrical locating pin, and has a replaceable hopper lip element, formed to fit within the channel, is provided with a precision round bushing for receiving the locating pin such that upon assembly of the element to the hopper there is no offset significant to the coating process between the slide surface of the hopper bar and the slide surface of the lip element. The lip element may be attached to the hopper wall along the remainder of their mutual length by either bolts or magnets to permit independent longitudinal thermal expansion of the hopper bar and lip element.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1998Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: David A.
