Abstract: An extrusion coater for the production of a magnetic recording medium having at least one coater slot is described, the lower lip arranged in a direction opposite to the running direction of the substrate and displaced forward relative to the upper lip containing, in its interior, a permanent magnet which is oriented approximately parallel to the upper edge of the lower lip and whose field lines are roughly perpendicular to the coating direction of the magnetic dispersion flowing through the coater slot. By means of this arrangement, it is possible substantially to reduce the layer thickness while achieving a satisfactory coating and also considerably to reduce the edge bead.

  • Patent number: 5639514
Abstract: A process for coating a metal substrate for packaging end use by applying to a primary substrate a thermosettable composition which is free of added solvent and has a residual solvent content not exceeding 10% derived from the manufacture of any of the ingredients. The composition is applied as a thermosettable film by extrusion in melt (including plastified) form through an extrusion coating die onto a substrate. There is relative movement between the die and the substrate so that successive areas on the substrate are coated with the thermosettable composition, so as to form a film. The primary substrate is the metal substrate for packaging end use or an intermediate temporary support from which the applied coating is transferred onto the metal substrate for packaging end use. The applied coating is thermally cured after extrusion through the extrusion coating die. Compositions suitable for use in this and other coating processes are described.

  • Patent number: 5622747
Abstract: A photoresist dispensing apparatus coats a wafer with potoresist to define a layer having substantially uniform thickness. The apparatus receives photoresist into a reservoir. The photoresist flows from the reservoir to a substantially planar channel formed between parallel plates. The photoresist flows between the plates towards an elongated straight-edge exit opening. The surface tension and the viscous forces of the photoresist causes a bead to form at the exit opening. By passing a wafer beneath the dispenser apparatus at the exit opening so as to contact the bead, the surface tension is broken. As a result, the photoresist flows onto the wafer. The wafer is moved under the dispenser on tracks which maintain the wafer substantially level. The pressure from the photoresist in the reservoir maintains a steady flow of photoresist as the wafer passes below the dispenser. Accordingly, a substantially uniform layer of photoresist is applied. Photoresist layers as thin as 20 microns have been achieved.

  • Patent number: 5578125
Abstract: The invention concerns a coating system for running webs of cardboard or paper which are carried, or backed, by at least two moving surfaces, in which system the coating substance is applied first on at least one moving surface carrying the web and thereafter transferred, in a press gap formed by the moving surfaces, on the web on one or both sides. The invention is characterized by the following features: the moving surfaces are formed by two continuous belts; the belts proceed jointly with the web contained in between successively through a first press gap and through a second press gap, with each press gap being formed by two rolls that are movable relative to each other; the rotatable roll body of each of the rolls of the second press gap is backed against flexure by means of a stationary element; the diameter of the rolls of the second press gap amounts to maximally one-half, preferably less than one-third, of the diameter of the rolls of the first press gap.

  • Patent number: 5578124
Abstract: Disclosed is a continuous process of non-compressively and uniformly applying a liquid saturant throughout a permeable sheet. The process includes the steps of: 1) providing a continuously advancing permeable sheet having a first surface and a second surface, 2) depositing a substantially laminar flowing curtain of a liquid saturant generally across and onto the first surface of the continuously advancing permeable sheet, 3) applying a vacuum to the second surface of the continuously advancing permeable sheet, and 4) drawing a substantial portion of the liquid saturant through the permeable sheet to generate a substantially uniform distribution of liquid saturant throughout the permeable sheet. The process may also include the step of drying the liquid saturated permeable sheet. The dry bulk of the liquid saturant treated permeable sheet may be within about 15 percent of the dry bulk of an identical untreated permeable sheet.

Abstract: In a coating apparatus where a coating composition is supplied from the lateral side of a manifold, a linear or curved taper along the width of the coating apparatus is given to the length a slit in the direction of flowing-out of the coating composition, so that the slit length is shorter in the counter-supply side than in the supply side of the manifold. The coating apparatus can make the distribution of the quantity of coating uniform in the case where the width of coating is large, or in the case where the quantity of flow per unit width in an individual layer is large.

  • Patent number: 5569491
Abstract: Apparatus for coating a strip article comprises a coating head having a coating surface and elongated open-sided slot formed in the coating surface communicating with an interior channel for delivery of coating material to said slot for transfer to a strip article to be coated. The slot has a slot extension extending into the coating surface at at least one longitudinal end of the slot for applying coating material to an edge region of the strip article. The slot extension communicates with the interior channel only through a constricted opening that prevents substantial leakage of coating material from the slot extension when the slot extension becomes uncovered by the edge region of the strip article. In this way, the strip article can be coated completely up to its transverse edges, without risk of substantial spillage of coating material if the ends of the coating slot become uncovered by the strip article due to inaccurate tracking or variable strip width.
