Abstract: An expandable manifold comprises an expansion chamber defined by a resilient surface. Intake is provided by a conduit extending into the chamber. As reverse impulses resulting from the closing of an intake valve enter the expansion chamber from the output end of the chamber, the volume of the chamber increases as the resilient surface expands. The reverse impulses propagate along the inner surface of the resilient surface toward a void defined by the outer surface of the conduct and the inner surface of the resilient surface. When the intake valve reopens, the reverse impulse flow is redirected and combined with intake flow from the source of fuel/air. The reverse impulses are redirected within and proximate the void. Furthermore, the construction features of the serial drive assembly that can be customized are stored in the database with their variation parameters and limitations. After varying at least one construction feature, the modifications of the engine parameters resulting therefrom are calculated and stored as a parameter difference. The air cleaner is in fluid communication with the engine of the automobile for filtering intake air inducted into the engine. The air inlet tube is made of a first material and is connected at a first end to the air cleaner and open to ambient air at a second end. The inlet tube has a flexible portion that flexes as a result of internal pressure pulsations during the air induction event. The flexing reduces or eliminates acoustic standing waves that have significant pressure fluctuations at the same location in the air induction system as the flexible portion.

  • Patent number: 7111602
Abstract: An actuator for an intake manifold tuning valve to regulate airflow in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine. The actuator includes a motor, control circuit, and sensor all mounted in a housing that has an opening through which an output shaft extends. The output shaft carries a valve blade that is positioned within the intake manifold when the actuator is assembled in place. The sensor provides the control circuit with feedback data indicating the position of the valve blade and this data permits the actuator itself to provide closed loop control of the position of the valve blade using an actuator command received from the engine's electronic control unit. The housing includes a stop member that engages the valve blade at a certain rotational position to thereby enable diagnostic checks of the valve to determine if the blade is present and functioning.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine has an intake device (1), the intake pipes (5 to 8) for the intakes of cylinders of the internal combustion engine and actuators for adjusting the effective pipe lengths of the intake pipes (5 to 8) by closing or opening at least one opening of the intake pipes (5 to 8) up to a hollow body and at least one actuator for controlling the actuators. Within a first speed range whose upper limit is a first threshold value (N1), the actuators are moved into a closed position. For a speed (N), exceeding a first threshold value (N1) and being less than a second threshold value (N2), the actuators are moved into a leakage position. For a speed exceeding the second threshold value (N2), the actuators are moved into an open position.

  • Patent number: 7028679
Abstract: Prior art air charge systems for ‘V’ configuration internal combustion engines use two turbochargers and two intercoolers, one for each bank of cylinders, and require relatively long and complex air ducts. The present invention provides a charge air system for a ‘V’ engine with two banks of cylinders. The system includes a compressor connected by a charge air conduit to a charge air cooler and a flow control valve in communication with first and second branch conduits, each adapted for connection to a bank of cylinders. A branch connector has one inlet in communication with the valve and two outlets in communication with the two branch conduits. The charge air conduit may be disposed in the ‘V’ between the two banks of cylinders. The system uses one compressor and one cooler, thereby reducing component and assembly costs for the engine and keeping air ducting relatively simple.

  • Patent number: 7007921
Abstract: The present invention relates to a high-speed controlling device, suitable for displacing a switching element between two positions with very short switching times. Said device comprises two switchable electromagnets, between which an armature, with a driven coupling to the switching element, is arranged. According to the invention, said armature contacts the first electromagnet in the first position of the switching element and contacts the other electromagnet in the second position of the switching element. In order to obtain particularly short switching times for the switching element, the armature can be firmly secured to a shaft, which is rotatably mounted about its longitudinal axis and to which said switching element is also fixed in an axially offset manner in relation to the armature.

Abstract: A plurality of transmission ports which are respectively closed by air-permeable members are disposed in at least two members selected from among the intake duct, the air cleaner, and the air cleaner hose in the intake apparatus. Amounts of air permeation of the air-permeable members are set so as to be mutually different in order to tune intake sound generated from the inlet port and transmitted sound generated from each of the air-permeable members. In addition, a cleaner-incorporated member may be accommodated in the air cleaner, the cleaner-incorporated member having one end communicating with one of the intake duct and the air cleaner hose in such a manner as to be separated from an interior of the air cleaner and another end which is open in the interior of the air cleaner. An outer wall of the air cleaner is formed by a dual-use outer wall portion which also serves as an outer wall of the cleaner-incorporated member as well as an exclusive-use outer wall portion for forming only the air cleaner.

  • Patent number: 6997157
Abstract: The intake manifold assembly comprises three blocks each molded from a plastic material by injection molding, the three blocks consisting of a first block defining a half of the surge tank, a second block defining a half of the individual intake pipes and a third block defining a remaining half of the surge tank and a remaining half of the individual intake pipes. Thereby, the intake manifold assembly may be provided with various features for defining a pair of intake pipe sections arranged in a mutually parallel relationship while being made to be suitable for an injection molding process. Because the surge tank are defined by the first and third blocks while the individual intake pipes are defined by the second and third blocks, the intake manifold assembly essentially consisting of three blocks can internally define essential features required for a dual port intake device without requiring additional component members.
