  • Patent number: 8944021
Abstract: The invention pertains to a device for starting an internal combustion engine for handheld equipment such as chain saws, lawn mowers, lawn trimmers and the like, or for vehicles such as mopeds, boats or miniature aircraft. The starting device features an output element into which a starter torque can be introduced when the starting device is actuated. The output element is functionally connected to a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine in order to introduce a crankshaft torque therein. The functional connection between the output element and the crankshaft introduces variable crankshaft torque into the crankshaft depending on the rotational angle of the crankshaft at a constant starter torque. This advantageously improves force or torque characteristics for largely operating the starter device independently of the compression phase and the expansion phase of the internal combustion engine.

Abstract: A process for starting a direct-injecting internal-combustion engine is disclosed. The process includes triggering a separate drive for adjusting the camshaft for causing an angular position change between the crankshaft and the camshaft until the separate drive rotates the crankshaft such that a working medium is compressed by a piston in a cylinder of the internal-combustion engine. The position of the pistons of the internal-combustion engine is determined by using position determining devices to identify the cylinder of the internal-combustion engine in which the working medium is compressed. Fuel is injected into the cylinder in which the working medium is compressed when the cylinder is in a proximity of an upper dead center to start the internal-combustion engine.

If the engine 42 is rotated by the recoil starter 41, output of a power generator which is directly connected to the engine 42 is increased, and a CPU 27 is reset at timing t0. At timing t1, if pulse P1 is input from a revolution number sensor 29 to the CPU 27, the CPU 27 outputs first ignition instructions when predetermined time T1 is elapsed (t2). At timing t3, second pulse P2 is input. At that time point, since the CPU 27 is normally operated, ignition timing is obtained from an ignition timing map 30 in accordance with the revolution number calculated by a time interval between the pulses P1 and P2, and the ignition instructions are output at timing t4 in accordance with the ignition timing. Thereafter, the ignition timing is determined using the ignition timing map 30.
