  • Patent number: 4520771
Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block having a plurality of main bearing bulkheads, and a skirt section. Each bearing bulkhead is formed with through-holes each of which as an upper end opening to the skirt section and a lower end opening to the bottom surface of the bearing bulkhead. The bearing bulkhead is formed at its bottom surface with a depression. Each of a plurality of bearing caps is installed to the bearing bulkhead in a manner to fit in the bearing bulkhead depression. Additionally, bolts are disposed respectively in the bearing bulkhead through-holes, each bolt having an upper end section located on the skirt section and a lower end section located in the hole formed in the bearing cap, thereby eliminating the need for excess structure on the bearing cap to sharply reduce the weight of the bearing cap.

  • Patent number: 4483279
Abstract: A single-cylinder motor having a crankshaft mounted or journalled in the crankcase by means of roller-bearing sets. A crank web or lobe with a crankshaft pin is arranged at one end of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pin is drivingly connected via a connecting rod with the piston of the piston-cylinder unit. The other end of the crankshaft, in the region of the end segment thereof, carries the rotor of a magneto ignition device, whereby an end journal of the crankshaft can be coupled with a power take-off or output member. To journal or mount the crankshaft, the roller-body sets are arranged axially nondetachable in a sleeve which coaxially surrounds the crankshaft, whereby the sleeve is pressed or forced into a recess of the crankcase. The sleeve, the roller body sets, and the crankshaft form a structural unit capable of being preassembled.

Abstract: To service an engine (10), it is frequently determined that a cylinder liner (12) and piston (18) must be replaced. It is difficult and time consuming to first install the liner (12) and then the piston (18) with the rings (20) and connecting rod (22). A pre-assembled unit (36) including the liner (12) and piston (18) may be installed on the engine according to a disclosed method. Between the first and the second end bearings there is situated at least one intermediate bearing which is split for permitting lateral installation thereof on the first crankshaft part.

  • Patent number: 4343271
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine with an engine unit support (1) comprising parts directly affected by body resonance as, e.g., cylinder block (2), cylinderhead (3), crankshaft (7) and crankshaft bearings (6), the engine unit support is connected to the crankcase (8) by means of several vibration absorbing and power transmitting elements (29) whereby the crankcase is insulated against body resonance. A sealing element (40; 44) is arranged between the engine unit support (1) for the crankcase (8) and sealing a lower oil-wetted part (15) of the engine oil-tightly against an upper dry part. The vibration absorbing elements (29) are mounted on the one side at the walls (25, 26) of the crankcase (8) and on the other side at the main bearing walls (20, 21) of the engine unit support in the region of the crankshaft axis (22).

  • Patent number: 4327679
Abstract: A reciprocating-piston i.c. engine is supported on a supporting structure by means of mountings which are attached, not to the crankcase wall, but to the main bearing structure of the engine, by means of rigid support members which extend through flexibly-sealed apertures in the crankcase wall and are rigidly secured to the main bearing blocks. The crankcase wall is thus isolated from vibrations generated by internal moving parts of the engine, and the deformations of the crankcase by such vibrations, and hence the level of noise generated by the crankcase wall, are reduced. Where a longitudinal stiffening beam is secured to the bottom bearing blocks of the main bearing structure, some of the rigid supports of the mountings may be attached to the stiffening beam.

Abstract: An engine structural assembly is disclosed including an integral head and upper cylinder section assembly for use in combination with an integral crankcase and lower cylinder section assembly wherein the upper and lower assemblies are formed to receive a wet cylinder liner which is adapted to be directly contacted by engine coolant over only the exterior surfaces of the liner which are received within the upper assembly. For purposes of forming a coolant cavity around the portion of the liner received in the upper assembly, a coolant seal is provided between the liner and the upper assembly adjacent the joinder zone between the upper and lower assemblies. In one embodiment the liner includes a mid stop located adjacent the upper and lower assemblies for holding the mid section of the liner in a fixed axial position and for applying an axial compressive force to the liner along the portion of the liner received within the upper assembly.

  • Patent number: 4198947
Abstract: A modular internal combustion engine is provided in which a single crankcase can be adapted to a plurality of different types of engine configurations. The crankcase is open at its top so that each upper side edge of the crankcase forms a mounting flange while a crankshaft is rotatably carried by the crankcase. Block members and adapter members are provided and each includes a mounting flange formed along each longitudinal side. All of the mounting flanges are substantially identical to each other so that any one mounting flange can be detachably secured to another mounting flange. Thus to construct the engine, one mounting flange of either the block or adapter member is attached to one crankcase mounting flange while one mounting flange on the other member is attached to the other crankcase mounting flange. In addition, the remaining mounting flanges on the block and adapter members register with each other and are secured together.
