  • Patent number: 4998515
Abstract: A cover for use on the forward, timing chain, end of a number of different model multi-cylinder, automotive vehicle type internal combustion engines is formed of an integral cast metal dish-like shape having a forward wall and a surrounding edge wall which define a cavity. The edge wall is shaped to engage and mount upon the forward end of an engine to cover the timing chain and the engine crankshaft extends through a seal mounted within a hole in the wall, with the seal being located upon the exterior of the cover wall for removal without removing the cover. A fuel pump mounting opening, which may be blocked by a removable plate, is formed in the cover edge wall so that a fuel pump may be optionally mounted within the cover by removing the plate. A distributor mechanism receiving opening is formed in the upper end portion of the cover edge wall and alternative screw receiving holes formed in the cover permit mounting different, preselected distributor mechanisms therein.

  • Patent number: 4995891
Abstract: A crankcase filter assembly for filtering air in a crankcase ventilation system. The crankcase filter assembly (71) includes a crankcase filter housing disposed in an air cleaner assembly. The crankcase filter housing defines an opening in fluid communication with the air cleaner assembly and includes a first air inlet or drain hole spaced from opening and an air outlet in fluid communication with an engine crankcase. A filter cartridge supports first and second filters within the crankcase filter housing in respective first and second filter positions establishing a filter spacing therebetween. The filter cartridge interconnects the first and second filters for allowing their insertion and removable from the crankcase filter housing as a single unitary cartridge structure while maintaining the filter spacing between the first and second filters.

  • Patent number: 4969939
Abstract: An air cleaner assembly for a motor vehicle includes a housing which carries a substantially flat valve cover plate which defines a pair of openings. A valve is slidable relative to the valve cover plate through a linkage operated from the vehicle operator's compartment to cover one or the other of the openings in the valve cover plate. During normal operation of the vehicle, combustion air is communicated to the air cleaner housing through the normal air induction system. However, when heavy snow blocks communication through the normal air induction system, the vehicle operator operates the linkage to move the valve to a position opening the other opening into the air cleaner, so that underhood air may be used for combustion as long as the normal air induction system is blocked by snow.

  • Patent number: 4841929
Abstract: A gasoline engine driven flexible line trimmer is provided with a modularly constructed power head section which significantly facilitates the original manufacturing assembly, and subsequent service disassembly, of the power head. In a clutch drive embodiment thereof, the power head has four readily separable modules--an engine module comprising a main engine shroud to which the engine is internally secured; a fan housing module; a starter module comprising a starter housing and a recoil starter mechanism retained therein; and a coupling module comprising a clutch housing carrying therein structure for operatively interconnecting the engine's clutch to the flexible drive shaft disposed within the trimmer shaft. In a direct drive version thereof, the power head has two separable modules--the engine module and a combined fan housing, starter and coupling module defined by a single housing within which the starter and coupling structure is carried.

  • Patent number: 4836160
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided with a sound-insulating enclosure (2), which defines a sealed passage extending through the enclosure. A passage which extends through the enclosure is sealed by a sealing ring (9), which consists of a rubber-elastic material and is disposed between an inner flanged ring (7), which is secured to the engine, and an outer flanged ring (8), which is secured to the enclosure (2). In order to provide sealing means which are satisfactory for a passage for the exhaust manifold (3), the inner flanged ring (7) carries a protective shield (10), which shields the inside surface of the sealing ring (9) and which defines with the sealing ring (9) a clearance (12), which contains a heat-resisting and sound-absorbing insulating material (11).

  • Patent number: 4834041
Abstract: A reciprocating internal combustion engine which is enclosed by a sound-insulating sheath comprises a crankshaft. A coupling which insulates against structure-borne sound is provided for coupling the crankshaft to an auxiliary drive shaft for driving auxiliary devices disposed outside said sheath. Said coupling comprises a resilient ring and axially parallel connecting screws, which are peripherally spaced apart and are secured in alternation to the crankshaft and to the drive shaft and extend through tubular spacers mounted in the ring. The drive shaft is rotatably mounted in a mounting plate, which is fixed to a crossbeam. The internal combustion engine is supported on the crossbeam by an annular member which insulates against structure-borne sound.

  • Patent number: 4832349
Abstract: An FIP (Formed In Place) gasket arrangement includes three hollow parts which are joined with each other in such a way as to sealingly separate the inside and outside thereof. Two of the parts have surfaces which are flush with each other and adjoin at a line extending between the inside and outside of the two parts. The remaining one of the parts has a surface joined with the surfaces of the two parts by interposing therebetween an FIP gasket. The two parts also have edges extending along the above mentioned line, one of the edges being partially chamferred to provide a chamber. The FIP gasket has a portion filling the chamber.

  • Patent number: 4817967
Abstract: A sealing structure for providing a relatively leak-proof seal between the junction of two gaskets which are disposed at an angle relative to one another is disclosed. A first gasket is interposed between two pieces of a first component of a vehicle engine or other device. When the two pieces are assembled together, the first component defines a surface adapted to mate with a corresponding surface formed on a second component of the device. An edge of the first gasket extends beyond the mating surface of the first component. The edge of the first gasket includes a plurality of outwardly extending projections formed integrally therewith. A second gasket is interposed between the mating surfaces of the first and second components. The second gasket includes a plurality of recesses formed in a face thereof, each of which corresponds to one of the projections formed in the first gasket.
