  • Patent number: 4723534
Abstract: A combination fuel holder and draft channel device for use in a fireplace or wood burning stove. The fuel holder in this combination is made from 1/8 inch steel plate and its size, as well as the size of the draft channel, may vary according to the size of the fireplace or stove in which it is to be used. The fuel holder consists of a base plate that lays flat on the bottom of the firebox of the fireplace or stove. Two vertical posts, each 3/4 inches wide and 6 inches high are welded on the forward edge of the base plate, each 2 inches from the center. These posts hold the wood fuel, resting on the base plate, in a compact and manageable pile for controllable combustion. The draft channel is placed between the posts and is held in position by them. The posts add versatility to the holder because pieces of 1 inch conduit pipe can be cut in lengths desired and slipped over the posts to provide added holding capacity. The draft channel is made from the same steel plate as the fuel holder.

  • Patent number: 4487572
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for safely and effectively facilitating the ignition of logs positioned on a grate within a fireplace. It includes an elongated open top container and a base for support. The open top of the container maintains a flame sustained by the combustion of vaporized fuel. Once combustion of the fuel is initiated, the container walls defining this opening receive and conduct heat to the fuel reservoir to vaporize more fuel and thereby sustain combustion. Combustion may be initiated by a combustible wick. The upper section of the windward wall of the container slopes downwardly and outwardly from the opening at the top of the container and this surface cooperates with the surface formed by the bottom of the grate and its contents. Together, these surfaces restrict the natural draft underneath the grate producing somewhat of a venturi effect thereby increasing the velocity of the draft.

  • Patent number: 4190034
Abstract: The present apparatus for starting and fanning a fire, for example in a fireplace, is hand operated and combines in a common handle housing a source of fuel for providing an ignition flame and a power source as well as a fan for blowing air into the fire. The fan is driven by the power source such as a battery. The control for the apparatus is so arranged that the supply of fuel gas and an ignition spark occur substantially simultaneously, whereby the fan is preferably operating on "low". Once the fire has started the fuel gas supply is stopped and the fan may be operated on "high" by an electric motor which may be driven by said battery or through an adapter from a power outlet.

  • Patent number: 4102317
Abstract: There is disclosed a structure for rapidly and efficiently igniting charcoal briquettes of the type employed with home barbeque grills.A housing generally comprises a longitudinal cylindrical form fabricated from a plurality of non-combustible rings which are secured to a frame to form an enclosure for accomodating a desired amount of fuel. The frame includes a central support ring located near the top end of the housing and a bar located a given distance from the bottom of the housing. The bar has a projecting central portion.A sheet of combustible material is rolled to form a tubular member and is inserted in and encircled by the top support ring of the frame with the projection on the bottom bar surrounded by the tube at the other end. The combustible tube forms a flue and is surrounded by charcoal which is emplaced within the housing. The tubular flue is then lit.The housing in combination with the flue causes a rapid circulation of heated air.

  • Patent number: 4026265
Abstract: Operative starting ignition of charcoal briquettes is achieved in a relatively short period of time by a charcoal burner constructed to provide a frusto-conical flue with diametrically opposed intake openings properly proportioned to the cross-section of the upper exhaust opening, and also by properly distributing apertures of different sizes in a grate that transversely intersects and divides the flue into upper and lower chambers. A novel construction for securing the grate in position is effected by formed elements on the periphery of the grate cooperating with selectively removable elements that attach exteriorly of the grate to extend interiorly thereof, the grate being manually selectively positionable in the flue through the open bottom thereof. A simple extension selectively attachable to the upper end of the flue provides a combination support and grate for receiving thereon items to be heated.

  • Patent number: 4023553
Abstract: A charcoal lighter comprises a tubular housing with draft openings in the lower portion and a grate loosely positioned within. Hanger rods pivotably support the grate removably from the upper edge of the housing in a raised, horizontal position for holding charcoal to be lit, and one of the rods is releasable from the housing edge to pivot the grate to a lowered, declining position for depositing the lit charcoal onto a grill base. A perforate plate is installable on the upper edge of the tubular housing, allowing its use as a miniature grill, and when so installed it locks the releasable hanger rod to the housing edge, to prevent inadvertent release of the grate to the lowered position.
