  • Patent number: 5566606
Abstract: A barbecue grill has a bottom casting formed with a flange portion along its periphery. The flange portion extends up at an angle between approximately thirty and forty-five degrees from a cooking grate so that grease produced while cooking may be directed into the bottom casting, through an aperture in the bottom casting, and into a grease collection cup. The grease collection cup is mounted to the bottom casting in a manner which permits the tilting of the cup relative to the bottom casting. The periphery of the bottom casting is formed with an upstanding tongue which is received within a groove formed in a hood of the barbecue grill. The groove defines an inner leg for directing grease into the grill and an outer leg for directing water away from the inside of the grill.

  • Patent number: 5551332
Abstract: For use in a gas barbecue, a pair of smoke generating plates (18L and 18R) are mounted in an anticline arrangement between the gas burner (12) and the cooking grid. Drippings from the food will be vaporized into smoke upon falling onto the hot plates, thereby generating smoke which envelops and penetrates the food on the grill, imparting to it a desirable smoky flavor. The plates are mounted upon a bent wire stand (20) which rests upon the floor of the barbecue and extends around and over the burner. The stand has a center peak (20C) over the burner and shoulders at the sides so as to support the plates in the anticline arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5528984
Abstract: A smoker insert for a gas barbecue comprises a drip pan designed to be supported by the lower grate of a gas barbecue, and a vertical baffle extending from the drip pan upwards to subdivide the cooking compartment. The drip pan is sized to fit on about 1/2 of the lower grate area so that the baffle subdivides the cooking compartment about in half. The baffle occupies a very substantial portion of the cross-section of the cooking compartment so that the side and top edges of the baffle are close to the inner surfaces of the lower shell and the closed barbecue lid. By this arrangement, a small clearance is provided around the drip pan and the baffle, between the insert and the inner surfaces of the lower shell and closed lid. A flame suppressor is provided to control flames and flame-ups.

  • Patent number: 5529798
Abstract: This invention is a barbecue type grill that can be used either indoors or outdoors. By disposing a convertible drip pan that can be opened and closed between the food supporting rack and the cooking heat source, rapid preheating can be accomplished as well as searing of desired food products, followed by closing of the drip pan to prevent unwanted flare-ups caused by juices dripping from the food being cooked. This closing of the drip pan allows the food to cook slower than over direct heat which allows the food to retain more juices when done. This invention overcomes the slow preheating and slow initial cooking inherent in the prior art using a solid impervious drip pan. Also, since different types of heat sources can be used in conjunction with the present invention, the problem of the bottom of the housing rusting out in the area adjacent the round burner below the heat deflecting plate is effectively eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5437222
Abstract: A grill and oven combination for cooking food comprising a container having a hollow interior bounded by a bottom portion and walls extended upwards therefrom to define an opening with one of the walls having a hole disposed thereon near the bottom portion; a lid pivotally connected to the container near the opening thereof and positionable in an opened orientation for allowing access to the interior of the container and a closed orientation for preventing access to the interior of the container; a heat-conductive liner disposed within the interior of the container along its inner periphery with a hole disposed thereon axially aligned with the hole on the wall of the container to define an access hole adapted for allowing combustible materials for cooking food to be added and combusted materials from cooking food to be removed; and a grill disposed within the liner adapted for holding food thereon for cooking.

  • Patent number: 5431093
Abstract: A barbecue device includes an oven container having a top, bottom, opposite sides, opposite ends, and a centrally disposed cooking zone wherein foods are suspended. One or more bins for holding combustible materials are mounted on sides and yet laterally removed from underneath the cooking zone so as to prevent liquids from dripping off of the suspended foods and falling upon the combustible materials. The bins are easily accessible when rigidly and obliquely mounted to extend inside the oven container through an aperture in the side. The portions of the bins facing inward are permeable to smoke and heat while the outwardly facing portions are not. The oblique angle of the bins allow the combustible materials therein to provide an even source of heat to the food, particularly when the food is suspending in rotating rotisserie baskets. A hinged lid and handle facilitate the loading and unloading of the bins.

  • Patent number: 5429110
Abstract: A pellet stove or grill includes a housing (10) divided by a thermal barrier (43), which is defined by a spaced pair of partitions (20, 21), into a hot compartment (23) and a cold compartment (47). The hot compartment includes a ventilated firepot (44) suspended within an air channel (40) that communicates with the cold compartment through the thermal barrier. The cold compartment is subdivided by a funnel (22) into a fuel pellet storage compartment (24) thereabove and an electrical compartment (25) therebelow. The electrical compartment includes a motorized, fuel conveyer (37) for feeding fuel pellets (31 ) from the storage compartment, down a chute (38) that extends through the thermal barrier, and into the firepot in the hot compartment for combustion. The chute includes a portion that is positioned within and communicates with the thermal barrier. An air blower (34) drives fresh air into the electrical compartment and into the thermal barrier through an aperture (50) in one of the partitions.

  • Patent number: 5425352
Abstract: A portable and nestable grill having two generally conical shaped sections forming inverted conical housings removably joined together at the smaller ends forming a midsection or waist of reduced diameter. The upper conical shaped housing defines an upper grilling section for supporting a cooking grate near the upper end and a means for supporting charcoal or other solid fuel at the lower end of the upper housing forming the waist section. The lower conical shaped housing defines a charcoal starter/ash catcher base section. A plurality of apertures are sized, shaped, and positioned to provide sufficient draft to create a venturi effect at the position of the fuel support means to provide fast pre-ignition of the solid charcoal fuel and superior convective heat transfer for cooking. The upper housing may be detached from the lower housing and the lower housing inverted and nested within the larger upper housing for transporting and storage.

  • Patent number: 5417151
Abstract: A bowl 10 and lid 11 of a barbecue are pressed from sheets of steel using press tools (not shown). Surplus steel, which occurs at the corners of the bowl 10 and lid 11 during pressing, is accommodated in elongate channels 14 which project into the bowl 10 and lid 11 and which appear as recesses on the outside of the bowl 10 and lid 11. The channel 14 extends substantially all the way around the undersurface of the bowl 10 but is not of uniform depth all the way around. Instead the depth of the channel 14 is increased at certain points to form shoulders which in use support first and second grill portions which should themselves respectively support portions of food to be cooked and simulated solid fuel.
