The curling member is capable of transitioning between an extended configuration and a curled configuration. The channel has a curved cross-section corresponding to the curling member's curved cross-section, which creates a trough, whereby hair can be positioned in the trough and held therein by wrapping the flap over the trough and around the channel. Transitioning the curling member from an extended configuration to a curled configuration holds the flap and the hair in a curved configuration, which imparts a curl to the hair when the hair is held in the curled configuration for some time.

Typically,the apparatus includes opposing first and second electrodes respectively provided on first and second arms that are movable towards and away from one another. Drive circuitry supplies electrical energy to the first and second electrodes, to cause an alternating electric field to be produced in the vicinity of the electrodes in use, and thereby cause dielectric heating of hair placed between the electrodes in use. Sensing circuitry senses a change in coupling of energy from the alternating electric field to the hair during heating of the hair. Control circuitry controls the drive circuitry to vary the electrical energy supplied to the first and second electrodes in dependence upon the sensed change in coupling. A related method manipulates the shape of hair using dielectric heating.

Abstract: Disclosed is a hair iron having a modified heating plate. A surface of the heating plate making contact with hair is inclined by a predetermined angle relative to a horizontal plane of a handle, and a far-infrared ray device is installed on the surface of the heating plate. The hair iron includes an upper body and a lower body coupled with the upper body by a hinge section. Each of the upper and lower bodies includes a handle formed at one end thereof with the hinge section, a supporter extending from the handle, and a heating plate attached to the supporter and provided with a far-infrared ray device that emits far-infrared rays. A horizontal plane of the heating plate is inclined relative to a horizontal plane of the handle by a predetermined angle.
