Abstract: An electronic fuel dispensing nozzle assembly adapted to reduce the undesirable effects of a pure mechanical system by providing an electromechanical fuel dispensing trigger assembly. An electromechanical fuel dispensing trigger assembly includes a valve assembly selectively displaceable between an open and a closed position and a trigger assembly selectively displaceable between a first position and a second position. Electronic elements are provided to selectively enable the trigger assembly to selectively open the valve when displaced from the first position to the second position. Furthermore, the electronic elements can also inhibit the trigger assembly, such that motion of the trigger assembly from the first position to the second position does not cause the valve assembly to be displaced from the closed position to the open position.

  • Patent number: 5476125
Abstract: A fuel nozzle assembly for dispensing fuel from a source to a container includes a body defining a fuel flow path and a vapor recovery path. The nozzle includes a venturi valve in the fuel flow path which defines a venturi port and a diaphragm valve positioned in the vapor recover path, The diaphragm valve has a control section having a control port which is in fluid communication with the venturi. The diaphragm valve is normally spring biased closed. When gas flows through the venturi and over the venturi port, it creates a vacuum in the diaphragm control section sufficiently strong to open the diaphragm valve so that recovered vapors may be returned to a source of fuel, or other collection area, such as an underground storage fuel tank.

  • Patent number: 5474115
Abstract: A fuel dispensing nozzle has a vent tube extending through a spout of the nozzle and automatic shut off device in communication with, and responsive to, the passage of air through the vent tube. The vent tube terminates in an air port at the tip of the spout. A tip, forming a valve, is placed at the end of the vent tube. The valve has a magnetic responsive valve member and a seat formed at the junction of tip and the vent tube. The vacuum created by the nozzle seats the magnetic valve member against the seat to close the tube to activate the automatic shut off device. A vehicle which can accept the fuel being dispensed is equipped with a magnet in the neck of the fill pipe of the tank which will attract the magnetic valve member to hold the vent tube open, so that the automatic shut off device will not be activated by a closed valve member and fuel can be dispensed to the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5224525
Abstract: A hose nozzle for filling fluid into a tank and for shutting off automatically when the tank is filled is provided. The hose nozzle comprises a housing that has an inlet nozzle and an outlet pipe at opposite ends of the housing and a grip portion of an area of the inlet nozzle. A flow valve is disposed in the housing between the inlet nozzle and the outlet pipe whereby the flow valve further comprises a valve rod. A control device is provided that comprises a pressure channel and a plunger-type control element, for closing the flow valve depending on a pressure present in the pressure channel, against a direction of fluid flow, whereby the control device is disposed in the housing between the inlet nozzle and the flow valve and whereby the pressure channel is connected to a port of the outlet pipe. A manual lever, disposed within the grip portion and connected with one end thereof to the control device, actuates the flow valve and controls a fluid flow from the inlet nozzle to the outlet pipe.

  • Patent number: 5213142
Abstract: A Stage II Vapor Recovery System is provided with a special array of storage tanks, dispensers, fuel pumps, vapor assist pumps, and flow control nozzles, to capture hydrocarbon emissions, prevent condensate from blocking vapor return lines, and dispense gasoline or other liquid fuel and condensate to customer tanks. Specifically, fuel lines connect storage tank to flow control nozzles via dispensers and are assisted by fuel pumps to pump gasoline into customers' tanks. The nozzles have vapor passageways to capture hydrocarbon vapors emitted during fueling. The captured vapors are pumped by vapor assist pumps from the vapor passageways through vapor return lines into the storage tanks. The nozzles are equipped with condensate liquid pickup tubes to remove condensed vapors blocking the vapor return lines. The condensate liquid tubes communicate with condensate venturi ports adjacent venturi sleeves in the nozzles.

  • Patent number: 5197523
Abstract: A fuel dispensing nozzle (10) has a body (12) including a fuel passage for fuel to flow from a source thereof through the body. A spout (18) is attached to the body in fluid communication therewith for fuel to flow into the spout from the passage. The distal end of the spout forms a mouth (19) insertable into the tank. A vapor return path is provided for capturing fuel vapors and returning them to the source, so to substantially reduce or eliminate emissions. A vacuum is produced in a variable venturi portion (42) of the nozzle and is applied to the return path to extract any fuel collecting therein. This vacuum is in addition to another vacuum produced at the venturi and used to assist in automatically shutting-off fuel flow when the tank is full. This device is a power generating source that is not limited to only fuel extraction and nozzle shut off.

  • Patent number: 5174346
Abstract: An improved fuel dispensing nozzle of significantly reduced size and weight has a single diaphragm that provides the vapor regulating function as well as providing the excess pressure and excess vacuum shut-off functions. Improved shut-off function is obtained by ensuring that chamber pressure is the same as that at the spout tip disposed in the vehicle fuel tank fill pipe. The improved fuel dispensing nozzle design also reduces the amount of accidental fuel spillage which may occur when refueling is concluded.

Abstract: A fuel dispensing nozzle includes a nozzle body and a projecting spout and surrounding bellows which define a fuel supply passage and a vapor return passage connected to corresponding concentric passages within flexible coaxial hoses. The body supports a manually actuated control valve within the fuel passage, and a pressure responsive check valve is also located within the fuel passage adjacent the spout. The check valve includes a valve member normally biased against a tapered valve seat, and a first venturi suction passage extends from the valve seat to control a pressure responsive diaphragm mechanism for automatically closing the manually actuated valve when fuel blocks a suction vent line within the of the spout. A second venturi suction passage extends from the valve seat through the nozzle body and connects with a fuel evacuation passage within a flexible tube which extends downwardly into the vapor passage within the coaxial hoses.
