  • Patent number: 5201353
Abstract: A debarker head for use in a rotary tree debarking machine has a drive shaft with a polygonal cross sectional shape and a plurality of substantially similar cutting elements with mounting apertures corresponding to the drive shaft shape and sized for slip fit engagement of the cutting elements on the drive shaft so that the cutting elements may be mounted to the drive shaft at a number of rotational positions relative to the drive shaft. Further, the cutting elements have a plurality of arms with cutting knives. The number of arms of at least some of the cutting elements is not an integer multiple of the number of sides of the mounting aperture so that a variety of cutting knife arrangements for debarking various species of logs using the same head may be obtained by adjusting the rotational position of the cutting elements relative to the drive shaft. This design of debarker head can be repaired in the field.

  • Patent number: 5168907
Abstract: A Rosser type debarker head has a plurality of rounded, indexable cutting teeth spaced in patterns of repeated rows running axially the length of the cylindrical surface, each tooth being spaced along the cylindrical surface so that the total cutting pattern produced by a single rotation of the head creates a uniform round toothed scalloped effect. Each tooth is shadowed by adjacent offset teeth so that only the portion of the round tooth outside of a cord representing essentially one-sixth of the circumference of the tooth is exposed to direct cutting impact. The remainder of the round tooth is shadowed by adjacent cutter teeth. As a result, the debarker head produces a uniform scalloped cut, producing a shallow, smooth cut upon the log with limited splintering, while reducing the impact on the teeth so that tooth life is significantly extended.

  • Patent number: 5139064
Abstract: A saw tooth, of which a number are removably mounted on a tree-felling saw head, includes a body portion having a lead cutter and a trailing primary cutter separated by a throat. The combined lead cutters function to cut a narrow side wall kerf on each side of a larger principal kerf together with corresponding inside corners of the larger kerf. The remainder of the larger kerf is then cut out by the following primary cutters, forming a square cut end. As the cut progresses, the combined primary cutters separate the longitudinal fibers of the tree at the square cut end without double cutting the fibers, thereby improving cutting efficiency and reducing energy requirements in felling a tree.

  • Patent number: 5135035
Abstract: An improved cutting bit and associated holding block assembly for use on rotary wheel, chain or rotor cutters of the type having a plurality of cutting bits projecting outwards from the periphery of the wheel, chain or rotor and used to cut tree stumps or other hard or refractory materials includes individual holding blocks which each rotatably support within a bore therewithin a separate cylindrical cutting bit. The bore is canted inwards with respect to a radius of the wheel, chain or rotor, thus causing the outermost portion of a rotatable bit held in the bore to contact a surface to be worked at a negative top rake angle as the bit is rotated into contact with the work surface. The negative top rake angle advantageously provides clearance for chips severed by the bit.

  • Patent number: 5127774
Abstract: A specialized, solid, cylindrical tool bit for cleaning uneven surface material from the bottom or floor of a dado channel previously cut in a workpiece. The bit operates at rotation speeds in excess of 10,000 revolutions per minute and has a cutting member having a cutting edge along only the bottom of the cutting member. The cutting edge has four cutting teeth spaced equidistant from each other and circumferentially close to an axis of rotation of the bit. The teeth and body member cooperate to dissipate the heat generated by the high speed rotation of the bit during the cleaning operation of the bit. The entire outer circumferential surface of the cutting member presents no cutting edge for engagement with the side walls of the channel cut in the workpiece. This tool bit performs the task of creating a perfectly flat plane on the bottom surface or floor of the dado channel.

  • Patent number: 5046671
Abstract: A tooth for use in a comminuter roll comprises a roll of spring steel having a first end formed into a point or other abrading shape. The tooth is compressed upon insertion into a mounting hole in the roll and the inherent spring of the steel tends to force the tooth back to its original size, thereby creating forces on the interior of the mounting hole to form an interference fit that holds the tooth in place in the mounting hole. In a preferred embodiment, the tooth is formed of a roll of spring steel having a G-shaped cross section. This shape provides an opening through the length of the tooth and also leaves a solid place in the center of the tooth to aid in tooth removal. A rod can be slipped through the lengthwise opening of the first tooth so that its end abuts the solid center portion of the second tooth that is colinearly mounted in the other end of the hole that the first tooth is mounted in. Tapping the rod will force the second tooth out of its hole without disturbing the first tooth.

The chain includes knife tips with angularly disposed serrations which engage the surface of the log from which veneer is being cut. As the log is rotated about its longitudinal axis, the friction between the log and knife tip serrations imparts longitudinal movement of the chain with respect to the log. The chain thereby moves around the chain bar so as to cut a layer of veneer from the log. No separate power source is required for rotating the chain.

  • Patent number: 4872495
Abstract: A tool for rotation ring type barking machines comprises a swinging arm which is connected at one end via a screw connection with a holder on a shaft rotatably mounted in the rotor of the machine. The holder has two elongated grooves spaced apart by an intermediate ridge and adapted to accommodate two spaced-apart beads formed on the swinging arm. The two outer lateral faces defining the grooves are sloping in cross-section and converge toward one another at an angle slightly less than a corresponding angle of convergence between the outer lateral faces defining said beads. Also the inner lateral faces of said beads and said ridge are sloping, and upon tightening of the screw connection at issue the beads are urged into the two grooves, the difference between said angles of convergence being gradually reduced toward zero until the inner bead faces come into contact with the lateral faces of the ridge, at which point the screw has been tightened with sufficient tensioning force.

  • Patent number: 4865095
Abstract: A tool for rotation ring type barking machines comprises a curved swinging arm which is adapted to carry at a first, free end a cutting edge and which is detachably connected at its opposite end by means of a screw connection with a shaft rotatably mounted in the rotor of the machine, more particularly via a holder which is preferably made in one piece with the shaft and extends at an angle relative to said shaft. The swinging arm is displaceably movable relative to the holder and fixable by means of said screw connection in different selectable positions relative thereto, in order to permit variation of the distance between the center of the pivot shaft and the center of gravity of the swinging arm.

  • Patent number: 4830073
Abstract: The head (1) of the planing tool includes a plurality of helical grooves (2) of dovetail cross-section uniformly distributed over its periphery. Wedging devices (6) with knives (5) resting thereon are insertable sideways in the grooves. Disposed in each wedging device is a securing arrangement (7), actuation of which causes the associated wedging device-and-knife assembly to be pressed against the outwardly tapering sidewalls (17, 18) of the respective groove and held fast. Each of the knives has two opposite cutting edges (19, 20), either of which can be brought into operating position by reversing the knife. A second groove (16) runs parallel to each first groove (2) for receiving a guide component of a knife-aligning device. Owing to the helical configuration of the grooves and the precisely aligned cutting edges of the reusable knives disposed in the grooves, vibration-free machining of workpieces with planing widths of up to more than two meters is possible.
