Having Isolated Holes Or Suction Cups Patents (Class 152/209.17)
  • Patent number: 6668885
Abstract: A pneumatic tire in which a block formed in a tread surface has, in a ground contacting surface thereof, a closed sipe which is formed so as to not open onto a groove. The sipe has a first opening formed in the ground-contacting surface of the block, a second opening formed at side surfaces of the block, and a hole which communicates the first opening and the second opening. In accordance with this structure, water taken-in into the sipe from the first opening at the ground-contacting surface of the block is discharged to the second opening contacting at the side surface facing to the groove. As a result, water drainability of the sipe is improved without lowering rigidity of the block. Thus, a ground contacting performance of the block improves. The pneumatic tire therefore has improved performance on wet roads and improved performance on snowy and icy roads without the rigidity of blocks decreasing.

  • Patent number: 6633150
Abstract: An apparatus and method for improving traction for mobile robots where traction is a concern. The mobile robot of the invention includes wheels and brushes. The wheels are mounted to the body of the robot. The brush is mounted to the body close to the wheels. When the wheels are rotating, the brush rubs against the wheel to get rid of debris on the tread of the wheel and cleans the wheel so that traction for the robot can be improved. An alternative way to improve traction by reducing slippage utilizes suction cups or wiper elements mounted on the wheel.

Abstract: A tread for a tire having a preferred direction of travel has a plurality of tread pattern blocks, the upper faces of which are intended to come into contact with the roadway during travel of the tire. The tread pattern blocks are provided with a plurality of wells of section S and of depth H, each block being divided into a front section and a rear section by a median plane Pv perpendicular to the upper contact face of the block and to the longitudinal direction of the tread and passing through the center of mass G of the contact face of the block when new. The front section has a leading edge and the rear section has a trailing edge. This tread is characterized in that, when new and for each tread pattern block which is provided with wells, the volume of all the wells located in the front section of the block is greater than the volume of all the wells located in the rear section of the block.

  • Patent number: 6503354
Abstract: A device and technique for processing tires on site includes penetrating the tire with an array of spikes to provide a multiplicity of pinholes dispersed about the tread surface. The pinholes, thereby eliminating the risk of blisters. The size and quantity of the pinholes is calibrated to provide a path for the escape of gas entrapped in the tire material during the manufacturing process, without significantly affecting the performance of strength of the tire. The pattern of pinholes provides a ready path for gas to escape as the tire is heated during use, without the risk of blistering that plagues the typical racing tire. In one embodiment of the invention, the tire is rotatably supported to contact a tire preparation element that includes a plurality of spikes configured to smoothly penetrate the tire rubber. In one feature, the spikes can be heated to facilitate penetration of the tire material, particularly high durometer materials.

  • Patent number: 6484773
Abstract: A tread pattern for a tire, the tread pattern being formed by elements in relief defined by grooves, some of these elements in relief being provided with at least one blind incision, that is to say, one which does not open into the grooves. These elements in relief include at least one cutout which opens into at least one groove defining these elements, and such that, on the running surface, each blind incision crosses at least one open-ended cutout of the same element, whatever the level of wear of the tire. Each of these open-ended incisions has a depth substantially equal to the depth of the blind incisions which it crosses and is filled with a filler material, the filler material having the characteristic of being gradually eliminated under the action of frictional contact with the ground during travel to form a channel of low depth which enables the air trapped in the blind incisions to escape.

Abstract: A crack suppressing rubber, which has elongation-at-break which is superior to elongation-at-break of a cap rubber, is disposed so as to reinforce a vicinity of a groove bottom of a circumferential direction narrow groove provided in the vicinity of a shoulder of a tire tread. Due to this, generation of cracks from the vicinity of the groove bottom, at a time when land portions at an outer side of the circumferential direction narrow groove are greatly deformed due to a large lateral force or due to recesses and projections of a road surface or the like, and growth of generated cracks are suppressed. As a result, breaking of land portions at outermost sides in a widthwise direction of a tire, and separation of the tread can be effectively suppressed.
