Patent number: 8720504Abstract: A non-pneumatic tire includes a plurality of springs. Each spring includes a first end portion, a second end portion, and an arching middle portion. Each spring is interwoven with at least one other spring thereby forming a toroidal structure extending about an entire circumference of the non-pneumatic tire. The toroidal structure is at least partially coated with an elastomer. One end portion of at least one spring is wrapped around a first bead structure adjacent a rim.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2011Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: James Alfred Benzing, II, Wesley Glen Sigler

Patent number: 6892779Abstract: The invention provides an assembly of a pneumatic tire and a rim. The tire has at least one carcass ply 2 and a belt layer 8. The ply 2 is composed of ply cords and has end portions. The belt layer 8 is composed of belt cords provided outside of the ply 2. Each belt cord extends in a direction intersecting the ply cord. Each of the end portions is held in the rim 12. The width of the tire is maximum in a circumferential cross section “T” with a cylindrical shape with respect to the center axis “D” of the tire. The cross section “T” extends through the rim 10. When the tire is rolled under a load and a stress is applied on the tire as an arrow “X”, a neighboring portion 2d near the end portions 2a, 2b is considerably bending-deformed as arrows “Y” to absorb the stress. The roundness of the belt layer 8 is thus preserved to reduce the rolling resistance of the tire considerably.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2001Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Assignee: Bridgestone CorporationInventors: Ken Masaoka, Hiroki Sawada, Mitsuo Hashimoto, Yuichiro Ogawa

Patent number: 4957150Abstract: A linear tire and wheel assembly comprising a hub having spaced flanges on which are mounted an inner tube surrounded by a jacket over which a tire casing is mounted so that inflation of the inner tube results in the formation of a tire mounted on said hub. The jacket is made of flexible material which takes a predetermined shape when enlarged by the inflation of the inner tube. Air under pressure is supplied through one of the flanges.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1989Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Inventors: Louis A. Dionisio, Philip Dionisio

Patent number: 4630662Abstract: A vehicle wheel, especially for a truck. The wheel has a rigid rim on which can be mounted a pneumatic tire of rubber or rubber-like material. The carcass of the tire is anchored in the tire beads by being looped around pull-resistant bead cores. The tire beads are disposed on the radially inner periphery of the rim ring. In order to make it particularly easy to mount the tire, the rim seating surfaces for each tire bead extend essentially horizontally in the transverse direction, and extend to the edge of the rim ring. A clamping ring is disposed radially inwardly of the tire bead, with that side of the clamping ring which rests against the bead extending at an angle to the axis of rotation of the wheel. The bead core has a cross-sectional shape which includes sides which extend essentially parallel to the clamping ring and parallel to the rim seating surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1985Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: Continental Gummi-Werke AktiengesellschaftInventor: Volker Howind

Patent number: 4440209Abstract: A split tire arrangement (10) for use with a closed torus tire (14), includes a first and second rim halves (11,12) each respectively having a first tapered diameter (23) and a second smaller tapered diameter (24) located on an inner side (21) of the split halves adjacent the first tapered diameter. A split band (13) is located on the second tapered diameter (24) and has a radially outwardly extending center portion (38) to locate the closed torus tire (14) relative to the split band (13) with the edges (34,36) of the split band terminating under the roll hoops (16,17) of the closed torus tire (14). This provides an arrangement for mounting the closed torus tire (14) to the split rim arrangement (10) without requiring the high forces of rubber sliding on metal.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1982Date of Patent: April 3, 1984Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Robert J. Patent number: 4271552Abstract: A torpedo recovery system including an expandable sleeve surrounding a portion of the torpedo. Upon activation of the recovery system gas is introduced into the sleeve, causing it to expand. The sleeve is clamped firmly at two distinct longitudinal positions along the torpedo and is releasably clamped at a third longitudinal position. When the differential pressure between gas inside of the sleeve and water outside the sleeve reaches a predetermined threshold level, the releasable clamp releases the sleeve allowing it to gradually expand to form a doughnut-shaped floatation collar. The expanding sleeve provides gradually increasing drag to slow the torpedo and then positive buoyancy for lifting it to the water's surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1979Date of Patent: June 9, 1981Assignee: Presearch IncorporatedInventor: Charles S. Patent number: 4206797Abstract: In an axially elongated, flexible-walled fluid-distensible ground contacting tire which is mounted on a wheel axle by clamping the ends of the tire between a wheel flange and a keeper ring, a guard which projects outwardly from the ends of the tire and encircles the keeper ring for fending off obstructions which tend to jam between the keeper ring and the ends of the tire. The guard is integral with the tire on each end of the tire adjacent to and surrounding the keeper ring and projects outwardly from each tire a distance at least as great as the thickness of the keeper ring and includes a deflecting surface extending from the tire ends outwardly and towards the tire axis for deflecting obstructions.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1976Date of Patent: June 10, 1980Assignee: Rolligon CorporationInventor: John G. Holland, Sr.

Patent number: 4142569Abstract: Two-piece rim for mounting tires, single or dual, on a wheel. The removable bead ring has an axial projection intended for engagement by restraining means mounted on the wheel in the event a tire on said rim is unintentionally deflated. Various forms of restraining means are provided.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1977Date of Patent: March 6, 1979Assignee: The Dayton Steel Foundry Company (Dayton-Walther Corporation)Inventors: William D.
