  • Patent number: 5509455
Abstract: An aircraft tire 10 has at least two circumferentially extending reinforcement inserts. At least one pair of reinforcement inserts 90 is located on each side of the tire. Each insert 90 preferably has two cord reinforced members 91, 92 having bias angled cords. The cords are equal but opposite in orientation relative to the cords of the adjacent member. The pairs of reinforced members 91, 92 extend from the bead portions 18, 20 and terminate in a radially upper portion of the sidewalls 14A, 16A. In the preferred embodiment, each bead portion 18, 20 includes three substantially inextensible bead cores 50, 52 and 54. Each pair of members 91, 92 is interposed between a pair of carcass plies 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43 on the ply side of the tire 10. This structure can increase tire durability while at the same time achieve a significant weight reduction.

  • Patent number: 5427166
Abstract: The weight, space and convenience advantages of a run-flat tire can be substantial. This is especially true for the urban-economy car or family type vehicles which have limited space available for a spare tire and inadequate space for the removed flat tire. These vehicles also have higher comfort requirements that must be addressed. The mini-spare solution to the flat tire problem has very limited performance capabilities. Other solutions include major modifications in the rim and/or the tire, which are not cost effective or compatible with a conversion to standard tires on the same rims. The run-flat tire of this invention includes thickened sidewall portions, a belt package with a cap ply, lower sidewall rubber support portions, a specially designed bead seat area with a rim seat ply and three carcass layers. The classical problems of inflated vs. deflated performance tradeoffs in ride comfort, handling, radial stiffness and endurance of the tire are substantially improved.

  • Patent number: 4726408
Abstract: The invention relates to a pneumatic radial carcass type tire for heavy duty use having an improved reinforcing structure for the bead region. In a tire comprising a four ply radial carcass (1), the two bead regions are each reinforced by a bead core (2) and an axially inner (6) and an axially outer (7) textile reinforcing layer and a rubber apex strip (8). As compared to the prior art, the relatively low rubber apex strip (8) and the resulting low separation point between the first (3) and second (4) set of carcass plies reduces the sheer stresses between these carcass plies while the specific arrangement of the axially inner (6) and axially outer (7) reinforcing layers retains the required stiffness in the bead region (5). A particular durable bead region (5) is thus obtained.
