The inner sheet, permeable to liquids, is coated with adhesive and is supplied, over the absorbent pad, onto the impervious sheet so as to adhere to the latter and to the strips all around the absorbent pad. The application particularly relates to diapers comprising an absorbent pad containing superabsorbent material in granular form.

    Abstract: A fabric web having a high modulus of elasticity is used as a spring element in an upholstered article such as a seat or a bed. The fabric web is joined to a metal rod serving as a frame member of the upholstered article by an end portion of the fabric web, which is folded on itself over the metal rod to provided folded and unfolded layers that are united together by means of a heat-fusible resin film. The heat-fusible resin film is held against the inner surface of the folded end portion of the fabric web and fused by high-frequency welding. The folded end portion of the fabric web is protected by the intermediary film against damage which would otherwise be caused by abrasive contact with a rust layer on the metal rod. The film sandwiched between the folded and unfolded layers has opposite ends folded and fused over the unfolded layer of the fabric web for reinforcing marginal edges of the fabric web.

The composition may further contain linear low-density polyethylene to improve film-forming properties. By subjecting the hot-pressed composite sheet to a plurality of heating-cooling steps, it is provided with high heat resistance. In addition, by foaming the film and hot-pressing it to a stretchable woven or nonwoven fabric and then stretching, the composite sheet is further provided with high stretchability.

Numerous materials of this type are available. Included among them are block copolymers which include a rubbery material as one component, polyurethanes, and irradiated polyethylene. Alternatively, a conventional polyolefin backing sheet may be used with strips of the heat shrinkable elastomeric material bonded in appropriate marginal locations in the waist or leg zones. These marginal zones are then heated to an appropriate temperature and any tension on the sheet relaxed to allow shrinkage and elasticization to take place.

An anvil acts against the head at the time of application of the tensioned elastic to the moving web. The web is passed between the head and the anvil along a path describing a chord or tangent of the circle of rotation of the radial arms.

    Abstract: Toe closing socks first involves stretching them flat on a carrier, then one of the resulting confronting layers of fabric is effectively held substantially immobile by a fabric-holding device and the other layer is displaced longitudinally relative thereto by a movable displacing means brought into engagement therewith. Maintaining the layers mutually displaced, for example by clamping them to one another, they are conveyed past a sewing machine and seamed. By seaming the layers together while they are mutually displaced, the seam will adopt an overfoot or underfoot position in the finished sock due to readjustment of the fabric and the return of the layers to their normal relaxed relative dispositions.

    Abstract: A bulked web composite comprises a differentially tensioned reticulated web of elastic material bonded to at least one gatherable web whereby, upon release of the tensioning forces, the gatherable web or webs are gathered by the reticulated web with different degrees of bulking in different areas due to the different tension levels of the reticulated web. Also disclosed is a method of making a bulked web composite by the steps of: forming a reticulated web of elastic material and elongating at least portions of the web by differentially tensioning it, and bonding the differentially tensioned web to at least one gatherable web to form a composite. The composite is then relaxed whereby portions of the gatherable web are gathered by the contracted reticulated web with different degrees of bulking in different areas. Bulked web composites of such type may be employed to form disposable swim wear, towels, wash cloths, and the like.

    Abstract: A method for making a fiberglass truss has features that eliminate the need for a mold. The method includes first a step of tensioning a pair of spaced-apart filaments strips to define the chords for the truss. The chords are interconnected at several points along their lengths with a strip of filaments for defining triangular bracing or a web for the truss. Tension is applied to the strips to secure the chords and web in place. Then the chords and web are coated with resin. After hardening, the tension is removed. In one method, the chords are tensioned between two end walls of a container. The intersecting points of the web and chords are restrained against lateral movement by means of retaining devices mounted to two oppositely facing side walls. Triangular spacer elements define passageways for the chords and web. The container is filled with resin after the chords and web have been placed and tensioned. After impregnation, the container is drained. The completed truss may be removed after hardening.
