Abstract: Exposed pipe joints formed of adjacent lengths of corrosion protective coated pipe sections have a protective sheet of synthetic resin material wound about the joint between the adjacent segments of coated pipe. The synthetic resin sheet is deployed from a reel on a coating applicator machine. The pipe joint and adjacent coated pipe sections are initially heated. The sheet of synthetic resin is then wrapped in successive layers over the joint. Pressure is also applied to the sheet material as it is being wrapped. The sheet layers are heated after being applied onto the joint. Wrapping and heating continues during deployment of the sheet material from the reel, and the resin sheet is cylindrically wound over the joint in successive layers until the desired coating thickness is obtained. The successive layers of wrapped sheet material fuse to form an integral protective coating over the pipe joint and the adjacent coated pipe sections.

Abstract: A permeate carrier to be described in detail below has side edges, alternatively called borders, that are thinner than a central part of the permeate carrier. Adhesive is applied to the side edges to form a seal when a membrane leaf is formed around the permeate carrier. After the membrane leaf is wound around a central tube, the side edges extend in a spiral around the central tube. The transition between the side edges and the central part of the permeate carrier helps prevent adhesive from flowing into the central part of the permeate carrier. The reduced thickness of the side edges also reduces an increase in diameter at the ends of an element that might otherwise be caused by the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 8414724
Abstract: A structural member such as a strut includes a composite material tube having metal end fittings that are attached to the tube by co-bonded, double shear joints. The double shear bond joint construction reduces the residual stress on the bonds that result from mismatch of the coefficients of thermal expansion of the composite tube and the metal end fittings. The ends of the fittings that are bonded to the tube may include a stepped profile that functions to limit the peak stresses in the bonds.

  • Patent number: 8398801
Abstract: A composite mandrel includes a filament-wound composite tube, and composite material molded over the filament-wound composite tube. For example, the composite material includes chopped fibers and a matrix of thermoset resin. The chopped fibers are arranged in layers upon the filament-wound composite tube, and the chopped fibers in each of the layers are randomly oriented along first and second orthogonal directions in each of the layers. The composite material includes at least one sheet of the composite material wound over the filament-wound tube, and at least one strip of the composite material wound over the sheet of the composite material and forming a head on the composite mandrel. An internal cavity of the filament-wound composite tube may provide a lumen for the composite mandrel. The internal cavity may be threaded to receive a removable bridge plug.

Abstract: A method of winding a holding sealing material includes providing a mat-shaped holding sealing material including inorganic fibers. An exhaust gas treating body is provided having cell walls extending along a longitudinal direction of the exhaust gas treating body to define cells. The mat-shaped holding sealing material is wound around an outer peripheral portion of the exhaust gas treating body to form multiple layers including a first layer and a second layer wound around the first layer. Each of the multiple layers is shifted along the longitudinal direction in a winding order such that the first layer is placed closer to one end face of the exhaust gas treating body than the second layer. A shift between the first layer and the second layer is from about 0.15% to about 15% of a length in a width direction of the holding sealing material.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the continuous production of a flexible liquid-absorbing web material having two outer layers, at least one of which is formed by a textile material, between which are inserted at least two stretchable-elastic intermediate layers that are pre-stressed with respect to said layers and comprise filaments or bands arranged running in opposite directions to each other and obliquely with respect to the production direction. The intermediate layers shorten and gather the web material substantially transversely to the production direction thereof when the intermediate layers are relieved of stress. Powder-form or fibre-form inserts, which have absorbent properties for liquids, such as urine, blood, water or sweat, or resorbing properties, such as release of medicinal substances, cosmetic ingredients or for generating heat/cold, are introduced into the free spaces of the elastic intermediate layer.
